Ok strange you ask this today,, I Have a Ham on my Smoker Grill right now!! a half Shank portion about 10 lbs. , Ok I never though of much of defferance in Band Names Hams, but I tend to think none are better than , the Smithfield hames.. I have tryed the Crookes Brand and Smithfields, and cooked em both the same. I truely beleave Smithfields will be the ones I buy from now on. you may not have a smoker grill , if so.. I only use real Charcoal and Hickory or Apple wood, never no gas grill for me. To start with I smoke the Ham for about 2&1/2 to 3 hours on 275 no more than 300 indirect heat, after smoking it for this time, place in pan with a little water added and wrap with foil. cook or steam for another hour or 2 . The ones I have smoked are so jucie and tender.
Mom allways did her Ham in the Oven on about 275 to 300 , in a baking pan and after a couple hours, then putting a cover over the baking pan for another hour or two. lol they was never any Ham Left at Thanksgiving or Xmas.
Go to the Smithfield Website. No matter what kind of ham you have do what the website says! They make their living making sure you end up with a good ham!
Don't get me wrong, I have done some pretty good hams in my ham cooking time. I have used "coke" or "sprite" with good results. But I long for a true and tried way that the ham will be juicy and full of all the taste of everything I put with it. I may try nothing but apples and brown sugar. How does that sound.
I buy Cook's Butt ham at Piggly Wiggly - then I have a big roasting pan with a lid that I use to cook the ham in. I put the ham in the roaster and turn my oven to 200 degrees - I usually put the ham on about 10pm and it is done when I get up about 6:30 or 7:00 am. My family absolutely loves this ham. I shred my ham instead of trying to slice it.
I found a great Crock Pot ham recipe. You put the ham in and rub the sides with 1 cup brown sugar, then pour a 1/2 cup maple syrup over the top. Pour a can of pineapples over it, cover with lid and cook on high for 6-8 hours.
Only, my husband does venison roasts this way. I bought a 'utility' ham for Christmas snacking. Since it is not a Smithfield and they won't know it, I am going to try your way - also releases the oven! I slice mine with the electric knife!
Y'all must be talking about a quick cured ham, because if it is a country cured ham, you need to put it in water and keep it just below a boil for about 5 or 6 hours. EM, If you want some utility ham for "snacking" , just go to Walmart Deli and get some "Old Farmer's Ham" sliced thin. It is great to not be country ham, actually has some taste.
themax, apples & brown sugar sounds great. Throw in a little apple cider or juice for moisture. Try those oven bags to keep it juicy. Those things are great. It cooks a lot faster, though so check the times in the instructions.
Seeweed, EM cooks from scratch! Seven pounds of ham for under $10 - bone for beans and soup. I will keep your suggestion in case I am up the creek! Thanks! It is easier to cook a ham than to go to Walmart! LOL!
We smoked a ham for Thanksgiving. We smoked it at about 225 and used maple wood. We also made a sauce to mop on of 1 part pineapple juice and 3 parts honey and mopped it on in the beginning and every 30 minutes during cooking. It was absolutely delicous!!!!!
