And if their cheating now, they'll continue to cheat. Games were rigged for the now-disgraced ex-mayor of Birminham to win hundres-of-thoudsands of dollars. A law suit has been filed.
That's why if we are going to have gambling, we need a legitimate gaming commission to oversee and regulate it. In Nevada, casinos are regulated almost as tightly as banks. There have been a few instances of illegal chips in machines, etc. and there was heck to pay for the machine companies when it was discovered. Nevada has figured out that they don't need to cheat to make money--house odds always win eventually. Of course a big part of the problem is that slot machines can pretty much be programmed any way the owners want--there is no requirement of certain payouts in most states. Video poker in Nevada must be completely random--no programming to control payouts. In Mississippi and other states, that's not always the case. They can be considered the same as slots and don't always have to be completely random. Anyway, my point is that if we ever end up with any sort of gambling, there needs to be tight controls over the industry.

Put a whole strip in downtown Florence and some boats down at McFarland.

Next to the "sex shop". Man some of these views are embarrassing. I really didn't think people here were this backwards, but I wasn't raised in the Baptist church and my folks LOVE Tunica, I have been but don't really like it that much.
The only thing I can think about is my dad talking about all the bootleggers here and how he missed the state line clubs.
It took 50 years to outlaw prohibition in North Alabama, well some of it still has prohibition and the main problem to progress is preachers.
Rocky,

I think you are on to something here.

People like JOY have no idea of what a casino is other than what granny told her about or she has seen on TV.

People in the shoals pick and choose what they want the bible to say about what they can and cannot do....or better yet what other people cannot do.

Its like the other thread going on right now about a "sex shop" on mobile st. How does this person know what is in there....someone else told them.

Hell 90% of the people in florence cant even drive much less tell someone else how to run their life and spend their own money!!!!

I used the words "religious fanatics" because they are the ones that usually try to stop anything fun from coming into the Bible Belt, especially this area. I'm not a "gambling fanatic". I go to Tunica because I enjoy it, just like I enjoy going to a movie or a flea market but I wouldn't go into shut down mode if I couldn't do it.
And no, I'm not wrong. You wait & see if the "Christian Folks" don't try & stop Franklin County from going wet.
How many of you gambling suppoerters would also support legalized prostitution? I should be able to spend my money any way i want to right? How about legalized drugs? Who has the right to tell me how to spend my money? I want it to be legal to own an automatic assault rifle too. The government has no right to tell me what I can't own. And, so what if I want to drink and drive. If you don't like it stay off the road. And who says I have to wear clothes when I go to the mall. It is supposed to be a free country.

Exactly what I thought when I was quized on "how dare you tell me how to spend my money." I think I'll open a brothel next door to some of these people.
ferrellj,

People like you and JOY have asked the govt to police moral issues....although I dont agree with prostitution I also am not afraid to tell you that the govt has no right to stop it.

This is really how backwards things are.....its a womans body right? She has the right to kill an unborn child but not sleep with someone for money. WTF?!?!

If gambling is so bad they should post state troops at the state line and not let anyone back in the state with a lottery ticket...you know why they dont do this.....they are praying you win so they can tax you.

When will you people wake up....they could give a rats ass less about gambling being wrong or right....its how do we tax it!!!

SIN TAX.......they have you eating out of the palm of thier hand and you are too blind in your rage to see it

It's not the morality at all. I play $20 poker with the guys on ocassion and I've been to Tunica, though I probably won't go back because of the smoke. I've been involved with addiction programs in the past and have seen some of these people. The problem I have with legalized gambling is the problems it causes poor people that have addiction problems. It's like opening a liquor store next door to a recovering alcoholic. If you'll read all my posts you'll see I'm for personal freedom and against the government on a lot of things. The liberals are always talking about wanting to help the poor and they seldom back up their words.
I heard a so called expert on the radio from i think Rutgers University friday about this issue.

She said that 5% of people that gamble are the true addicts that everyone is talking about. The ones that will gamble away the kids grocery money. 5%.....this is not 5% of the population but 5% of the people that gamble.

Lets say that 50% of the people in Alabama gamble....so now we are down to making laws for only 2.5% of the people of Alabama....I am sure it is really more like .5% of the people or less.

Bob Riley has succeded in keeping gambling out of the state of Alabama through his tenure here and is about to step out of office and collect all the money from Mississippi that he has sent to them.

People are worried about the citizens of Alabama blowing all their money....just think about how many people during the summer travel through this state on the way to Florida that could be spending money here that this state needs!!
Where did this so called unnamed expert get her information? Where did you get your info that 50% of the people in Alabama gamble? Anyone can make up numbers. There are other experts out there that can give numbers relating to other states that have bingo and lottery and according to them the benefits are just not there economically for the state. I personally don't care if they pass it or not, they won't be getting any of my money. I do know it will hurt a small percentage of minorities that the liberals are always crying out to help.

Nothing wrong with someone living in a county voting for it to be dry. After all, they live there, so they should have a say so. Has nothing to do with there religious affiliation. Sounds to me you just don't like people who have opposing views from you. If you don't like the democratic process, then no one is stopping you from leaving and moving to a wet city.

Also, there are a lot of church going people who gamble and will be voting against it in Alabama. This is not the answer to our money issues. Bringing in businesses that take money and mostly give back nothing is not a success story. We need to be focusing on bring back manufacturing jobs if we are going to prosper.

Legalized prostitution: None of my business. And it's not like you boys aren't going to, how do I put this....get it anyway. Why not allow a girl to make a living in the exchange? Just not something the gov't should be regulating.

Legalized drugs: Do you realize the vast majority of addictions in this country are to prescription drugs? Prescription drug abuse trumps meth, coke, etc. So do we outlaw prescription drugs? And I don't care who smokes pot as long as they keep it away from my family. Really, there are more important issues in this country to debate. Legalize it!

Automatic assault rifle: No one needs an automatic assault rifle to kill deer or protect a home; you know this. They should be outlawed because they are not useful at all and are very harmful.

Drinking and driving: Really? You're going to compare gambling to this? How does gambling impact my neighbor? That's right, it doesn't. Drunk driving does.

Not wearing clothes to the mall: I don't have a problem with it if you're, um, man enough to show up that way.

No different than drinking and driving or drug sales. Keep them away from you and all should be well. And some people do use then for 'enterainment' purposes. Wink
I am not a gambler. I have been to Atlantic City several years ago before my kids were born. I would NOT want that brought to this area. Pitiful people sitting begging for more money to go in and gamble away. Yeah, that sounds like the type of place we need to raise our familites in! We have enough theft here now without people becoming more and more desperate to have gambling money. I would much rather pay more tax for what we need here. Let the gamblers go wherever they need to so they can waste what money they have been given. Hopefully they won't become jobless and wish they still had it in their pockets!

Gamble for the children!

Get drunk for the children!

Smoke for the children!

Heck, legalize prostitution, target the State's 'cut' (the state ALWAYS get a cut someway) for Education and then you can say...

DO it for the children!

I AM BEHIND YOU 100% ON THIS! WE NEED TO GET THE CASH FLOWING IN ALABAMA TO BETTER FUND EDUCATION!! LET THE PEOPLE VOTE RILEY!!! ALABAMA NEEDS CASINOS, A LOTTERY, AND A PRO FOOTBALL TEAM!! LOOK AT ALL THE JOBS THAT WOULD CREATE! Cool
I think the ones that vote it out in this state but go to other states to gamble, are being hypocrites. I think the main reason and only reason there is so much stink about it is that Riley can't figure out how much of a cut he can get off of it if bingo/gambling becomes legal. So he is against it all the way. You can not compare Atlantic City, Las Vegas or the sort to Alabama by saying people will be homeless because they gamble. You cannot control how they live their lives and spend their money. You might think you can, buy you can't. If you did, there would be no drugs in this area, no crime of any kind or even moochers off welfare. But our president wants it that way. So we have to depend on the government for everything.
