Trump, NATO head Stoltenberg have testy exchange at summit

President Donald Trump on Wednesday had a testy exchange with the head of NATO when he asked about energy agreements between Russia and several European countries.

Trump repeatedly pressed Jens Stoltenberg, NATO's secretary general, on why the U.S. continued to pay money to the military alliance while countries continue to purchase energy from Moscow.

“We are stronger together,” Stoltenberg insisted, but acknowledged that there can be differences among allies.

Still, Trump persisted.

“But how can you be together when you’re getting energy from the group you want protection from?” the president asked.

Trump used Germany as an example. He asked Stoltenberg to explain why Berlin was getting energy from Moscow, and asserted that Germany was "totally controlled" by and "captive to Russia" over a pipeline project.

The president appeared to be referring to the Nord Stream 2 pipeline that would double the amount of gas Russia can send directly to Germany, skirting transit countries such as Ukraine. The project is opposed by the U.S. and some European Union members.

Trump said of Germany: "We're supposed to protect you against Russia and yet you make this deal with Russia."

“Explain that,” Trump said. “It can’t be explained."

The sharp exchange occured hours before Trump arrived at NATO headquarters for additional meetings.

The U.S. role in NATO has been a focal point for Trump since before he was elected president. He tweeted Monday that the situation was “not fair, nor is it acceptable.” He said NATO benefits Europe “far more than it does the U.S.”

Trump has called upon NATO allies to meet commitments to spend 2 percent of their GDP on defense.

He tweeted en route from Washington that European countries "want us to happily defend them through NATO, and nicely pay for it. Just doesn't work!"

Brussels is the first stop of Trump's week-long European tour that will include a visit to Britain and a meeting in Finland with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Desperation met stupidity on the corner of bad luck and despair, and the democratic party was born.

Now, the president of the EU, Donald Tusk, is advocating a separate European army and a budget of only one percent of their GDP.  Even, if forces dedicated to NATO are those involved in this force, it will require a separate HQ -- more money diverted from forces for a fancy HQ.

Enough of this foolishness of Trump collusion with Russia. The only evidence was a ridiculous dossier that reads like an Onion article -- a dossier paid for by Hillary.

There may well be a Russian sleeper agent conspiring against the west and NATO, in particular -- an agent raised in east Germany (the DDR).  An agent who has let the German defense budget decline to such a degree that soldiers are training with broomsticks, instead of weapons. An agent who has placed Germany's industrial future at the mercy of Putin by giving him control of their energy.  An agent who flooded Germany and much of Europe with those from north Africa and the middle east who, now, are increasing those nations' welfare costs and, seriously, increasing the crime rate.

Yes, mutti, I'm referring to you Mutti Merkel.

  • Steele was paid $160,000 to create the Trump dossier for Fusion GPS. The Hillary Clinton presidential campaign and Democratic National Committee financed the work. So the FBI and Justice Department used opposition research from a presidential campaign to launch an investigation into that campaign's political opponent — a likely illegal use of federal government surveillance for political purposes.https://www.investors.com/poli...son-to-spy-on-trump/

"Since its launch in February of 2012, the Washington Free Beacon has retained third party firms to conduct research on many individuals and institutions of interest to us and our readers. In that capacity, during the 2016 election cycle we retained Fusion GPS to provide research on multiple candidates in the Republican presidential primary, just as we retained other firms to assist in our research into Hillary Clinton. All of the work that Fusion GPS provided to the Free Beacon was based on public sources, and none of the work product that the Free Beacon received appears in the Steele dossier. The Free Beacon had no knowledge of or connection to the Steele dossier, did not pay for the dossier, and never had contact with, knowledge of, or provided payment for any work performed by Christopher Steele. Nor did we have any knowledge of the relationship between Fusion GPS and the Democratic National Committee, Perkins Coie, and the Clinton campaign."

Well widdle lying bunny, the answer to "who's lying now" is pretty obvious. Fusion GPS had more than one customer and just one of those didn't pay for fiction that wound up as a reason for spying on innocent citizens. And I might add that the Steele 'dossier' came after Fusion GPS fulfilled it's contract with the Free Beacon

Who paid for it?

During the Republican primaries, a research firm called Fusion GPS was hired by The Washington Free Beacon, a conservative website, to unearth potentially damaging information about Mr. Trump. The Free Beacon — which was funded by a major donor supporting Mr. Trump’s rival for the party’s nomination, Senator Marco Rubio of Florida — told Fusion GPS to stop doing research on Mr. Trump in May 2016, as Mr. Trump was clinching the Republican nomination.

After Mr. Trump secured the nomination, Fusion GPS was hired on behalf of Mrs. Clinton’s campaign and the D.N.C. by their law firm, Perkins Coie, to compile research about Mr. Trump, his businesses and associates — including possible connections with Russia. It was at that point that Fusion GPS hired Mr. Steele, who has deep sourcing in Russia, to gather information.

Reportedly, there are three versions of the dossier in FBI hands. That's almost amusing.

Christopher Steele supposed used Russian cutouts to obtain the information from sources.  Steele hasn't visited Russia in over 20 to 25 years.  Bet those sources were provided by the Disinformation Bureau.  Putin's leading the Demmies around by their collective noses.

The above "clip" is from your own post. Lets get this straight. The 'Washington Free Beacon' started digging for information. AFTER Trump clinched the nomination they stopped. The company hired by 'The Washington Free Beacon' then approached the DNC and asked if they wanted the information.

While 'The Washington Free Beacon' can explain any way they wish, they started the ball rolling. The Republican narrative just doesn't bear out the facts. The 'Steele Dossier' was not used to start any investigations.

Just when one thinks democrats have hit rock bottom on stupid, they dig deeper.

There were two separate efforts on the part of Fusion GPS.

Per Wiki: "Fusion GPS, a private investigative firm, provided political opposition research against Trump in two distinct phases, with completely separate funders. Fusion GPS was first contracted by a conservative political website, The Washington Free Beacon, and Steele was not involved in that research. When Trump became the presumptive nominee on May 3, 2016, The Free Beacon stopped their backing.

Separately, in April 2016, attorney Marc Elias hired Fusion GPS to investigate Trump on behalf of Hillary Clinton's campaign and the Democratic National Committee (DNC). In June 2016, Fusion GPS subcontracted Steele to research and compile the dossier; senior Clinton campaign officials were reportedly unaware that Fusion GPS had subcontracted with Steele, and Steele was not told the Clinton campaign was the ultimate recipient of his research.[10][3] Following Trump's election as president, funding from Clinton and the DNC ceased, but Steele continued his research, and was reportedly paid directly by Glenn R. Simpson, a co-founder of Fusion GPS.[11] The completed dossier was then handed to British and American intelligence services.[12] Weeks before the 2016 election, on the basis of Steele's reputation working on Russia-related matters for nearly 20 years, the FBI reached an agreement to pay Steele to continue his work, but the agreement was later terminated as information about the dossier became public.[13] "

The dossier handover to the FBI instigated an investigation.

The letter that was filed in court said that Fusion GPS began working for the law firm, Perkins Coie, in April 2016. Written by the firm’s general counsel, Matthew J. Gehringer, the letter said that Fusion GPS had already been conducting the research “for one or more other clients during the Republican primary contest.”

Gehringer wrote that in March 2016, Fusion approached Perkins Coie to see if its clients would be interested in paying Fusion "to continue research regarding then-presidential candidate Donald Trump, research that Fusion GPS had conducted for one or more other clients during the Republican primary contest." The DNC and Clinton campaign engaged Fusion in April to "perform a variety of research services during the 2016 election cycle."

Once again, the Republican narrative doesn't fit the facts found in the court documents. Facts don't have a side, they're just facts.

And did Fusion GPS use a time machine to hire Christopher Steele in June of 2016 so that the Washington Free Beacon could get deniablity because they dropped using Fusion GPS in May? I thought this was a news/politics forum and not a sci-fi forum. Your lies keep mounting, but keep on trying, it's getting funnier!

I might also note that there's nothing nefarious about hiring opposition research, it happens all the time, but using obvious fiction to ruin lives, that's just low.

I don't understand why you two have such a hard time understanding "to continue research regarding then-presidential candidate Donald Trump, research that Fusion GPS had conducted for one or more other clients during the Republican primary contest."... to continue is to keep on doing what you were doing. No time machine needed to keep on doing what you were doing. So Fusion hired Steele later on in the research. The research was already going. Arguing semantics makes it no less true.

You could borrow the time machine Hillary used to formulate the 'Uranium scandal', if you insist on such. Whatever you need to believe to be happy being you is perfectly fine with me.

Just how did the Washington Free Beacon  initiate a future 'dossier' when they quit paying for for Fusion GPS's services a month before Christopher Steele was hired. Remember that the previous work consisted of researching public documents and sources while the Steele 'dossier' was a collection of salacious tall tales from Steele's old ex-Soviet adversaries in need of Vodka money. If you can't see the difference, then there's no helping you.

I have seen where news agencies claim that parts of the so called 'dossier' have been verified, but except for the obvious things that were already in the news cycle at the time such as the DNC hacking, I haven't seen any real revelations. I might also note that Fusion GPS has worked before for shady people such as the Russians in attempting to repeal the 2012 Magnitsky Act.

Yes, Natalia Veselnitskaya went to Fusion GPS after the Trump tower meeting.  Mueller hasn't attempted to interview her. Hell, he's interviewed every one else, except Moose and Squirrel.

One thing to me that really stinks the most to me about the 'dossier' story is the fact that the Russians bragged that they really did have dirt on HRC. If Steele was truly creating an intelligence product, he would have requested that information as well as what they had on Trump so HRC's campaign could counter those claims.

Agreed!  What mildly astounds me is that Trump goes to NATO demanding member nations increase spending, but is an ally of Putin, per Schumer.  Arming against Russia makes one an ally of Russia -- is that what goes on in a Democrat mind!  If so, it explains much of their dementia.
