I hope everyone read the article about Haylee Cain today. I think the couple that are caring for her are nothing short of angelic. We could all learn from these people. If anyone knows this family and they need help with anything, would someone please post it on here so I can volunteer to help them?

I wanted to comment on the previous article, I think by Trevor Stokes. He stated Haley was in a room with an older woman who had no decorations on the wall. This is really sadder than Haley's plight. I would assume this woman had lived a normal life for many years and had contributed much to society. Stokes made her sound like a throw-away.

We need more people to care for those like Haley who can't contribute, but let's not put them before those who already have.
The first article only says "With her parents out of the picture...". I want to know the same thing tcf does. Also, todays TD article says "Couple adopt woman after reading her story in paper" " and it should say "Couple TO adopt woman after reading her story in paper". The article says they are PLANNING to adopt her. I wish these reporters would show a little more professionalism. DETAILS COUNT. They need to be factual. It's not just this. There have been a lot of flubs lately. What gives? Is there no proofreader?

i am haylee's sister. i live in texas where haylee lived for the past few years before wanting to move back with our grandfather...alot of both of these stories are untrue...there have been numerous people that have taken haylee in and then haylee decides that she doesnt wanna live with them anymore...haylee was also not "living" in the nursing home. she had about 6 surgeries since this past january and was staying in the nursing home for rehab since there was no live in rehab facilities that would take her...she was not living there for forever it was only supposed to be for 6 weeks not forever. also our parents do not have haylee because for the most part haylee doesnt wanna live with them. she is an adult and has a fully normal mind and decides where she wants to be and its not with either one of them. i am very happy that she is living with donna and judson now they are both wonderful people.and i think she will be happy.just wanted to clear a few things up!! thanks

I'm a long-time Medicaid reform activist from Mobile, Alabama (I was raised and lived there all my life).

Most everyone who's reading this has no idea how horrible and useless Alabama Medicaid is.

The article points out that Haylee could get the support she needs from the state if only she had an IQ under 70 and qualified for the MR/DD program. First off, Haylee's IQ is well over that, this is a girl who's already graduated high school. Secondly, even those who have cerebral palsy and are profoundly MR, don't qualify. In Mobile, I was working to help a guy with CP, Rusty, and even though he's severely MR and can't talk, we still couldn't get the state to accept him into the MR/DD waiver after he was cut off and left to drift at age 21. Why? Because "MR isn't his primary diagnosis, CP is," they said.

Alabama would never pay for a caregiver for famous Alabamian Helen Keller (from Tuscumbia, where Haylee lives now, ironically) because she wouldn't meet that IQ limit. Alabama was glad to put Helen Keller on their state quarter, but would never have PAID a quarter to secure her a decent quality of life at home, and had Keller's parents not been rich, she would have died in squalor and obscurity, her legendary talents untapped.

In Alabama, once you're an adult and your aging parents can no longer care for you 24/7, your only option (unless you like death in a nursing home) is to find a new family! I'm glad Haylee did.

I'm dependent on a ventilator and total care. When faced with parents that couldn't take care of me anymore, I flew out of Mobile Regional Airport and moved to New York City.

Alabama has no clue how terrible and inhumane their (lack of) services are for us with disabilities, and over the years, I've become convinced they don't care about Medicaid and WILL NEVER CHANGE!

Nick
