This post probably doesn't belong here, but I can't find a place for it.
Can anyone tell me why businesses here in general only hire people that are born and raised here. It seems that if you don't know anyone or have a well established big family in the area, you can't get a job.
I moved to the area because I was told what a great place it is to be and raise a child. I'm a single parent so I took the chance, only to find out that it was a mistake. The schools are great, but finding employment being an 'outsider' is almost impossible.
Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

You may be looking at this the wrong way Sunshine. It is like this anywhere you go. I have been to many different states and they are all the same. Seems like you or your family cant do anything because you dont fit in or didnt grow up in that area. If you are a single mom and do not have a job, you have to keep looking. There is something out there for you and your children. Dont look back because, believe me, its even harder to go home. Keep your head up and dont let these things get you down. North Alabama IS the best place to raise your children.
Hello Sunshine,
I want to encourage you as you are taking care of your family and looking for a job. I don't think it is simply because you are an "outsider," which you are not anymore. Smiler
Jobs ARE difficult to find here, as compared to many other areas of the country. It seems that there are plenty of restaurants and retail jobs, but not many other options. Hopefully that will change.

Regardless of that, keep looking, knocking on doors and asking the people you meet in the area if they are aware of employement opportunities. It will probably take a while, but there are jobs here. Also, make an honest assesment of yourself as you are going through the interview process. How are you presenting yourself? Is your resume up to date, with no typo's (like typing "advise" instead of "advice?") Smiler
What about your education/experience level? It might benefit you to enroll in one of the colleges/universities in the area to become more marketable.

You have made a great choice in moving here for your children's sake--that was NOT a mistake. And you may have to work at something (at least for a while) that is not your desired job. You obviously have courage and initiative, so make sure that comes through when you are talking to a potential employer.

In addition to searching the TimesDaiy job listings, check out www.indeed.com. It is a job site that pulls job leads from several major job posting websites, including TimesDaily. I wish you the best as you continue your search. I've "been there and done that," and know how frustrating it can be.
Sweety, I admire your courage, and your desire to get a job to raise your children in the best possible place, and you are right, we ARE the best, hehe...

Why don't you tell us a little of your experience, and maybe someone can send you a private message telling you about something they know that is available???

God Bless you and your Children in the coming year,... He WILL look after you!!
I feel your pain, after moving to the Shoals I have found the wages offered (when they are offered) to be 30 to 75% less than I could make in other places. My wife found the same thing. I suggest that you find something to do with your children and hit the road. You get used to being home 8 days a month, its not that bad. I think that the 8 days a month I spend in the Shoals makes it worth while. I dont suggest spending a lot of time and money on education, it is seldom checked out.

Heub, you are correct about the wages, but you also have to consider that the cost of living here is much cheaper. I live in a modest 3 bedroom brick/vynal house. Here it is appraised at 80,000, but a friend from Rhode Island came for a visit, and she told me if my house was sitting there in Providence, she (a real estate agent) could sell it for 200,000 easy!!

I know prices are going up every day on heating/cooling and groceries, but we do have it better than anywhere I know of. I have checked other places, houses are out of sight, rent is out of sight, and this area is not only a great area to live in, it is cheaper.

If a person isn't a college degree'd person, with experience up the yahoo, then general jobs is mostly all that is available to them here in Alabama, but at least the rent/house payments are WAY lower than anywhere else.

I am thankful for my job, I am not poor, but even with what I make, another term of Republicans, I will probably fit the poor catagory...

I think this is a great place to raise kids, and even though we do have crime, it is much lower than most other places one could pick to live in.

This woman is wanting a good place to raise her children, and if her experience was known, maybe she (since she is new to the area) could be pointed in the right direction for a good job.?.?

I agree on housing costs, I do some work in the DC area and it is crazy! My house in that area would easily be worth 5 times what it is in the shoals, but.........that helps make my point go make their money and live in the shoals. I only apply housing and insurance to my cost of living index, cars, big macs and clothes all cost the same.

Yeah, but most of them will work for $30 a day!!! To them that is a lot of money... that is why there are 20 people renting one apartment, ya know?
Sunshine, not very long ago a forum member, sorry but I don't recall who, said they had job openings for people with computer skills. Sorry I can't be more help, but I'll look at past subjects and see if I can find it.In the mean time, WELCOME to the area. we are not perfect [not Mayberry] by any standard. But what place can claim to be.

I know what you mean. The good news is that eventually it will work in your favor. You just have to get your foot in the door in whatever field you want to work in. Take part-time, temporary, gofer, whatever to get to know some people in your field. Then eventually you will be on the receiving end of this system.

That was me, if sunshine would like to send me a resume I may be able to help out.
CWC: I do know how to spell. I got the flu and just now getting over it some. I will check ineed.com out today.

To ALL: Thank you very much for all the great and kind responses. I do appreciate it very much.

My highest education equals business trade school, since I went to school in Europe. I have over 20 yrs experience working in positions ranging from being a clerk to office manager.

I'm looking for any kind of job I can possible do, not only office work. The only field that I'm not looking for is production work, I tried it and it's not for me.

I know the wages are lower here than in a lot of places, but in general so is the cost of living, at least to some part.

Thanks again to all of you.
That is very nice of you Heub!!! I am impressed Smiler Especially (noting her last post) she is an early riser, last post 4:44 AM... that is a plus, for sure!!!

Doctors in this area are always looking for Office Mgr. I know it is because they can be so difficult to work for, but the pay is usually pretty good.

Like Joy said, just keep getting to know everyone, and I know I will keep you in mind when I am out and about...

Your prayers may just be answered by posting this. Heub is already interested in your resume Smiler GOOD LUCK, and stay in touch to let us know how it is going!!!!
