They aren't cost effective.

The 25gb discs still run about 5 dollars a disc. Let's say the average size drive today is 300gb. So you'll spend $60 on discs. Good deal right?

Wrong. You can buy 300gb drives from Best buy right now for $69. You can find them for $50 online. Going with dual layer discs makes the price difference even higher. I would recommend that if you need to backup that you go with a drobo or windows home server and just load up on terabyte discs (around $100) Just keep track of the failures so you can swap them out without losing anything.
