I never knew my dad owned a gun until I was about 16. My friends whose families owned guns kept them locked up, away from us kids.

Isn't this just common sense?

Would you feel better if he had stabbed her to death with a kitchen knife while she slept? Or suffocated her with a dry cleaning bag?

What difference does the manner he committed murder make, rather than the fact that he did commit murder? Would she be any less dead?

Good points, but he did use a gun. Hey, I'm a gun owner. I just think it's irresponsible to let 11 year old kids with emotional problems have their personal guns and ammo.

Amen to that, Gun's are used in more murders than knives especially when kids are behind them. As a parent myself these parent that give their children access to these guns need to be punished just like this child will be. you don't put a gun in a childs hand and expect them not to use it out of anger. Times have changed. Mad

In my opinion, the key words in your reply are:

Irresponsible
Emotional problems

Yes, it was irresponsible on someone's part to allow an 11 year old to possess or have access to a firearm after he had demonstrated a hatred for the father's girlfriend (I love that euphemism for a woman that's living with him and is 8 months pregnant with his child). At fault here are the uncle and the cousin (as well as all the other family and friends who didn't take action)for not bringing the boy's statements to the father or authorities. The father is at fault for not realizing what the family and friends claim was obvious.

And the child is at fault for deciding to take the life of another human being. 11 is old enough to know that killing is not the way to solve your problems. He hunted with the gun, he knew what would result from his actions.

Not at fault here are the millions of legitimate gun owners, of all ages. They should not be held accountable for the poor decisions and criminal actions of this group of head in the sand losers.

Sassy! There lay the key words!
I am not so convinced it was emotional issue's at all, but rather PURE jealousy.
Maybe I am looking too far into it, but it all definitely sounds fishy!

Quoted:
"He actually told my son that he wanted to do that to her," said Houk's brother-in-law, Jason Kraner. "There was an issue with jealousy."

Then why in the H3ll was he allowed to possess a weapon or even be left alone with this woman?
Where does the responsibility lie in that?

There is a LOT of negligence all over this story!
Why isn't he being charged with a double homicide? I've never felt a woman's fetus kick, it's always been her baby:

"Brown was charged Saturday as an adult in the death of 26-year-old Kenzie Marie Houk, who was eight months pregnant, Lawrence County District Attorney John Bongivengo said. Houk's fetus died within minutes due to a lack of oxygen, Lawrence County Coroner Russell Noga said."
My hubby is a gun collector. Guns have always been in our house. Our kids knew from a young age, they were NOT TOYS. The guns are not in a locked safe (how do I protect myself that way?, but we do keep them out of plain site.
The boy was disturbed and jealous. He happened to have a shotgun. He could just as easily bashed her head in with his brand new LOUISVILLE SLUGGER.

Don't blame the gun, they don't shoot by themselves. Just as cars don't kill and knives don't jump off the rack and attack people.

I 100% agree with you LMM.
We are talking about an 8 month pregnancy here.
That baby was almost ready to enter this world & could had survived easily at that point of the pregnancy.

My daddy was a Police Officer & I grew up with guns in my home.
I was taught at a very young age that Guns Kill. There is no coming back from that.

I, too, have several hand guns and have taught my daughter the same lesson.
My dad had me at the shooting range at the age of 8.
Some may think that is too young, but I found it to be beneficial.
I got to feel the power of that Colt .45 and knew exactly what the possibilities were.

Gun Safety is up to the adults, and it is completely necessary if you own a gun of any kind!
