I had U-Verse and I thought it beat Cable and Satellite as for quality and services offered.  I liked it very well but had to give it up.  If you have a Ham Radio Operator or CB'er close to your house and they transmit then it could effect your U-Verse service.

I'm a Ham Radio Operator and every time I would key down my Radio equipment then both Internet and Television would shut down.  The problem is with the U-Verse modem and it's shielding or lack of it.   Most likely you will not have a problem in this area but if, for no reason, you start having your modem reset, TV Signal freeze and then go out, and internet shut down then it's possible you live near some source of RF energy transmission source.  Even an AM Radio Station's transmitting equipment can effect it.  I doubt you will have those problems and I think you will like U-Verse better, I know I did as long as I could use it.

If you are a big fan of "free" pay per view, and you are coming from Comcast, you will not like it. The free offerings are pretty small. Pay per view movies are excellent. The remote control stinks - too many buttons. The internet speed is great and high def picture quality is great.  Overall I am pleased. I've had it for about 6 months.

I came from being a long time customer of DirecTV for TV, ATT for internet and phone. In all, I'm saving about $50.00 per month compared to what Iw as paying before. I will be taking a close look at Comcast when my contract runs out.

Hi Willie,

My daughter in Corona, CA, has had it for about two years and it works great.  When it was first installed, it came with Mickey Mouse wireless adapters named 2-Wire -- and they really sucked.  I talked with U-Verse Tech Support and they sent us, free, a set of adapters (one for the router and one for each desktop) which plugs into the 115 vac outlet (but cannot be plugged into a surge suppressor, must be plugged directly into the 115 vac outlet) and uses house electrical wiring as the transmission line.  It works great.

She now has a desktop computer and two laptops, as well as her television and all the associated gadgets, working off the U-Verse Router -- and sometimes I take my laptop there.  This is a two story home with the router downstairs, the desktop upstairs, and the laptops wherever.   And, they all work fine.  No complaints at all.

God bless, have a wonderful, blessed day,

Bill

Hi Willie,

Not sure where you live, but, U-Verse is via fiber optic cable technology and is not available in all areas.  According to the chat I just had with an AT&T rep:

AT&T U-verse Residential service is 100% digital television delivered over an Internet Protocol (IP) platform using fiber optic technology. AT&T U-verse also offers High Speed Internet and Voice (in limited areas) over IP access into your home.

My daughter has U-Verse and on the router she has her TV, DVD player, etc. -- and via the router we have a desktop computer direct wired via a house wiring adapter and several laptops operating via wireless connection.  It works great.

In some areas of the Shoals area, the service is not yet available.  I checked my brother's address in Florence and it showed that the service is not available there.  Obviously, where you live the service is available -- for you are having it installed.   I am sure you will be happy with it.

God bless, have a wonderful, blessed day,

Bill

there were some outside line issues... it's gonna take a couple more days to set up... when the outside work is done... inside, they put a "residential access point"... everything comes through that... they have a "wireless" receiver , all you do is plug it into the wall and the tv... and you're ready... no input cable is required!

As Bill Gray said, it's a form of ADSL.  Essentially it's a 35-40 megabit connection partitioned out for video and internet traffic.  By fiber, in this area, they mean Fiber to the Node (To the big refrigerator like boxes that are typically somewhere in the neighborhoods where they offer it)  a more detailed link on it is here  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AT%26T_U-verse

Unlike the Comcast commercials like to imply, more TVs on in the house does not slow down internet service, although there is a 4 standard definition streams at once limit.  Depending on various conditions the HD limit can be 4, or as little as 1. (most of the time 2-3 is possible)  This will likely improve with time as technology improves.

As far as satellite, AT&T does offer deals with DirectTV, but it's just a business agreement they have with each other, U-Verse is AT&T's own baby.   They did have a similar agreement with Dish Network a few years ago but switched.  If the rumor is true that AT&T may try to buy Dish for their cellular licenses it's going to be interesting.

What was disappointing to me was how RF energy/transmissions, given the digital nature of U-Verse, effected the modem equipment.  One of Fiber Optic's bonuses is that it is not susceptible to RF Energy and interference such as static and magnetic fields being induced.  The problem and weakness with U-Verse is that the modem itself is not immune to interference from HF (1 Mhz - 30 Mhz) signals/transmissions.

If you have, or consider getting U-Verse, and live near/adjacent to either a CB operator with any power or amplifying antenna, Ham Operator, or AM Transmission tower, then you might well have your television and internet effected.  Usually what happens is that the TV Signal/Picture just freezes in place, audio stops/mutes and internet stops functioning.  At times this resets and comes back but quite often, at least in my case, the U-Verse modem required rebooting.   Although I liked U-Verse better I had to return to Cable, which was not effected, by my hobby.  It was that or give up my Hobby and all my investment in it.  Although I liked U-Verse better I did not like it that much better.  For most though those problems will not happen.  If though your U-Verse happens to go out without any notice and for no known reason then you might question and investigate if you have either a CB or Ham (Amateur) Radio operator living nearby (often you'll see the transmitting antenna and/or tower) or some AM Radio Transmission facility nearby.

The AT&T Technician and myself tried everything, including grounding of anything and everything but nothing helped deter the susceptibility of the U-Verse modem to RF Energy.

I would LOVE to have uverse for my internet service. Trouble is , they won't put it in my house without me getting their damm tv service, and I'm happy with what I have, and have no intentions of changing.

I have a woman renting a house from me in another city, and she has the Uverse and no TV, so I know it is possible and ATT is lieing about not being able to do it.

Unfortunately there's nothing like that available where we live. We do have sateliite tv though but the only internet available is dial up, Hughesnet(not gonna bother) and usb connect from AT&T. 5GB a month for $61.20. We're stuck with it at the moment but It doesn't seem fair when people in the city can get DSL for $14.95 a month. What's really frustrating is that there is DSL just 2 miles up the road on either side of us. Until they put a cell tower up the road from us 6 years ago there wasn't even any cell phone reception at our house for years unless you went and stood out in the yard.

Willie, I'm wondering what your experience of U-verse has been?  Or anyone else on this original post?
We are retiring to the Shoals in the Spring and this is of course one of many changes that we will have to make: internet provider, phone, TV service.
I would really appreciate any feedback from the Shoals area members.
Thanks!

Uverse just plain s-ucks.  My relatives have it and 6 out of 7 nights the television signal shuts down at 8:00 PM and requires you to select "OK" on the remote to resume programing.  Sometimes it requires a reboot of the system.  After many many hours on the phone with their "customer service" and no solutions they have just decided to live with it.  It's the only way that they can get high speed internet at a reasonable cost so they tolerate the annoyances.

I do hate to hear about your relatives experience but we have had U-Verse for 3/4 year now and NEVER, not once had an outage.  We could never say that about our luck with Comcast which left us in the dry several times, as far as Internet is concerned.  There was many times that our internet went out but TV Remained.   We enjoy U-Verse's features and system so much better that I doubt we would return to Cable and surely not to DISH again, at least something grand would have to happen to lure us away from U-Verse.  We're recording far more shows, the signal is about the same quality only we definitely see a greater difference between digital TV of Comcast and Digital through U-Verse and the interactive features that Comcast doesn't have are really nice.

Fault me!   Just to be fair and honest I was very truthful in saying I never had an outage with AT&T up and until I bragged about not having an outage and then yesterday a HUGE Outage that effected much of the country, at least from what I understand.  AT&T had a major outage yesterday so here there was none until I bragged about not having one.

Does anyone remember FloWeb?  That idea by our location Utility about actually providing internet service to the city?    They put the wrong people in charge apparently.  People without knowledge or vision because I spoke with a person in Chattanooga and their Electric Power Board (Electric Utility) provides, via Fiber Optic, HIgh Speed Internet Service for around $50/month or bundled packages up to $90.00 a month that supplies Internet at a speed of up to 56 Meg both directions (up/down).  That compares to the highest Comcast offering of around 12 or 16 up and 3 Meg down.

The person I spoke with that had intimate knowledge of it because he worked with the Utility that accomplished it said that Chattanooga has seen bountiful economic Growth account of supplying such blazing fast Internet service over such a wide area and that many data companies have relocated to Chattanooga solely account of the High Speed Internet offering that they have.  Floweb was a good idea but the apparently we don't have the people we need to implement it or enough people in the right places to do so.  Sounds like if Chattanooga benefited economically by drawing in business account of it that there is no reason why an area like Florence couldn't benefit some.  Of course yes Chattanooga has two interstates running through the town and an airport serving the city that's fairly large but with Rail and the River Florence also has some potential that they are apparently not tapping into.  Sorry I deviate.

Yes, gbrk, I rmemember the Floweb debacle and its perpetrator, the former head of the gas department who pawned himself off as a techie genius of some kind and conned the city into letting him have a second paid job as administrator of what should have been re-named "Flopweb."  That same luminary was later arrested for impersonating a police officer.  I don't know how that turned out.  Maybe someone else does.  Blesseldy, the varmint did not last long in office after his numerous foul-ups.

When I lived in Scottosboro, the utility department installed their own internet service and television service.  It was through fiber optics.  I had 300 channels and unlimited internet service that was fast.  $50 a month for both.  Charter came in trying to steal customers away offering big deals and great service.  Which they couldn't and never did provide.  But Charter didn't care once they got people locked into a contract.
