I heard the wreck that killed the young girl last week (she ran under a stopped school bus at a minimum speed of 65 mph)was because she was busy texting (to be more accurate, she was sending a picture to her Facebook)... when are people going to learn? If I get a message that can't wait for an answer, I pull off the road or hand the phone to someone else in the car and tell them what to send. I don't know what it is going to take for EVERYONE to realize how dangerous it is to use the cell phone while driving (even just talking on it is distracting). PULL OVER IF IT CAN'T WAIT. I'm the last person on earth to want to sue someone, but by golly if I am ever involved in an accident and the other person is at fault and they were texting or talking on the phone, I am going to do as much as I can to that person in court. It will probably take a LOT of people doing that exact thing to maybe put an end to this, or at least get people to cut down on it.

It is an awful situation. But we really don't know what happened and can only speculate. It was in the afternoon, sun was bright, she probably couldn't see the bus that well, she was texting or talking on the phone. I even feel that if the bumper laws were in affect on the rear of buses dropping the rear bumper down to a normal height for most cars now, she might have survived the crash instead of her auto going under the bus. By her pictures, she looked to be a very beautiful girl and it is a shame our world will be without her. My prayers go out to her family and all her friends.

Was she traveling east or west? From the photos I thought she was traveling east, so the sun would not have been a problem. Not sure about the bumper being lower. If it was lower it might not have helped, but it would not hurt to try it.

The death of this young girl is very sad. From looking at her picture's on her Facebook, she took alot of picture's of herself while driving. Hopefully, some young people will learn from what happened to her.
My opinion of talking on the phone while driving is no different than talking to someone in the car with you. When driving, I always use my bluetooth to call or talk on my cell phone. With it, I still have both hands on the wheel.
It took us what, 30 years to get from car phones in some luxury cars to cell phones that practically everyone has. Now some are suggesting we come up with technology to disable the very thing we all "wanted." Instant communication everywhere we go. In the car, in the movie theater, in line at the bank, on the golf course...we never have to be out of touch! Sometimes I don't answer my phone when it's sitting right beside me at home. I don't feel compelled to be available 24/7. The problem isn't technology, it's people having sense enough to know when and where it's inappropriate or unnecessary to use it.
Right on, lawguy. Witchesdance, the technology to do that already exists. It's in use in many places such as schools and movie theaters and te like where cellphones would be a detrimental distraction. Passive shielding and active signal killers have already been in use for a long time now. It would be no big deal to incorporate active signal canceling into a vehicle.

That is exactly the problem, people DON'T have enough sense not to endanger themselves and others.
Buses are HUGE, painted bright yellow and have flashing yellow lights all over when they are a certain number of feet from where they intend to stop, then once they are stopped the lights are red. Don't tell me they can't be seen and if the sun had been in her face, she should have lowered the visor, that will block a lot of the sun and enable you to see the FLASHING lights. For 3 years, I lived in Florence and worked in Decatur. Going to work the sun was in my face, coming home it was in my face. I lowered the visor, SLOWED DOWN, and never had any problem seeing those HUGE, BRIGHT YELLOW buses.

So, much like the government does to idiots, we just deactivate it for them and screw educating them. That is why this nation (especially teens) is becoming a country of zombies. Nobody has to think for themselves anymore. What a crock!

I'm sorry, I don't want my family in danger, while waiting on some ignorant moron to be educated. Some people are too stupid and stubborn to be educated.

Didn't the Government legislate the installation of seat belts? What is the difference? I think this is a case of you being like my husband, "I know how to drive and use a cell phone, but not everyone else does".

AMEN!!!! Guess Jerk doesn't realize how many officers it will take to keep up with all those texting while driving or how can you even tell if they are (until they have a wreck, like the girl last week). Putting heavy fines on people for doing it will not stop others... most of them tend to think they will not be caught, and a majority of them will not, until it's too late.
My point is, the government has no right to tell us when we can or cannot have or phones on. If that is the case, then where does personal responsibility end and "big brother" begin. Sorry, but I refuse to give in to the thought of letting the government have any more control on me than it already does. And just for the record, I try to not talk on my phone when I am driving, much less, text.
I think that personal responsibility ends when people refuse to take it. In this case, people are being killed by irresponsible drivers who insist on playing with their phones instead of driving. The government is stepping in to protect me from the 16 year old girl blabbing to her boyfriend about prom while driving her shiny new car 70 MPH down the highway and not paying attention to things like red lights, school buses, and other cars.
Yeah, Homer. That'd prolly be a bad idea. Best to stick to pickin' an' flingin'. Wink

Calypso-You're absolutely correct. However, if you got yer honker stuck in a phone-say, sending the idiotic picture ya just took of yourself looking all bad and flashing stupid gang signs at 70 MPH to your MySpace page-You're STILL not gonna see the big yellow bus with the flashing lights.....'Cause yer not looking where yer going. Or at what's in front of you.
Not too swift if yer butt happens to be closing with an immovable object at around 100 feet per second.

Good thing those kids were on that huge, tough bus. Also good that she didn't become aware that there was something besides her in the road at the last second and swerve and hit the kid outside the bus instead. While ol' Charlie chlorinates the shallow end of the gene pool-it's best to avoid collateral damage.
It is barbaro, the only professional athlete worth his salt, so to speak, and the only one I care about...

Kids don't understand that they are driving a 3,000 lb. weapon....never think of it, and don't see the consequences of their actions. The "adults" are supposed to do what they have always done...try to pass laws to protect teenagers from themselves....but I think the gene pool has already gone dry. We, as a society, are becoming less intelligent everyday.

Let me clarify. My problem is not with passing a law to ban texting or cell phone use in my car. My problem is with those who would like the government to have installed on cars, devices that would automatically turn my phone of without my control. I cannot and will not support that.

What is so important that you would have to text while driving? Could you not pull off the road and do it? I read a while back that Germany was testing something that could eventually become standard on EVERY car and cell phone. A chip in the phone and engine of the car that would "sense" each other. The phone would "know" the car was in motion, and as long as you were within 12 inches of this "range" the only signal that would go out while the car is moving would be an emergency (911) call. A person in the passenger seat or back seat could text/talk, but not the driver. Sounds good to me... anything to keep idiots from doing anything other than paying attention while driving and keep everyone safe.
This chip works within 12 inches of what? The steering wheel? The driver's seat? I'm not a big person, but I can put my hand in the passenger seat while I'm driving, so I reckon I could still talk / text / surf the internet / play games on my cell phone if I wanted to. There are lots of things I can do in a car while driving that are dangerous... eat a hamburger, smoke a cigarette, shave, change the CDs in my 6-disc changer, read a book, have sex, watch a movie, play with a yo-yo. Are they going to come out with smart chips for those things, too?

LOL. I guess you wouldn't. That would then make you an "inspokenjerk." Yes?

Spaketh Moose: (<-Er, just TRY and say THAT 5 times fast!)
