This is funny, because it reminds me of going through Kentucky once, reading the map to my destination. I took the assigned state road and it got narrower and more narrow until I drove in a cornfield. About a 1/4 mile in(the cornfield), the road suddenly ended, so I had to back up that 1/4 mile to turn around!
Italy has maps with hundreds of miles of projected roads shown as finished.

I had the same thing happen in Tenn. Wound up in a cotton patch field road, but it ran into the highway exactly where the map showed it would.
That picture looks like where the Natchez Trace once ended just south of Hwy 72. Used to go pass the barricades with my girl. The pavement went on for about 1/4 mile before it ended just like the pic. Was a GREAT parking place.
