Can anyonerecommend a decent, honest roofer in the Shoals area who will not be rude on the phone, will show up at the appointed time, even show up at all, not condescend to you just because you are a woman, and will tell you the exact problem, assess what precisely needs to be done, and will actually fix the leak where you don't have to cringe every time it sprinkles?

Does such a business exist?

I'm tired of being screwed.  My new ceiling is leaking and I can't get anyone to show up much less fix it.  Who is trustworthy?

Sure there are some Honest one's left. However I recommend you talking to your neighbors or find someone that has had a Roof installed in the past year and see how they feel about the kind of service they recieved. You can also check out any Roofing company at BBB.ORG free of charge.  Smaller Roofing companies are where you get your best service. The larger ones tend to subcontract out their work and you never know what or who your getting.

I have twice used Aday Roofing, I think they are now C & D roofing, on 2 different houses in the past year.  They were prompt, got the job done in an amazingly short time, and I am totally satisfied with their work.  I am a woman, and never felt that they were being condescending or rude.  I initially found their number in the little ad paper we get in the mail every week.

Unfortunaely, I used one of the smaller, family owned business and have had nothing but trouble in the past year.

That is uncommon, especially for a Family owned Business. Usually the one's that employe family members are the one's you can usually trust to do what you have contracted them to do. However no one is perfect. I suppose anyone can have problems with any type of work performed. When they refuse to return to fix the problem is when it turns into a bad deal.

Not one to throw water on your fire but BEWARE of any b/s you get from BBB. I have had several bad experiences with their so-called recommendations. Pick a roofer that friends or neighbors have dealt with. JGRAS in Tuscumbia is very good. Have heard good things about several others as well. Johnny Grisham put the roof on my house 8 years ago and was very satisfied.

The BBB is all some people have. Usually they do not recommend any type of contractor. Their site is there so you can see the business's rating according to work they have performed in the past. Most homeowners will complain if they feel like they did not get the quality they paid for and the BBB is usually the first place they will call. So it's like a network of information of contractors. Most of the time it's a judgemental call for the homeowner. If you have done your homework and you know what your wanting done, then it shouldn't be hard to tell if your contractor knows what he/she is talking about within a few minutes in a conversation. As far as this JGRAS company....I am aware of Johnny Grissom. A subcontractor as well. And for future reference, not wanting to throw water on your fire either the name of his business is not JGRAS, It's JAGRIS. Stands for Johnny A Grissom.  Let's just say I have had my run in's with this one too.

I once had to have some minor roof repairs done to my house in Atlanta.  I found hispanic roofing companies doing virtually all (100%) residential roofing.  They bid the job cheaper than a legitimate roofing company just pays for workmans comp insurance.  They were uninsured, undocumented and part of the "underground economy" ignored by our government--paying no taxes.

It's just one of those heavy, hot, dirty businesses.  I'm surprised that any person is willing to haul 100 lb. bundles of roofing up a ladder on a 150 degree Summer day. It's not a profession that anyone can work in until they're of retirement age--bodies just don't hold up that long.

The good roofers stick to commercial work--where the big $ is.

You will get good and bad with any of them.  Gann's did my grandmother's house,  Charged more than I thought it should have been but I couldn't talk her out of it.  She got a metal roof.  3 months later, all the paint had washed off and it was blue instead of red.  I have used C&D(was Aday) and as stated above, did great service.  He even replaced rotted decking on my roof and didn't charge any more than first estimate.  Several people I know have used him and have had great service.

Sure they are cheaper than most. It's simple math. Use Hispanics and help is cheap. Bet he doesn't have the same crew he did last September.

Ganns did try to talk me into a metal roof, I simply insisted on shingle and that is what I got! As for the hispanic reference, They showed up here at 7:00Am and did not stop until 5:00PM when they finished cleaning up the place.

Just an update as the OP -

After a recommendation from a co-worker and the nice big ad in the yellow pages promising everything but the kitchen sink, I called a particular roofing company around 9 am.  First of all, it sounded like I got someone out of bed.  Then he said he would call me back in 20 minutes.

He called back at 4:09pm.   Uh....no...

Well. Since you have called about eveyone else and you have not gotten the proper service you feel you deserved, then why not call one or two that has been recommended to you on here. I have done a little research myself and found Simmons Roofing has a pretty nice facebook page to where you can contact them there or I do believe there is a contact number as well. Also call Mr Gann. and then come back and give us the feedback we all would like to hear. I think we all may be surprised. Doesn't hurt. Wouldn;t cost anything. Them come back and report. I believe you will fine out the nice yellow page ad has alot of show in it.....you can haul as many watermelons with a pickup and you can a semi. Just have to make a few more loads. Showboating in the yellow pages has nothing to do with the quality of work performed.

While there are a few good people in the roofing business, the best ones like Gann are so busy they can't get to all those who wish their service. And Mr. Gann has seen in this area a "Quality " metal roof is a much better value, he tries to use this material whenever the customer wishes it. He has informed me due to the superior thickness he uses he has never had to replace one due to hail damage. There's homes in the Florence Historic District that have metal roofs that are over 100 yrs.old and just get a coat of paint every 10-15 yrs or so, just drive to the end of North Court street and look to the East for the evidence.

But a great roofer will have more business than they can get to now days.......Your investment maybe worth your wait.....

How do you know the one I called was not one recommended on here?   Let's just say it wasn't Simmons, so I will take your recommendation and call them.

I do not know if you have called anyone that has been recommended to you on this particular post. However you have called one Roofing company that failed to show up at the desired time and you were quick to react with a complaint to us. So I am just guessing that if you had called one of the one's recommended on here and either had recieved good or bad service you would have told us by now. Just my opinion.

People are indeed fabulous, aren't they?  They will exaggerate and make up situations in order to create and manufacture unnecessary controversy.  Please list the 27 reasons I gave to not take the advice given.  Also, please let me know with whom I argued.   NoMan and several others recommended Simmons.  How do you know I haven't taken their advice?

Chill out, PD.
