Dear Friends and Forumites,

Please do not construe my thoughts or me as racist. It has been one week since the ending of Black History Month, and I heard (and/or) read many comments from both Blacks and Whites regarding:
The worth or reason of a "Black History" Month,and....
The condition of Race Relations in America.

Let me preface with an admission: I used to be racist. Not "put on the sheet and hang some colored boys" racist, but condescending and willing to judge the race on their bad apples. However, I have worked with and become friends with some AMERICANS who happen to have dark pigmentation, and it really opened my eyes. One such man is a man who I have coached a youth sports team with. I have come to respect him, and truly enjoy his friendship. In a direct contradiction of a stereotype, this great man has taught me some things about being a father.

Are race relations bad still? Not considering what they used to be. But they could dramatically improve with the media and the black community starting to glorify the right "Black Role Models." Here are several problems I see.

1. The "bad apple" blacks I mentioned demonize the Blacks who are upstanding citizens and fathers, and accuse them of being a "Uncle Tom", or not black enough. The fine upstanding members of the community who happen to be black need to flip the tables, and ostracize the "thugs" and make it known that the worthless thugs are the exception, not the rule.

2.The American media needs to quit glorifying the rappers who espouse no values, drugs and violence. Hair trigger temper athletes with a me first mentality need to stop being lionized as well. The media needs to start recognizing the true heroes of the black community- the hard working family men who ignore their skin tone and are unhyphenated Americans. They raise their families and contribute to life with their highest effort. They realize that black people have been wronged in the past, but they realize that they themselves have the power to create their own destiny without help from the government or the crutch of excuses. And for every dumb ass Antoine Dodson they show, they need to show his counterpart who is buying his own house across town working his hind end off.

3. Dumb asses like I used to be need to open their eyes and not judge based on the actions of a few and the small narrow portrait painted by the media. We need to open our eyes to the Americans who happen to be black; not the celebrated "BLACK AMERICANS" that the media,Al Sharpton,.50 Cent, and Political Correctness want us to see.

Just my opinion; point out my errors without hanging an offensive label on me if you will.
