Washington, D.C. — Republican presidential candidate John McCain's family background as the son and grandson of admirals has given him a worldview shaped by the military, "and he has a hard time thinking beyond that," Sen. Tom Harkin, D-Ia., said Friday.

"I think he's trapped in that," Harkin said in a conference call with Iowa reporters. "Everything is looked at from his life experiences, from always having been in the military, and I think that can be pretty dangerous."

Harkin said that "it's one thing to have been drafted and served, but another thing when you come from generations of military people and that's just how you're steeped, how you've learned, how you've grown up."

Another Idiot Leftist Democrat Politician! Ah, but I repeat myself!

A guy has a family history of service to the country, served himself in wartime and as a POW, and that's a bad thing.

Completely idiotic. What those people forget is that the military doesn't go to war on their own, politicians have to send them.

I wonder how many of those democrats have a family history of politics? I think that's a lot more dangerous than carrying on a family tradition of military service.
Harkin is a double idiot. He was a Navy pilot, but lied about combat service over Vietnam and recon service over Cuba. Actually, he ferried aircraft for repairs between Japan and the Phillipines.

Robert Heinlein wrote Starship Trooper as a spoof, but some days his ideas look good -- no political office without military, police or fire service, first.
I swore to myself that I wouldn't bite...but here it goes Big Grin

I understand what everyone is saying here and agree it wasn't a very well thought out statement. Granted I haven't gone to the link provided but from what I read in the original posting, I get the idea that he is not condemning McCain and/or his family for their military service but rather implying that there is a deep militaristic frame of mind.
You all know what I'm talking about... Wink

You are much to easily giving him a pass on really STUPID statement. It was also insulting to me as a volunteer member of the military.

How come is it when you're posting Howard cannot be found?

Very true. That's why the democrats are holding up Senator Webbs GI Bill and denied funding to the troops. Oh wait, that was the Republicans. I apologize for the confusion.
Anything to make you feel better Howard. It's the superior bill.

On the bill and the bi-partisan support it's already garnered.

"We now have 57 co-sponsors in the United States Senate and more than 300 in the House, and a good percentage of those are Republicans. So, we have 11 Republican co-sponsors here in the Senate, we have more than 90 Republican co-sponsors in the House.

The difficulty has been this administration and this is what‘s so confusing to me. If you‘re George Bush, and you‘re at the end of your tenure, what a moment you could have if you had a Rose Garden signing ceremony with Republicans, Democrats, veterans groups, saying—this group that I‘ve often called the next greatest generation here, we‘re giving you the greatest benefit we can."

To his credit, Senator Webb spoke well of McCain even after all of this saying,

"I‘ve known John McCain for 30 years. I‘ve considered him to be a friend and I have said a number of times that I think if I could get John McCain to sit down, he‘s been so busy and listened to what we have in this bill, I can‘t imagine he wouldn‘t support it."
Heroic objection? ROFL I have seriously heard it all now. There was no budget issues with the Bill. That is regurgitated White House bull. I swear, has anyone looked to see if Bush has his hand up McCain's backside? He's sounding more and more like Bush everyday.

You are right on one account Howard. It was easy to go along with. It was clearly the right thing to do.
This bill caused no budget issues. In fact, McCain has given no justification for not signing the bill other than it was incentive for people to leave the military after 3 years. So what? Thats their choice.

Beyond that, McCain has recently said, on television, when pressed about this, "thats the kind of thing I can do as President." He was referring to providing benefits for the troops. Still offering no explanation as to why he won't sign the bill. It's simply political posturing.

Deal with it.

"heroic objection" That kills me.
They aren't friends? Why has GW went out of his way to have McCain to the white house? Why did he celebrate McCain's birthday with him? It is entirely incorrect to say they are not friends. I guess with your blinders on it is hard to see the pictures of Bush and McSame embracing.

I know why he isn't signing it. He is posturing. He wants to get through his bill with his name on it. McCain has been asked by everyone in the media, other than the softball lobbers at Fox News for his reasoning as to not signing the bill. He's talked around it and outright avoided answering it.

I know I make a practice of going around an hugging my enemies like they are my long last daddy.

Rehashing old stories and b.s.

Bill Ayers has a LOOSE association to Obama. I know you have tried your best to tie them together, it's simply not there. They served together on a charity board. How dare they!

Rev Wright is old news and Obama met it head on, while most Republicans would tuck their tail between their legs and run.

As far as Rezko, Obama has been more than candid about their relationship. Poor judgement, nothing more, nothing less.

Obama/Rezko
