I am intrigued that Randy Owen has lent (sold?) his name in an effort to start the gambling "domino-effect" in AL. Does anyone know, or have a good idea, if he is simply paid to do the TV spots or does he have a vested interest in this endeavor? For someone to have paid all those country music stars to appear in ads (only Owen being an AL resident, I think), there must be some money to be made off bingo.... Wink

I know that George Jones owns property in Alabama, and Randy Owens owns homes in the state.

Considering the out of state participation in the last attempt to legalize gambling, I am unconcerned about the compensation possibly paid the singers who appeared in the add.

I don't gamble, but am disinclined to tell others what to do in this regard. Lets vote.
Go to Dothan newspaper, you will find the scoop, or look at past threads on this forum:

This is all about Owens and Country Crossing and Paul Hubbert, AEA. I knew there was more to the story.---

"The two bills have been pushed by several country music entertainers, including Alabama’s Randy Owen, because they would clear up legal questions about a country music resort and gambling hall planned near Dothan."

"There is no question there is a big push this time to pass the bills. Paul Hubbert of the Alabama Education Association has already staked out a position, noting 70 percent of the 20 percent tax on the gross would go for education. The ink had barely dried on the newspapers announcing the plan on Friday before a weekend blitz of TV commercials started to advocate the passage of the bills. The commercials were so cheery that you would have thought you were voting for motherhood and apple pie."

I have a question.

This bill is tauted as eliminating illegal bingo. If it is illegal, there is already laws against it.

How is passing ANOTHER law making bingo illegal going to eliminate illegal bingo?

What we need is enforcement of current laws to eliminate illegal bingo. That falls to the Sheriffs of each county. If a county has illegal bingo, and the sheriff does not shut it down, that means in that area they ectually WANT illegal bingo.

This thing is a ruse, facts are twisted and this thing is presented as the corrupt and rotten thing that it truly is. For one, I always respected Randy Owen, but not any more. He is proven to be a liar and deciever.
Well maybe his Mom just likes to play BINGO Roll Eyes, No what got me with Randy was him saying in how this Tax Money would help his Poor Mom.. Now I am sure he has enough Money she should not have to depend on the Tax Money to help support her . It "MAY" help others if any left after going thru so many Deep Pockets. But look at what they said about Voting Colbert Co. Wet Years ago , in how it would help the Schools! I see no defference, they still have to raise money to buy supplys . I have no problem with BINGO. but maybe let the People VOTE ! Ok I got to go, so I can get to Tunica for the Buffet !! Big Grin
I can only hope and pray that the people of Alabama will see thru this commercial and vote their conscience. Think about the actual future of this state and what gambling does to destroy it. Also, think of all the musicians selling their names and faces for this project. Can't be good. Remember who they are when you buy your next CD and DON'T BUY THEIRS! I won't finance anyone's career when they are pushing to destroy our state. Go back to Nashville or Los Angeles or wherever you actually live.
I realize that this type tax would expand and possibly open the door to other gambling in the state, but I'm confused as to how this "bingo tax" is supposed to generate HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS of dollars in revenue...are there that many places that are open and generating that vast an income? Or are they just exaggerating hoping to get the door opened?
Drive down to Walker county if you want to see how popular Bingo is. Those places are covered up everyday.

I have mixed emotions about any form of gambling. Many, many more people lose money than win causing hardships for those families. It's so addictive that many people can't stop, no matter what the consequences.

In a perfect world, there would be NO legal gambling or lotteries. Since this isn't a perfect world, it's not a good idea to have our citizens losing money in everyone of our neighboring states.

Since they are going to gamble in those states, if they just HAVE TO lose their money, let them do it in Alabama. It's a lot better that way than to lose their money in Mississippi and then file for foodstamps in Alabama.

DING, DING, DING, BINGO! thank you, that is it in a nutshell, and the fact that these old washed up country stars are not levelling with the people of Alabama about this place in Dothan, Country Crossing, is downright deceitful.

The reason they are pushing for the "let the people vote" angle, instead of how laws are usually passed, is that most legislators are against it, and the majority of calls coming in to the lawmakers are also opposed to it.

I would suggest that in a perfect world, the government wouldn't have any involvement in whether people are gambling or not.

Practically all of our nation's laws were based on morality. Unfortunately, things like gambling and abortion are no longer considered immoral so if Mississippi, Florida, Georgia, and Tennessee are going to be immoral about gambling, we may as well dive in there with them if only for the economics.

For a small county, Walker is bringing in a boatload of new revenue from all the Bingo parlors. More than 300 charities have filed applications to play bingo in Walker County since 2007. To get a bingo permit, a charity must meet certain criteria, including having been in existence and owned property for five years prior to getting the permit.

A charity is allowed under law in Walker County to play bingo up to 10 hours a week. But multiple charities have combined their permits with bingo hall operators in order to play 24 hours a day, six days a week.

In Walker County bingo is the first or second greatest stream of tax revenue to the county government, where over $3 million is collected annually.
