Data rights are human rights. Many of us don't know what these firms are doing with the data they collect from us.  We should all demand congress and the president to protect our data rights.

IDC says that worldwide revenues for big data and business analytics will grow from $130.1 billion in 2016 to more than $203 billion in 2020, at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 11.7%. In addition to being the industry with the largest investment in big data and business analytics solutions (nearly $17 billion in 2016), banking will see the fastest spending growth.

There’s gold in them there mountains of data

And when there's gold, the industry will try to use our data against us or to manipulate us in favor of "the business needs".

That's a clear and present death but you don't die but could be a

Big Data could turn this world into a scary movie.

Message boards like this aren't excluded.  I wouldn't be surprised if there were campaign interns lurking about to see what the people are saying. This is the reality we live in now.  Do we want candidates telling us what we want to hear? Or do we want candidates that actually care about policy and democracy?

I really don't care what some of you "conservatives" think of black or brown people.  But if you turn a blind eye when ice snatches up a latino citizen because of the color of their skin, you are complicit.

I don't care how passionately you "conservatives" feel about abortion. But if a woman can't make a decision concerning her body, that makes her property of the state. And you are complicit.

I don't care how you "conservatives" feel about gay marriage. But if you feel that it somehow devalues the sanctity of marriage and you want the government to step in and validate the way you think, you are complicit.

Democracy is about human rights first and foremost.  That's why our government was set up with checks and balances.  The founding fathers knew humans were flawed.  But they never intended for "we the people" to cheerlead for any Caesar.

There's a new Netflix documentary movie called 'The Great Hack'. It does a good job explaining how much 'data' was collected by Cambridge Analytica. They can accurately predict what products you're interested in buying. Let that sink in for a minute.... They have so much data on millions and millions... tens of millions of people and as a sum, it can predict factors such as your political votes, what products you may buy, what tv shows you may watch, what general interests you may have... and can target  you with a selective ad campaign detailed to your personal data. All with a minimum of human interaction. Your personal data will be the next big 'civil rights' argument before the SCOTUS, it's just a matter of time.

Yep. Wish some of the forum members would watch it. trump tweeted about Elijah Cummings and antifa.  I log in and what do I see?  The usual suspects posting about Elijah Cummings and antifa.

There were two 'facts' given out in the movie.. one, data has now surpassed oil in value. How does one calculate that comparison? And Two, almost all of FB's revenue is generated by selling access to that data. If that data is getting sold for that kind of money, just imagine what it's really worth.
