Alabama Power linked to Bush

US power company linked to Bush is named in database as a top polluter

An American power company with close financial links to President George Bush has been named as one of the world's top producers of global warming pollution.

The first-ever worldwide database of such pollution also reveals the rapid growth in global-warming emissions by power plants in China, South Africa and India. Power plants already produce 40 per cent of US greenhouse gas and 25 per cent of the world's.

But it is the enormous carbon footprint of Southern Company – among the largest financiers of Republican Party politicians – which has raised eyebrows. Southern's employees handed George Bush $217,047 to help him get elected twice, and they and the company have contributed an extraordinary $6.2m to Republican campaigns since 1990 according to the Centre for Responsive Politics.

A single Southern Company plant in Juliette, Georgia already emits more carbon dioxide annually that Brazil's entire power sector. The company is in the top two of America's dirtiest utility polluters and sixth worst in the world.

Apart from vague promises by the Democratic presidential hopefuls, there is no pressure on this or any other power company to clean up their act and cut back on CO2 emissions.

Politicians from both parties fear the influence of Southern, which spends huge sums both on lobbying and on political campaigns and is among the biggest power players in Washington. It has seen off numerous attempts to impose controls on the amounts of pollution it pumps out.

The link between massive cash contributions by America's power companies and political arm-twisting in Washington has rarely been put into such sharp relief. Environmentalists have long suspected that President Bush's dogged refusal to sign up to international agreements to control global warming was linked to campaign contributions.

Think SOuthern C. ain't tight with the GOP? Read this:

Dwight Evans, Executive Vice President at Southern Company, is a Pioneer in President Bush’s reelection campaign – meaning he has pledged to raise at least $100,000 in hard-money donations. [3] Stephen Wakefield, a Southern Company Vice President, was a member of the President’s Energy Department transition team. James Langdon, a Pioneer in 2000 and 2004, works at Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld, a lobbying firm that has represented Southern Company. He was on the Energy Department transition team as well. Rob Leeburn, a 2004 Pioneer, works at Troutman Sanders, a lobbying firm that represents Southern Company. Lanny Griffith, a principal in the lobbying firm Barbour, Griffith & Rogers, which has lobbied on behalf of Southern Company, is a 2004 Ranger, meaning he has pledged to bundle $200,000 in contributions for Bush. His partner at the firm, Haley Barbour, met with Vice President Cheney’s Energy Task Force and other senior Energy Department advisors during the time the national energy policy was being drafted. He is a former Republican National Committee chairman and is now Governor of Mississippi – where Entergy has applied for an Early Site Permit to site a potential new reactor.

Why don't you prove that its propaganda. I expect you to say, ''well, because I didn't see it on fox news, the republican news channel''.

Hoax? So, I guess you can prove its all a Hoax?
Yes, I'll prove it's all a hoax.
The hottest decade on record is the 1930's.... No Tahoes, Escalades, or Hummers ridin down the dirt roads of that day. After that there was a cooling trend that ran up to the 80's. It was cooling during the biggest boom in the industrial age. In the 70's alarmists(much like the ones we have now) screamed that by the mid 90's we'd be in the beginning of another Ice Age. DID YOU GET THAT??? 30 YEARS AGO THEY SAID ICE AGE!!!
Do you remember a couple of years ago when Katrina hit? We had several big storms that year and what did we hear from Gore and his groupies..."It's global warming!!! Global warming is causing this, and it will get worse every year from here!!!!".... PBA...hey, uh..how many significant hurricanes have hit our shores since then???? Exactly. See, it's a guess to predict the weather for next week, why would you fall for a con from someone trying to predict the weather next year, next decade, and even next century...that's idiocy.
See, climate change could very well be happening...climate change has happened since the beginning of time. That big ol fire ball in the sky...you may have seen it, it floats up there in the sky during the day...see that fire ball, and it's proximity to the Earth, that's what warms us and cools us. That's all that can change our climate. Weather is inheritly unpredictable....has been for all my 28 years. Some summers are hotter than others, some winters colder than others, some summers start earlier than others, some winters start earlier than others....some years the storms are fierce, some they seem non-existant...some years the droughts are tough on farmers, some years it rains too much to gather the harvest. That's proof...that's evidence...the unknown is the proof. The unpredictablity of weather and the fact that it has always been that way is all the proof you need. But hey, if you wanna send Al Gore your money for carbon credits then feel free. It's your money and your right to waste it how you please...me, I prefer to ride to Tunica.
