I can remember when the mattress to buy was the waterbed mattress and there were even dedicated waterbed stores around to meet the demands.  Since then those stores have gone the way of Sears and today there are several choices in mattresses.  This question is to ask (hopefully to those who have tried several different types) which mattress do you like the best and find the most comfortable.

Currently, I'm using a Serta "icomfort" memory foam type mattress but I've wondered about the "Sleep Number" Mattress that uses air to adjust your comfort.  There is also Gel Foam and Memory Foam type mattresses such as Tempurpedic being the most known brands.  One of the most comfortable mattresses I have ever slept on was at a condo that we rented, while on vacation, and we even copied the name of the mattress down and I researched it only to find a supplier in the Carolinas only supplied them in bulk to Condos, Motels and the like so I was out of luck in getting one of those but I believe it was a standard spring type mattress with a plush top.  I prefer a softer mattress rather than a firm but I find you can get most any firmness in most any type of mattress.

So if you have found that "perfect mattress" what do you recommend?  And yes I do know the name brands that advertise the most cost a prohibitive amount but there are ways of achieving the same type mattress at a lower price than the advertised name brands.

We have the sleep number, paid enough money for it I have to like it. I did buy close to the entry level mattress and bought a memory foam to put on top of it. I didn't like the divider either, so I took it out. Have been sleeping on this bed for over 15 years and it is still as good as it was when we set it up.

I have noticing a lot of these mattresses you but online and they ship it to you in the mail. I would consider one of these if I were currently in the market for a mattress.

I appreciate the answers, so far, and one thing about the current online vendors is that most offer a liberal trial policy and most offer free shipping to and back, if you choose to return it to them and those return policies and refund policies on most are also very favorable to the consumer.

As far as the memory foam/latex type beds the one that gets the most positive reviews and favorable articles is the Amerisleep beds and regarding sleep number beds there is also an online alternative that is less in price and has a better waranty, sleep trial, and return policy and that is from NightAirBeds.  The name is a clickable link to their online webpage as well as the name for Amerisleep above.  I do like the adjustable feature of the air beds and whereas Sleep Number beds have two chambers the NightAirBeds can come with the same two or as many as six variable adjustable sections.

I also have had, and remember fondly, the Waterbed mattress which I've had but there they are sooooooooo heavy and you have to fill them with water, have a compatible special bed frame, liner, and heater, at least for the original waterbeds.  I'm more a sleep number 35 where my wife was a 65 when we tried them in the store but then over time that might and I'm sure would change.

Ohh yeah!  One other thing.  I was told and read on some comments where the Sleep Number beds, due to the air pump, was not recommended for people with pacemakers.  My wife has a pacemaker so I am a bit concerned about reading that on some of the online reviews.  Last thing I would want is to set her into afib or have her heart race just because I adjusted my side of the bed or her side.

I tried the stearns and foster pillow top and it went bad after 10 mths they replaced it with a regular stearns and foster mattress and we loved it.  My wife wanted to try the memory foam but we hated it too hot and encapsulating and I have had sleep number beds on the road while flying and did not like them.  So long story short in our new house in LA. Lower Alabama regular stearns and foster mattress in the house.

There has still not been anything made that beats a good quality innerspring mattress.  Using queen size as an example, I'd choose a 660 coil for good support and allow the padding to dictate how firm a feel I like. I don't care much for the memory foam or air mattresses but a the last set I bought had a layer of memory foam in the padding and I do like it.

Some shopping tips below from a guy who used to own a mattress store:

Please be mindful that the mattress and box spring are designed to work together so avoid mismatched sets. Lay on the mattress in the store, roll around, get comfortable. Make sure you like the set before you buy it.  Stores don't mind if you lay on the display mattress sets, they'd rather make sure you like the set you get than for you to call back unsatisfied. Last but not least, buying a mattress is like buying a car, don't pay the asking price.
