A rare form of tuberculosis caused by illegal, unpasteurized dairy products, including the popular queso fresco cheese, is rising among Hispanic immigrants in the USA.

Cases of the Mycobacterium bovis strain of TB have increased in San Diego county, particularly among children who drink or eat dairy foods made from the milk of infected cattle, a study in the journal Emerging Infectious Diseases shows.

The germ can infect anyone who eats contaminated fresh cheeses sold by street vendors, smuggled across the Mexican border or produced by families who try to make a living selling so-called “bathtub cheese” made in home tubs and backyard troughs.

Don't you think a ruthless business owner that wanted a bigger profit or to help a relative or friend buy buying cheaper cheese might just have it shipped to them?

A large portion of dangerous drugs that reach this area come from Mexico via southern California and other border states. Why not bring in bathtub cheese to increase profit.

Is it worth the risk?
I don't think there is much profit from transporting home made cheese from mexico to Alabama. They can make more money with the drugs.

The cheese in question is made with milk from infected cows. The cows are in Mexico. It's highly unlikely the milk would be transported to Alabama, or the cheese, either. Not enough profit in cheese smuggling from Mexico to Alabama.
Beware of cheese dip at Mexican restaurants? Are you serious?
The logistics of transporting unpasteurized dairy products made in tubs from milk from cows in Mexico all the way to Alabama makes the likelihood of getting any bad cheese here absurd. You could go to the store, pay top dollar for premium cheese and serve it in your local restaurant and make a better profit than you would paying someone the cost of transporting the stuff that far at today's fuel prices.

Sassy , I can see it now ,,Saturday night ,,your driving down Florence Blvd ,,and you pull someone over ,,hey they got Cheddar ,,swiss and american ,,,which one will carry the life sent. ? Big Grin
But I love the cheese dip. Maybe getting a shot from the doctor before I eat it will be a dandy idea. lol Let's get real here. Chances of this happening in this area is crazy. Areas close to the border would be more believable. If they are getting food (perishable) from the border, we would have a rampant illness ALL the time. Love you that believe everything you hear. That's what keeps me laughing.
Unlikely, are you so sure? Cattle from Mexico are being smuggled into the USA just like drugs.

LAREDO, Texas - U.S. Federal agent Ken De Yonge rides the north bank of the Rio Grande River on horseback, hunting down illegal border crossers with a sharp eye, a sturdy rope and a magnifying glass.

De Yonge is not looking for illegal immigrants who swim the river dividing Mexico and the United States in search of jobs, or drug couriers who ferry marijuana across on rafts.
Instead, this modern cowboy scans the open range for Mexican livestock that are smuggled, or stray, into Texas carrying ticks infected with a deadly bovine disease.

From the mouth of the Rio Grande to the border town of Del Rio, Texas, some 65 of these special border agents, called "tick riders," are the U.S. cattle industry's first line of defense against bovine piroplasmosis, also known as cattle fever, or Texas fever.

Bad cheese or not, I dont go to local Mexican restaurants because of the illegal immigrant possibilities. I cannot support businesses that possibly are host to illegals. This also includes any Paradise store or any other store owned by anyone of Mexican, Arabic or Indian descent. If that makes me racist, then so be it....... I really dont give a crap. This is from a post long ago......
The following Florence Restaurants were closed on May 1 in support of the illegal immigrants protest:

Casa Mexicana

Fiesta Mexicana (And Muscle Shoals)

La Hacienda

La Fonda's was the only one that did NOT support them.

The owner proudly stated that their parents were legal and they did it the right way.

Roses did not close but allowed any Hispanic employee to miss work to attend the protest meetings if they wished.

So, if you have a craving for Mexican, please support La Fonda's or Rosie's

(American owned)...

Here is another item to consider.

A group from the Casa Mexicana rented the auditorium from Listerhill credit union that weekend and when they were finished, they left the American Flag on the flagpole upside down and a couple feet off the ground. This has been confirmed by a telephone conversation with Listerhill CU.

If that is the way they feel about Americans, it makes you wonder what they do to the food they serve.

NOTE: You may wish to share this with your Shoals area friends and associates.
also i am going to post this in the times-daily forum section..... here is the link to it... http://timesdaily.com/apps/pbcs.dll/news_messages?Categ...D=1296&GroupID=18516

Wow OriginalBama, that WAS a great racist rant! By the way, do you wear a hood during the evening hours?

Thanks for all the broad sweeping statements, and thanks for supporting our own stereotypes; that southerners are all billy bobs who hate anything non-white.

YOU are a dinosaur.

I just recently heard that a illegal cheese smuggling ring was busted locally. After months of investigation, Russellville Police arrested 10 immigrants with various sizes of cheese in their possession. After talking with the immigrants, it was found that a tunnel had been dug under the border where they transported different types of cheese in various sizes from Mexico to North Alabama. Most admitted that they did partake of the cheese when they got hungry but stopped when they realized they were eating their profits.

agree. illegal immigrants are just that, illegal. regardless of their nationality.

I agree. Want to come to the USA to make a better life for yourself? FINE - as long as you go through the proper immigration process. If you don't, you are a criminal, whether you are Mexican, Arabic, Indian, or a Long Horned Long Tailed Flying Purple People Eater.
You guys may think this is a funny topic but it does have a serious side to consider. In Los Angeles in 1985 a listeria outbreak from tainted Mexican soft cheese which resulted in 62 deaths and 150 illnesses.

It wasn't "bathtub" cheese but was produced in a manufacturing facility in a suburb of Los Angeles, however, the company knowingly processed untreated milk instead of pasteurizing it.

I love cheese dip as much as the next person, but I would certainly be asking the question of my local Mexican restaurant...where do you get the cheese you use in your queso dip? If they have nothing to hide, they shouldn't mind telling you. If they are purchasing from a Mexican supplier, eat at your own risk. The FDA simply can't catch everything and when it does find a problem it's usually because someone has gotten sick or died.
