Get you some Demon at the co-op and it'll get the regular ants. It's the best bug killer you can get, even what the "pros" use.
Now the fire-ants are a different story- most time when you get them with the counter stuff they just move. The best thing you can do is take something sharp or a pole and drive it deep. Pour a little gas and light it. I removed about 5 mounds that only were nomads around my yard last year and had tried borax, boiling water,...etc. remedies.

I found a mound in my backyard yesterday- took a crowbar and stabbed the soft mound deep a few times-don't hold the bar in one place too long . Then take a small cup of gas and gave the party a bath. let is soak in for a while and that alone will probably get to the queen and kill her. If the next day you see them still working, step back throw a match in. It'll burn for a while but it will get them. I raked and poked the hole while it burned to make sure I covered every bit.
Be sure to keep the kids and pets away from this.

If you'da read all my posts, you would have seen that when I used Demon on the outside it only moved them. On the inside is where it works. The gas treatment works on the outside, as it worked for me again 2 days ago. I it had not, they would have been in another part of the yard.

We poured corn meal on the mound, they eat it and it rises the ants swell and die. There were more mounds later in different areas of the yard,so I am not sure if these moved like is typical or not.
I tried this also, but it didn't kill the queen so she packs them up and moves them to a new spot. The county ext agent said to pour boiling water on them after dark when all/most were in the nest and it would get them- didn't work. I saw this in the paper and tried for several nights and no success. Only thing that worked for me is low cost regular petro. If you find something else, let me know!
Several years ago, I purchased a black one gallon jug of fire ant killer, made by Texaco. The jug contained small crystals, and included the instructions to pour a complete, unbroken circle around the fire ant hill, then sprinkle a few crystals on top of the mound. Almost immediately, the workers come to the top and take one or more crystals to the queen. When she dies, they look to go else where and start over but the circle around the ant hill stops them. I don't know if this product is still on the market today but I think I found it at K Mart or Wal Mart garden center.

I am told on good authority that the armadillo, aka, hard shelled possum, is the North American ant eater and that they love a good buffet of fire ants. Try not to run over so many of those ugly little rascals and let's see if they can catch up on their work.

It used to be rare to see an armadillo in North Alabama. I was told that the armadillo followed the fire ants to this region.
