David, get the Hebrew National hotdogs at Walmart and make your own. I know this has been throughly discussed before! LOL! Look for the beef ones that have the Kosher seal on package. I assure you a Rabbi was watching! The dietary rules are very strict and adhered to! There are fresh ones at Walmart now. (MS) They are also on special. I watched the same program you did!
From the supermarket I prefer, and usually buy, Hebrew National, has to do with taste and quality, not religion. I hated the Nathan's that I purchased in the supermarket and brought home but I know that Sam's Club uses Nathans in their hot dogs which I consider some of the best I have had (out). Hey I know that's strange and I don't try and reconcile it but just accept it.

No matter that brand though, when at the supermarket, my wife always insist upon the purchase of "Beef" hotdogs Eating out we don't have those choices.
My friend who used to live in Hell's Kitchen and now loves living in the Shoals says that the Nathan's hotdogs we eat at home will never taste like the ones from Coney island because we wash our cooking equipment. LOL! I do not buy Hebrew National for religious reasons but because I do know many Jewish people observe the dietary laws down to a fine point and there will be no scraps in the H N's. ( and definitely no little bits of bone) These people will not even eat gelatin which we eat because it is made from animal hooves. This seems strange to us, but there are some aspects of Christianiy that maybe we should take more seriously - completely unrelated to food! No, I am not related to our Bill Gray! ( Another interesting fact, many both Christian and atheists in NYC are buying Kosher chickens at the Kosher Market for health reasons.) The OT God did know his business!
Smiler not trying to be an expert but i will give my opinion on your question of hot dogs. Having lived in northern Il fo 45 years, i have to say that (the chicago hot dog); is the best. I t does have to be Vienna brand hot dogs and use poppy seed buns with all the trimmings in cluding celery salt. Mug. Com serves a pretty close to original chicago dog. Having said that; i will add that Sparky's slaw dogs are hard to beat. I guess my ansewer as to the best would be: if you ain't a true southerner, you might like chicago dog but for a taste of the true south, Sparky's would win hands down.
The National Hebrew Dog is by far one of the better Beef dog's you will purchase. You will find it has a snap when you bite into it,juicy and does not have a real salty taste as some dogs do.
It is not greasy like the Nathan Dog...Vienna Dog is good, but National Hebrew in a national contest beat Nathans and Vienna...

There are many ways to cook a hot dog...simmered, boiled, steamed, grilled (flat or chargrilled,Deep Fried, hotdog grill with rollers, etc...but the best according to national tasting scores the one perfered method over all was the Chargrill...Folks like the slight char taste with the crunch of the crisp outer skin.
The best Hotdog Bun is the Potato Bun due to its mellow, soft taste that says,"Hey! without me you are only getting half of the enjoyment"

You can order the Nathan's hot dogs online with the natural casing, they are much better than the skinless Nathan's dogs you get at Wal-Mart or Foodland. You can also order Sabrett hot dogs online but can't buy them in any stores around here but can get one at the Huntsville Star's games.
Anyway, in my opinion these two brands can't be beat.
I purchased Nathan's Hotdogs in the grocery store and absolutely hated them. They were among the worst I had tasted. I always try and buy Hebrew National when I purchase in the Store as they can't be beat (in my opinion).

Now the exception .. at least to Nathan's. When at Sam's Club I, from time to time, choose to purchase their Hot Dog special which is made with Nathan's Hotdogs. Thing is that these Nathan's are different from those we purchased in the grocery store and were MUCH better. It wasn't even a contest as to how they tasted. The Sam's deli Hot Dog is a great deal and taste very good.

As for cooking methods, trader seems to have covered most of them. Like the many ways you can cook shrimp, from the Forrest Gump movie, there seems an endless list of ways to prepare Hot Dogs. I too favor a chargrilled dog but I also enjoy a Hot Dog that is slow cooked on the dedicated Hot Dog cookers (rollers that roll the hot dog as they cook it) and then placed on a bun and "steamed" in a steamer.

Too bad Dairy Queen seems to have vacated the area because I have heard that they have a pretty good dog also but guess I'll have to take folks word on that.
If you want to try Nathan's the best place to get one is Sam's Deli that's inside of Sam's Club. Bear in mind though that the Nathan's dogs that you get at Sam's Deli is not the same ones that you buy in the supermarkets. They are larger/longer and more like commercially sold to vendors and the price is beyond reasonable. Large drink and dog for around $2.50 if I remember correctly. As for Hebrew National you will find those sold at Five Guy's when they open but look to pay a premium for it. Five Guy's charges around $3.99 for the plain ole Hot Dog but it is Hebrew National.

Glad to hear about Trowbridges as I have thought often about trying one there and now I have another good reason to (the great report).
Tried the Nathan's at Sam's Deli and it's pretty good, for home I buy Nathan's for boiled, steamed, or fried hot dogs and use the Sam's Beef hot dogs for the grill. I don't like the little pink wieners that some people seem to think are the best. Had several Sabrett hot dogs both from the street vendors and at homes in NY and some at the ballpark and they are also good. Orange Julius was just sort of mediocre and not bad, same with Sonic. I love hot dogs and have eaten about every type imaginable. Most hot dogs are good but some are better than others and the Chicago Dog at Mug.com was absolute perfection, it was the best hot dog ever.

Sam's dog and drink deal is the best deal in town.  The dogs are great and they provide plenty of condiments, including kraut, which is an essential in my book!
