It's been around 20 years since Alabamians have been able to vote on a lottery measure.  It's a topic of discussion again and it has cleared (barely) one hurdle to get on the ballot.  There are lots of strong feelings regarding a lottery and those that are pro-lottery will point to the last 20 years and say look at the amount of money that could have gone for the State Education or Infrastructure.  Opponents point to the damage that a lottery would do to families stating that money that would go to families would be spent, wasted, on the lottery.  I think there should be better arguments against because I don't buy that one but either way I do think it is something that should come up for a vote and let the people of Alabama decide.

If the majority of voters vote against it then so be it but for the opponents I believe it should be defeated at the ballot box and not defeated by keeping it from a vote in the first place.  Time will tell if we'll see it on the ballot but I believe it should be offered to the public and let the citizens have a vote rather than it being decided by the folks in Montgomery alone.

interesting that it seems states which have had lottery for years don't have lower taxes, better roads, less expensive college and more.  Maybe they have better education.   Challenge is we can't trust government with more money, they have zero business sense.

Like "going wet" was supposed to help counties. It didn't...it brought added costs.  I don't drink, but I would buy a lottery ticket.

Going wet certainly DID help counties--just ask them if they would like to sacrifice that tax revenue back to the bootleggers who reaped it all before.  And just ask the restaurant owners and patrons if they would like to regress back to the days when you could not have a drink, a beer, or a glass of wine with your meal.  Just out of curiosity, exactly what added costs did it bring to the counties?

Crank,,, challenge is often money isn't handled properly.  Many elected don't understand budgets and like kids in a candy store.  I remember conversation with a Ga. principle, her comment was if one school  gets something they all do. Even if they don't need it. Politicians have found ways to spend on their favorite programs, which to many times ends up in a relative or friends pocket.  I am not against lottery, just caution how it helps.  I have seen many states with lottery that have other taxes higher than Alabama.

1130 said "  I have seen many states with lottery that have other taxes higher than Alabama." and is exactly right.  The problem is if you cannot usually manage and make it with what you have then you aren't going to make it with more or less because you haven't learned how to manage what you have.  It's like I've told some of my relatives and friends who say I'd be happy, just if I could win the Lottery.  I tell them if you can't find a way to be happy with what you have then you will never be happy no matter what you get.

There is a scripture that says something similar and maybe I'll find it later because right now I have to run to pick up kids at school.  Politicians that misuse money and can't run a government with what they have now will only misuse more money and still won't be able to accomplish much.

If we are doing comparisons look at Tennessee and Florida or Texas (and yes I know all different situations) they are doing what they are doing all without a State income tax.  True they may get funds another way but whereas property tax rates were always used to say Alabamas is sooo much less than Tennessee or Sales Tax etc... Alabama's taxes have started to catch up and raise.  Tennessee draws a large number of people that don't like State income taxes and yet they seem to be doing well with education and infrastructure.  Nashville is booming and exploding and is more desirable than ever.  Texas also is a big growing state with lots of positives.  Florida is another story and a lot of it's draw is the location with the Ocean, beaches, but mostly the weather.

I've lived many places and I chose to live in Alabama and I like/love Alabama.  I'm from Tennessee and I love Tennessee also but to me there is no place like the South, to live, and no place like North Alabama.  This area is so vastly above so many other places in quality of life and people are also great here.  Roads and getting around not so much so but hey that can be improved if people want.
