Sorry, wasn't there, so I can't help you with that. I have two airsoft guns...both have the orange tip. From more than 10 feet away, the tip is not nearly as obvious as the fact that the device appears to be a H&K MP-5 or a Beretta M-92. I don't display them in public settings.

BTW, most cities discharging firearms ordinances also cover BB and airsoft guns.

Can say I almost shot a 14 year old over a pellet pistol one time. He was carrying it tucked under his shirt, and showing it to intimidate some other kids. It had an orange tip..inside his pants.
Funny. My brother and I, and some friends, ride 4 wheelers all over the place out in the county and shoot each other with airsoft guns all the time. As stupid or silly as that sounds we know better than to do this inside a city limit. You just can't "play" in the cities anymore.

Just FYI, don't try to launch one of those model rockets that go about 400 to 500 yards up in the air and then break off into a parachute anywhere near a city either...not unless you want SWAT and NASA flashbanging your door...lol.
Due to hyper awareness of guns and youth problems we face today it's probably not a good idea for kids to play with toy guns in public places like we did when we were kids. Once the officers determined that toy guns were involved they should have appologized for interfering and explained why that kind of play can be dangerous in a public place.

Sounds like a couple of stupid cops. These guns are sold at most outdoor events, founders day ect.

The kids run around shooting them.

If a cop can't tell the difference between a CLEAR PLASTIC TOY gun from a real gun then they are in the wrong line of work.

If I were the parent of those children I would be visiting these cops.
.....Oh me, any one reading your screen name knows..... Razzer
On reading this a second time I see no indication that this is anything other than a tale told by a couple of youngsters. It would be nice to know whether the police contacted any of the parents. This very well could be something that the kids made up. Would there be a police report or dispatcher's log to reflect an actual event? It seems if back-up were called there would be some kind of record.
