What most people don't know is, If you know somebody with some pull and slip alittle money under the table you can get a good job. its always been that way. I know people right now who work with a compamy right here in the shoals that got on by alittle help from their friends.

You know people who actually slipped a little money under the table to get their current job? I don't necessarily think that is right, but I don't blame anyone for using any connections they may have to get hired somewhere. That happens all the time and is no big deal at all, and I say if you get a job that way, all the more power to you.
Exactly. Very well said smart chick.

How many times have any of you heard someone say something to this effect:

"You work at Company X?"

"Yeah."

"Do you think you could put in a good word for me?"

That happens all the time and is nothing to be ashamed of if you got a job that way and I suggest that anyone looking for a job start with friends and family referrals.

First of all who said it was a big deal? Its not legal the way they did it or still do it,But what the hell, why should it matter if its legal or not,you got the job! Its who you know, not what you know!
A job is a job when you don't have food, money to pay the electric bill or to heat your home in winter but my nephew and his wife don't believe it because their parents pay the electric and the grandparents feed them.

Thinking you are going to get a $100,000 a year salary around here isn't practical.

We tell them get a job, any job, and while you have it look for a better one. There is no rule that says you have to stick with the first job you ever got. Let's be realistic, earning something is better than earning nothing.

By the way, they are expecting their first baby too. It really makes us wonder how they are going to take care of it when they can't even take care of themselves.

I agree that a lot of people I know used their friends "references" to get a job, and rightfully so, references is what Employers use to check people out by. But as far as slipping money under the table, in all my 27 years of Employment, I have NEVER seen of have KNOWN of THAT happening.

As far as my 'good' job is concerned... I did not use anyone's name that worked for my company, I didn't have politics, I was just at the right place at the right time and thankfully it turned into a career that has raised my kids, and bought my house, and all the other perks.

Using referrals or references is not illegal, paying under the table is probably not legal, but I am not sure about that, since I have never known it to happen.

I can't speak for Wise, but TVA has a very educated work force. Being heavily unionized, that means a lot of pre-employment union training. Plus, a great many of the employees (in certain groups) have BS or AS degrees. TVA spends a lot of money yearly training it's work force. When you are dealing with high voltage, untrained equals death. The days of riding in on daddy's coat tails are fading fast.

Very well said Alphonse, I believe you because I know that it is true also.

This couldn't be more true. I once spent some time speaking to troubled youth from the area and many of them wanted to drop out of high school under the assumption that they would just get a job at the plant where their father, uncle, etc. worked. I tried and tried to explain to them that things didn't really work that way anymore, but I don't think any of them believed me.

Well said both!
Don't know if it is still true, but just a few years ago this area had the highest percent of population with a degree in Chemical Engineering in the country, thanks to TVA.
My guess is that TVA probably has one of the best educated work fources in the nation.

I dont think those are great jobs, most under 100K. I know for a fact that TVA pays crap wages at least for their nuclear program.

I wouldnt doubt that at all! How are those people rewarded? Made a "professional" employee so that they can work 80 hours a week for a 40 hour salary?

I happen to know a certain someone who works as 'Trades and Labor', on a 40 hour week, he makes around $1200, but if they work overtime to the tune of 80 hours a week, he brings home nearly $3000 a week... BRINGS HOME... so I dont think it is a bad salary at all... And I also know for a fact that Nuclear pays the SAME wages per hour for the Trades force as does Fossil and Hydro. So where are you getting all this information? Whoever told ya that sure told ya wrong.

The crafts generally make more than managemement. My bone is hiring Engineers at 70 or 80K making them exempt and requiring OT. I am basing this off of an offer from TVA as well as discussions with 3 or 4 friends who fell for the bait.
Engineering department people I know of make around 120K a year, now I cannot tell how many hours they work, but I have talked to at least 3 of them about wages. Guess that depends on what location they are hired in at and which range on the pay scale they fit into, but all three of them assured me that they did get overtime pay, when they worked it.
Kindred and Alphonse, you know I couldn't agree more and also with the starter of this post. Let me inject one more thing that is said that REALLY burns me up. Every now and then, I am checking on my elderly mother at the same time Florence City Council meetings are broadcast on Comonopoly Channel 3. The assisted living facility she is in won't allow satellite, so she HAS to pay for basic cable or no TV at all. ANYWAY (you know how the dog rambles) what I have heard more than once from councilman SAM (THE SHAM) PENDLETON is the EXACT thing that was said as the headline of the topic! Not that it is his or any other councilmans JOB to bring in decent paying jobs as they were elected to do, not that Forrest Wright and SEDA are being funded for doing absolutely NOTHING, but A JOB IS A JOB and just be glad you can flip burgers. I AM SERIOUS. If you can find it, that exact statement should be in a past transcript of a Florence City Council meeting, of course THAT is another topic! There are SO MANY that I just WISH an enterprising reporter or editorial staff who wasn't too lazy or scared to report! THE DOG
