My absolute favorite place to get barbecue in the Shoals is Sparky's Drive-In on Old Lee Hwy. in Tuscumbia. It's not a sit-down place, but I'll be ****ed if their barbecue sandwich with a side of crinkle fries and a soft-serve vanilla ice cream for dessert isn't a perfect meal. Probably out of the way for many of you, but if you're on that side of the river you should try it. It's cheap too.

I like Brooks a lot too, but I have such happy childhood memories associated with Sparky's.
I thought Bunyan's re-opened pretty quickly. I don't know.

If you're ever near Jack's Creek, Tennessee, there's a pretty awesome little joint there. Also, about 10 minutes east of Jack's Creek, at the junction of 100 and 22 is another one, but I don't know the name. They're about the best I've had. I really like Bunyan's, though.

I grew up in Jack's Creek (1973-1982). I think you're talking about 'Crowe's BBQ'. The current BBQ isn't what it was 20+ years ago. Now, the best PULLED BBQ in W. TN is in Selmer, at a place called Pappy John's on HWY 45S.

All of the places listed in this thread so far are just so-so Q joints. IMHO, about the best in the shoals area right now is Mullins on Wilson Dam Road. If you go by and the open sign is lit, then stop and try it out. The next best place I've found is John's down in Moulton. Both places actually use some hickory in their smokers cooking the bbq. If you want to know how good the bbq is going to be, drive or walk around the back of the q-joint and see what kind of a wood pile they have.
My opinion of several of the well know places around the shoals is very low so I'll keep those to myself. However, if anyone should care to know that can PM me and I'll tell it like it is.

Haven't heard from you for a while !
Glad you are back.

Folks, Pitbo$$ should know. As I remember it, he was brought up on BBQ from Bozo's and all the really good places in the Memphis area.
Made a followup trip to Miss Annies tonight, or last night, and can confirm that the quality and taste were just as good as our first impression. I ask the server about the bbq sauce and if they purchased it or made it in house. He said they made it in house. The sauce reminds me a lot of the old 2nd street Rib Shacks sweet sauce and the ribs continue to be cooked perfectly and have a very sweet flavor. I'd love to see them venture out and try a dry rub sometime.

The most frequent complaint that I hear about them is the price. Some say that for the location and being out as far as they are (one mile north of the Tennessee line, on the right) their prices are on the high side. I might agree with that statement however I do feel like I got what I paid for. The 2 meat combo is supposed to be $18.95 for 1/2 rack of ribs and 1/2 smoked chicken but the last two times I went they only charged $12.95 but are said to be going to change the computer price to match the menu. Still at the higher price I feel you get what you paid for as it's certainly one of, if not the, best in the Shoals area today. I'm looking forward to hearing about the BBQ Pork and their Steaks which I've heard some rave about but I just can't seem to go there without ordering the Ribs and Smoked Chicken. On another note my daughter who ordered the Pasta said that Grilled Chicken that comes on the pasta was extremely good but said even though the pasta was good it wasn't her favorite pasta however the Grilled Chicken was extremely good.
Without question...Jim 'n Nick's.

At one point in my life I wanted to open a barbecue place and the first time I visited this establishment, it was like they crawled into my brain and copied my blueprint. Wink
It is excellent and they are all over (B'Ham, Montgomery, Nashville). If you ever see one, it's worth stopping. They even do a great carry-out business (we had it during a “working lunch” today and it was fantastic).

Check out their menu...

If you'd like the option of being able to make a good bbq sandwich at home whenever you get a taste for it, without having to go out, pick up some of L. O. Bishop's bbq at your grocery store or WalMart. It is vacuum packaged, so you can stash it in the fridge for unexpected company or for whenever the mood strikes you. A package that costs somewhere around $5-6 will make four sandwiches the size of Bunyan's large, and it's delicious.
