I heard a discussion on the radio tonight about the Rally held in Montgomery today.
It was said that the Statehouse steps turned into a shouting match when casino supporters showed up & that Riley's speech was difficult to hear over the opponents shouting.
It was reported that the governor said there would not be a vote of the people to bring gambling to Alabama.
What's your thoughts on this?

Are we going to be voting for proceeds to go to the Education Fund? Seems like everything that is debated, the final cry is "the SCHOOLS need the money!"

Gamble for the children!

Get drunk for the children!

Smoke for the children!

Heck, legalize prostitution, target the State's 'cut' (the state ALWAYS get a cut someway) for Education and then you can say...

DO it for the children!
It's called a "Sin Tax." It's used to tax things that people "shouldn't" be doing but do anyway. Gambling is a fantastic revenue source for a lot of states even though it is looked down upon by the religious right. If people are willing to do something that might not be approved by others, then why not tax them? We're taxed for everything else...driving, food, clothes, etc. why not make money off gambling?

You are crazy! Plain and simple. There is no point in argueing with you, you are crazy. No amount of reasoning will break the crazy shell. You are crazy. Logic, facts and situations which support gambling revenue mean nothing to you, you are crazy.

This Joy character, and I am convinced she is actually that crazy lady at the McCain rally who said Obama wasn't American, is crazy. No amount of reasoning will convince her of the benefits of a gambling tax, she is crazy. You can show her every statistic supporting the tax money that is lost to other states by Alabama not legalizing gambling and it makes no difference, she is crazy.
The preacher said it, the church endorses it, and she believes it. She is crazy.

totally agree. wonder if she thinks participating in a 401K is gambling? because it definitely is. you can be risky and put money in latin america, because it has very high returns, but you also take the chance of it losing high too. thats the problme with these people who play the religious card, they pick and choose whats right. **** hypocrites.

I think gambling is more of a "stupid" tax than a "sin" tax, isn't it?

Have you seen kids go without food because their parents lost all their money gambling? Gambling is just as addictive as any drug. Just what we need for the people that can afford it the least.

umm...nobody is forcing anyone to gamble, if you cant control something you shouldnt do it, simple as that. i gamble occassionally in tunica because 1. i can afford it, 2. it's "entertainment", no different than going to see a movie or eat a nice restaurant, when i'm out of money i leave. just because some idiot's cant do that doesnt mean the rest should have to suffer!

Suffer? You go to Tunica. You said so yourself. If you just love the mountains, you can drive to North Carolina or Tennessee to see the mountains. Should Alabama BUILD a massive mountain range and truck in snow so that no one has to leave the state to 'enjoy' that?
ha!...nice comparison there. there's never going to be an agreement reached on gambling. but i think riley is afraid to send it to a vote because he's scared it'll pass. which ya know they did just pass the property tax increase for education, so maybe that'll help some. but until there's some major changes Alabama's school system will continue to fall behind.
Nice comparison? I do not think so

"They did just pass the property tax increase for education"

Sin Tax

Do you see a trend here? Everyone has been brain washed to believe that it is ok to tax the other person. "I dont do so tax the hell out of it"

We should cry foul every time they want to raise taxes yet we do not. I myself am tired of working for the government 40% of the time!!!
Anyone that thinks that by legalizing gambling it will help their schools would be interested in some beach front property I have for sale in Tennessee. Schools would see very little if any of that money. Thomas, there are a lot of people that can't afford to gamble that can't afford to drive to Tunica either. Why give them gambling down the street where it would be easy for them to walk there? I'm glad you can afford to drive to tunica and waste some of your money, a lot of us can't.

What people need to understand is that the schools don't get the gambling money IN ADDITION TO all of the money the State has been earmarking for schools. The State starts allocating traditional budget money for items OTHER than the schools, and then the schools are dependent for survival on Bubba making a dumb bet.

Parents who allow their children to go without food have much bigger problems than gambling...I'm going with they were unfit parents to begin with. Saying as much is an old and ineffective argument. If it's not gambling they're spending money on, it'll be alcohol or even video games. So that's just a matter of priorities.

And gambling is no different than putting your money in the stock market or, as an earlier poster pointed out, a 401(k). You're taking a chance on a return.

Historically, the return has been good in the stock market, but many, many people close to retirement lost every penny they had depended on due to some bad decisions by a few greedy people in the last couple of years. These aren't people who put all their eggs in one basket, either; it impacted almost every share of every public company.

That's not to say that investing is a bad idea because of it, it's just to demonstrate that it's all a game of chance.
While I understand trying to compare going to the casino and gambling to a 401K invested in stocks, it is very different.

When you purchase stock, you 'own' part of a company. That company's value may increase (yay) or decrease (boo), but you still own a certain percentage of that company.

When you gamble, you are playing a game of chance - and you own nothing but a 'chance'. A chance a game in which the odds are stacked (sometimes astronomically) against you.

If you wish to argue for gambling, that's fine. But it is not, and has never been, like 'playing' the stock market.

Yes it is. The value of stock quite often decreases. For instance, I work for a company whose stock has no less than tanked in the last three years. I put money in and lost that money. Same thing as gambling.

Out of curiosity, JOY, how is it possibly anyone else's business what I do with my hard earned cash? How will what I do with my cash impact my neighbor?
JOY

you do not own part of that company....you have interest in that company....not the same thing.

and why do you think they call it playing the stock market. you are taking a risk, you know nothing about the people that work for the company all you are looking at are numbers that some broker has normally told you about.

I wish they would just do full casino's in alabama and get rid of the bingo aspect of it all.

No, it is not the same. You own something when you own stock. As I noted in my post explaining this the first time, the value of what you own may increase or decrease. But you still own a given percentage of that company. You saying it is the same doesn't make it so.

Unless your company has bankrupted, while the value of the stock you own in it may be much less, it still has some value. That value could increase.

.

If you are investing in company's without doing due diligence and research, then you are 'playing' with your money. But that doesn't make the stock market "gambling" in the since that playing the lottery or playing craps is gambling.

Butter, Gambling is currently illegal in this state - as are a number of other things that you could spend your money on. If it comes up for a vote and passes, great. It'll be legal and it'll anyone's right to gamble as they wish. However, I have the right to express my opinion and vote that way - regardless of what I base my opinion "on".

I've worked in the business world over fifteen years and know what I'm talking about. It's still a chance you are taking. And due diligence and research don't mean squat when you're dealing with people who are willing to invest your cash in risky things like ARM loans. Many, many banks duped investors into thinking this was safe.

Look back one post. I was addressing it...

...I really didn't get the feeling you'd be okay with legalizing it. So, you're saying you would be okay with it if a law got passed and all of this is just a matter of it being illegal with you?

If it comes up for a vote, I'll vote against it, but I won't lose any sleep over it. I just hope they don't build any of those rundown ugly bingo halls (like are on 78 in Jasper) close to my house.
To all the folks who believe gambling is the same as investing in the stock market, how many of you have your retirement tied up in lotto tickets?

It's just silly to think that way.

If you think the government has too much power now, wait till they get their hands on all that tax money from casinos. Then after the government grows by a few thousand employees and its appetite outgrows what the casinos bring in, they can increase our property taxes again and the cycle starts all over again.

Since I agree with 3 of you, I'm quoting in one post. Big Grin
The religious fanatics in Franklin County are gearing up to try & stop that county from going wet when the vote comes up. Those in every county in Alabama will do the same thing to stop gambling from coming to Alabama. They think it's a sin. There's not one scripture in the Bible that uses the words "gambling is a sin". I've never seen a scripture that says it's "a sin to drink". Jesus himself turned water into wine.

lawguy07, I hope you weren't being sarcastic because I agree with you. Wink

I, too, go to Tunica because it's alot of fun, & I enjoy it. I have a free hotel room, & free food. I have the money to blow, & it's no one's business but mine. Those that blow money, no matter if it be Tunica, a new car, vacations, etc., if they don't have it to blow, it's their problem, not mine.

If it has to be the religious fanatics that want to stop it then it has to be the gambling fanatics that want it legal. This is of course based on your logic.

If it gives you a warm and fuzzy to blame one group as the only opposers of gambling, then have at it. You're wrong, though.
First, I love it when it's called "Anti-Gambling". It's not "ANTI" anything because it's already against the law...it's just a Gambling Rally or Gambling Task Force. You don't have to be anti when you're on the side that made it or enforces it as illegal when it already is illegal. Maybe label it Pro-Gamer and Pro-Cautious...lol.

Second, right now it's the law and it's illegal so the law needs to be obeyed.

Third, if they're (casino owners) breaking the law now and aren't paying taxes when it's illegal, how can we (or can we) trust them to obey the law and pay the taxes when/if it is legal? They make more money now.

Fourth, I agree with "lawguy07". Put a whole strip in downtown Florence and some boats down at McFarland.

Fifth, it needs to go to vote of course and I'd vote for Gaming...not silly bingo crap...ALL OUT GAMING.
