If you ask most New Testament scholars whether Jesus was likely married the mantra is a firm and dogmatic "no" -- there is not a shred of historical evidence that he was ever married or had children. The very idea is  baseless speculation at the best and cheap Holy Blood, Holy Grail/Davinci Code sensationalism at the worst.

The argument most cited is that if Jesus had been married we would have surely had traditions, both within the New Testament and the so-called "Church fathers" that such was the case. The silence therefore is deafening. Jesus lived a celibate non-sexual life. Most are quick to add -- at least the more "liberal" minded-- that they don't care a shred if he was or wasn't -- just that they don't think there is any evidence that he was.

This of course ignores the strongly dogmatic theological reasons the church clings to this day to an Ever-Virgin Jesus, parallel to a non-sexual Virgin Mary. The Holy Divine Son of God, and surely his virginally pure mother, never had sex. How could a Divine Jesus possibly leave a bit of his "DNA" behind, which w

There are two problems with this view. First the argument from silence simply does not work when it comes to women and wives of Jesus' leading followers in the New Testament. We don't know the names of any of the wives of the Apostles, nor James the brother of Jesus, even though we surely can assume, based on the Jewish culture of the time, that they were married. Wives are seldom mentioned and never named, even though marriage is the norm.

Second, and more telling, there is strong textual evidence that at least hints if not affirms that Jesus was married -- and most likely to Mary Magdalene.

First, there is the apostle Paul -- who is our earliest literary witness to any form of "Christianity," who strongly advocates and encourages celibacy or the non-sexual life -- but only mentions himself -- not Jesus -- as an example thereof. And this in a section of 1 Corinthians, where he mentions other apostles traveling with their wives (even though these "phantom" wives are never named in any of our texts), and quotes Jesus to support his views on forbidding divorce. If Jesus had been celibate Paul would surely have appealed to him as his main example.

Second, in our earliest record of Jesus' burial in Mark, the mysterious Mary Magdalene shows up out of nowhere, not only listed with Jesus' own mother and a group of Galilean women, but clearly given first place and prominence. It is Mary Magdalene -- above even Jesus' mother or sister --who takes the lead in the Jewish burial rites for the corpse of Jesus -- both washing and anointing his naked dead body. This is not the position of an outsider, or even a close "insider," in terms of disciples or followers. This is an intimate honor and a duty reserved for ones closest relatives --particularly ones wife, mother, aunt, or sister. She appears and then disappears -- though in John she is clearly the lone "first witness" to Jesus' resurrection as well. Her disappearance is as strange as her sudden appearance. But then Mary Magdalene surfaces again in some of our second and third century gospels, as a prominent female leader, intimate companion of Jesus, and bearer of "secret" revelations. How is this to be best explained?

What one must always bear in mind is that the documents of our New Testament are overwhelmingly written in the second generation of the movement, a decade or even several decades after Jerusalem's destruction by the Romans in 70 CE -- after the original followers of Jesus are either scattered or dead -- including Peter, James, Mary Jesus' mother, presumably Mary Magdalene, and even Paul.

What we get in the case of Mary Magdalene are hints of her prominence, but also a muting of her status and role. A similar phenomenon occurs with James, and the Jesus family more generally and their dominant leadership in the movement for its first 40 years. If all we had were the N.T. gospels were would hardly know James or his mother and brothers existed after Jesus' death, much less the prominent position the family had in Jerusalem Even the author of Luke-Acts fails to name the brothers of Jesus (ignoring Mark 6:3 which was his source for Luke 4), and only reluctantly mentions them in Acts 1 but not by name -- and finally implies James is in charge of the entire movement in Acts 15 and 21 -- but never makes it explicit. Something is clearly going on here in terms of muting the influence and prominence of Jesus's family in these Gospel accounts that were written after 70 CE.

We also have much more about Mary Magdalene and her prominence in later Gospels that was not included in the New Testament, see "There's Something About Mary"

Jennifer Best, my Friend,

It is so comforting to know that we now have an authority on Biblical history -- the Huffington Post!

Wow, how did we Christian believers and all the Biblical scholars miss that amazing resource which teaches us all about Biblical and Christian history? That not only deserves a "Duh!" -- it deserves a really BIG "DUH!"

And, the Ultra Liberal Far Left writer quoted by the Huffington Post must have been helping Dan Brown write the Da Vinci Code -- for we read about him:

In 2006 Tabor published The Jesus Dynasty, which interprets Jesus as an apocalyptic Messiah whose extended family founded a royal dynasty in the days before the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 AD.   (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Tabor

Jennifer, my Friend, one day all your erroneous suppositions such as this will be answered -- by Jesus Christ Himself at the Great White Throne Judgment. He will allow you to raise all these highly reliable sources which prove He does not exist -- or that He did this -- or He did that. And, you can read about His answer in Revelation 20:11-15.

But, my Friend, you can change that last scenario.   Until you breathe your last breath in this mortal body -- you CAN change, acknowledge Him as Lord and Savior, and have eternal life in Christ.

After your last mortal breath -- all bets are off.   Your next breath will witness your eternal destiny set in concrete, heaven or hell, no second chance.   Please give that some serious thought.

God bless, have a wonderful, blessed day,

Bill

Hi all,

So that my dear Friend, Chick, who most often peeks through the banisters -- will not think it is Bill Gray who is calling her spiritually blind, let me offer this article which hopefully can speak to her heart.   I pray that she, and other non-believers, will read this with an open mind -- and heed the words written.

I realize that my Friend, Chick, has me on Block -- so we should not see a nasty comment from her. This leaves the discussion open to those who will see:

Question:  "What is spiritual blindness?"

http://www.gotquestions.org/spiritual-blindness.html

Answer:  To be spiritually blind is not to see Christ, and not to see Christ is not to see God (Colossians 1:15-16; 2 Corinthians 4:6). Spiritual blindness is a grievous condition experienced by those who do not believe in God, Jesus Christ, and His Word (Romans 2:8; 2 Thessalonians 2:12). Those who reject Christ are the lost (John 6:68-69).

Being spiritually blind, they are perishing (2 Corinthians 4:3-4; Revelation 3:17).  They choose not to accept the teachings of Christ and His authority in their lives (Matthew 28:18).  They are blind to the manifestations of God as revealed throughout His Word and Jesus Christ (John 1:1; Acts 28:26-27). They are described as those who “do not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned” (1 Corinthians 2:14).

Peter spoke of such people as “scoffers [who] will come in the last days with scoffing, following their own sinful desires” (2 Peter 3:3; Proverbs 21:24; Jude 1:18).  Those who reject Christ and His Word are spiritually blind and cannot understand the truth of the Scriptures.  The truth sounds foolish to them (Isaiah 5:25; Isaiah 37:23).  The Bible describes those denying God as fools (Psalm 14:1; Matthew 7:26).  Because of their blindness and rejection of God and His Word, they are in a perilous, unsaved condition (John 12:48; Hebrews 2:2-4).

The spiritually blind are simply unable to understand His Word (Matthew 13:13; Deuteronomy 29:4). Jesus said, “If you love Me, you will keep My commandments. And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him. You know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you” (John 14:15-17).

Paul echoed this when he told the believers in Rome, “Those who are in the flesh cannot please God. You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to Him” (Romans 8:8-9).

Those outside of Christ are not of God because their lives are steeped in the things of the world with all its passions, their eyes blind to the Spirit of God.  The Apostle John said, “If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him -- but that person’s love is from the world” (1 John 2:15-16).

The cause of spiritual blindness is made quite clear in the Scriptures: “In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God” (2 Corinthians 4:4).  Paul refers to Satan as the “god of this world.”

Extraordinarily evil (John 8:44), Satan destroys the flesh (1 Corinthians 5:5), masquerades as an angel of light (2 Corinthians 11:14), and is the cause of all temptations (Luke 4:2; Hebrews 4:15; 1 Corinthians 7:5).  He revels in scheming against and trapping the unbelievers (2 Corinthians 2:11; Ephesians 6:11; 2 Timothy 2:26).  Satan’s goal is to devour the weak who fall prey to temptation, fear, loneliness, worry, depression, and persecution (1 Peter 5:8-9).

Without God and left to ourselves, we easily succumb to the devil’s schemes.  We can become so mired in the affairs of this world and its moral darkness that, in the end, God turns us over to spiritual blindness and eternal condemnation (John 12:40; Romans 1:24-32).

As believers, we have the Spirit of God reigning in our lives to ward off the debilitating effects of Satan’s power and the world’s influence (1 John 4:13).  John tells us, “Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in Him, and he in God” (1 John 4:15).

Satan wars within and without us.  His weapons are deceitful and crafty schemes to make us doubt and stumble (2 Corinthians 2:11; Ephesians 4:14).  Yet God has provided us with powerful weapons ward off his flaming arrows (Ephesians 6:10-18).  As believers we can overcome the evil one and remain in the Light and never become spiritually blind.

For, in truth, Jesus has given us His wonderful promise: “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows Me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life” (John 8:12).

God bless, have a wonderful, blessed day,

Bill

He would do well to worry about himself if there was any such thing as a god. But again, if a man named jesus had existed it would be funny to find out he was married.

There is no end of these kinds of highly speculative unproven and unprovable  theories about the life and family associations of Jesus. Any reader of that piece with a grain of sense can see that it is woven from one end to the other of the cloth of speculation.

Just one example (and that is more that the shabby piece deserves) of why Tabor's junk history deserves no credibility:

He writes,

<<<<"First, there is the apostle Paul -- who is our earliest literary witness to any form of "Christianity," who strongly advocates and encourages celibacy or the non-sexual life -- but only mentions himself -- not Jesus -- as an example thereof. >>>>

Well, perhaps if Tabor was Paul's literary editor, he could have advised him to bring Jesus into the discussion .  But that advice would be misplaced.   1 Corinthians 9: 1-7 is the passage where Paul cites other apostles and prominent Christians as  being married (verse  5) and as apparently having ceased their former vocations for full time ministry work (verse 6).   Paul's earnest argument   is solely one of his equality with the apostles and other contemporary leaders in the early church. He is   not reciting his comparability to Jesus.  It would have been purposeless for him to have done so, given the theme of his discourse. Tabor is  S T R E T C H I N G mightily to make a point that simply is not there to make.   The scholarship is simply not there!

Or to find out he was Gay.

My two dear Friends,

When the two of you stand before Him at the Great White Throne Judgment -- I am sure He will be happy to hear all of your cutesy little comments and questions.  Then He will have a FINAL word for you both.  You can read all about it in Revelation 20:11-15.  Good luck!

Bless your little hearts!
