BAM is a bookstore -- not a family bookstore or a chick book bookstore or a self help bookstore -- they carry every kind of reading material you can imagine. They even have the Joy of Sex and other "self-help" books. Someone most likely picked the book up in that section and moved elsewhere to read it and not look so obvious. You should keep an eye on your kids I completely agree, but you shouldn't run to the News Media to handle something that you as a parent could have handled with the Manager of the store. You immediately jump to the Porn conclusion -- nudity is art in many ways and I doubt very seriously that "child porn" is sold on the open market -- that is saved for the dirty old men on the internet. I appreciate your wanting to protect the children, but I think you over-reacted to this situation. And by "hiding the book" for the News guy to fine -- you just hid the book for some other unsuspecting person to find it instead -- that seems like you were the one being shady...

I agree with NWBama -- you should have handled it right then and there with a manager and made the scene instead of running to the News Media -- that's so typical of the thinking of people today.
I needed to buy a "gag" gift at Christmas for a party and someone suggested Spencer's in the mall would be a good place to look. I went in and was shocked at some of the things that I saw. They have a section of t-shirts for infants and you wouldn't believe some of the language that was on them. I hope nobody would put that on a baby. I don't mean just inuendos; it was the actual words. That store needs to be x-rated.
P.S. I am in no way a prude either, but this was over the top.

Are you afraid the infants would read the logos on their shirts? How terrible to have a 6 month old baby offended by a tee shirt Big Grin

I did not know little six year olds would be so curious. Now, we park at the store we are going to and go in the outside entrance and then get into my car and go to the next store or we go to the other side of the main walkway. He embarrased me so badly that day... I chuckled a little on the inside but it was inappropriate... it was absolutely my fault for parading him through there... I just had no idea but I am learning everyday... Roll Eyes

Small world...my wife has to do the same thing with me when we go to the mall. Red Face

I'm a little upset at this! It blows my mind that a 6 year old was looking at the mannequins in "that way"!

I've always wondered why it was so easy to get The BF to go in there with me....

No, Sassy, I didn't think the babies would be offended by the t-shirt. I just think it would be very trashy to put on a baby. Or on anyone else, for that matter.

And you have a right to that opinion.

There are others, though, that don't share it. Although I pretty much agree with you about inappropriate apparel for infants and minors, I think there are times and places that even what some consider the trashiest logo or dirtiest sayings are acceptable.

I know that what I see as vulgar, others seem to think cute or expressive. And some things I see as profound and thought provoking, others see as obscene or shocking.

Beauty and ugly are in the eye of the beholder.

This past weekend we took my family to Books a Million like we do quiet often.. We always let the older kids look around.. my 11 year old nephew came up to me and ask me to look what he had found.. It was a book.. Inside Japan's Sex Houses.. every page a nude Japanese girl.. the back had definitions of the different sex acts performed.. He found it in the photography section.. I did not know they carried pornography.. and every documentary that I have seen about the sex houses in other countries the girls were always under age.. so I guess that makes it child porn.. I contacted a news station .. hid the book and let them know where it was.. I am going to call manager tomorrow.. couldn't do it that night.. was really upset..
Just wanted everyone to beware of letting your children out of your sight there.. No telling what they might see.....

Just curious as to whether you and your family ever actually BUY books at BAM or just use them as a cheap form of entertainment? Do yourself and BAM a favor and use the library.
I am still trying to figure out how this person was so upset they could not speak to the manager AT THE TIME,but was not too upset to look up the phone number of a media source and make that call.
Also trying to figure out why this person was not the least bit concerned that an 11 yr old boy would even want to share his book with nude pics he "found" with an aunt.

I can't think of any circumstance where the word f--k would be appropriate on anyone's t-shirt especially a baby. As I said, I am not a prude by any means; but to be in a store that allows children in and have this stuff on display is in my opinion offensive and should be to everyone.

This is twice you've made a point to claim you are not a "prude" (Definition: One who is excessively concerned with being or appearing to be proper, modest, or righteous.) I think you have your own definition of the word, and that it doesn't agree with Mr. Webster's version.

Ok, you don't like the f-bomb. I understand that. But,there are others that would disagree with you. I most recently saw it several times on shirts in connection with our immediately previous President. I didn't like it, but I respected their right to have an opinion and express it.

You are aware of a document called the Constitution of the United States, and the Ten Amendments to the Constitution we call the Bill of Rights? The First Amendment has been ruled on regarding profanity in Cohen v. California (1971), where a protester wearing a jacket stating "f--k the draft", while in a courthouse, was arrested. The Supreme Court ruled that it was a simple public display, rather than a direct insult or intent to incite harm, and that he could not be held criminally liable. No other rulings that I know of contradict this one.

My advice is that since you know the store sells that type of product, you should avoid it. I doubt that they will close the store because you find their merchandise offensive, as they have been in business since the late 70's in that location.
In a dissenting opinion, Justice Harry Blackmun, joined by Burger and Black, suggested that Cohen's wearing of the jacket in the courthouse was not speech but conduct (an "absurd and immature antic") and therefore not protected by the First Amendment.

Thank you for your definition, but I know exactly what the word prude means and I agree totally with Mr. Webster's definition. What did you think I thought it meant?

I respect everyone's right to have and express their opinions but not when it infringes on my rights. I am well aware of the Constitution, but I wasn't exactly looking at this from a legal viewpoint; more from a moral view. If it wouldn't bother you to take your children into a store and have them see something like this, that is a moral judgement, not a legal one.

No, I don't suppose they will go out of business if I don't go back in there and buy that ten dollar gag gift. But, then again, you never know.

I think you may have made an assumption that is not necessarily accurate.

But you should be aware that BAM (and any other book store) has a section for human sexuality. BAM's is quite extensive - both sides of half an aisle - with each book covering anything from the Kama Sutra to the evolution of sex to manuals to fantasy. All are replete with pictures and graphic illustration and language. And all of them are at eye level to a 5 year old.

It's not "porn" if it is educational material. Your child will pick up on your attitudes about sex. You need to consider whether that is a good thing or not. In my opinion, an open, frank discussion about sex that removes this silly puritanical attitude we Americans have about sex is a very productive way to lower your blood pressure and educate your children about sex.
I have been wondering whether I should give you people the satisfaction from me commenting on what you have said. The DHR statement had to be over the top.. My children are well supervised and taken care of. In fact, more so that most of the people that do go to Books A Million.. books thrown everywhere toys out of new boxes strown all over the place.. Guess these parents just sat there and watch while they destroyed the childrens section.. My children are of all ages..because I have joint custody of my neices and nephews.. I am very proud that my nephew felt comfortable enough to bring the book to my attention instead of being a sneaky little @$$ and continue looking at it.
I am very sorry that I offended so many of you.. I was just concerned that this type of material was at the reach of our young children.. And the comment about the library..yes we do go to the library and yes.. we do give Books A Million quite a lot of business .. in our library at home we have over 500 books.. So the feedback that I got from most of you.. maybe you wouldn't mind putting your children on a mailing list so for their next birthday they can receive a copy of the book about Japan's Sex Houses.. I am really sorry that I offended so many of you.. Guess we'll just kept the filth for our children to be exposed too....

There is a big difference between letting an 11 year old find a book like that because he's wandering around a book store unsupervised, and purposely putting a name on a mailing list to receive it in the mail.

I think you'll find that a poll of people who have posted here will tell you that you have NOT offended us.

Now. You don't need to take offense because we're expressing opinions that may be contrary to yours.

As I've said before. Both beauty and ugly are in the eye of the beholder. What is filth to you is art to another.

Sorry but YOU are the one who was "too upset' to deal with the manager on this matter,,yet was NOT too upset to
1.call a media source to report it
2. hide the book for the media to find it
Offended? nope, not at all. I simply saw someone who thought they might get themselves on the evening news for one of those 30 second shots,,proclaiming their concern for the children of course.
I agree. "Fifteen minutes of fame" was the first thing that came to my mind when I read dreamn wouldn't talk to the manager but called the media and hid the book. Why ELSE would someone do that??? Also, I wasn't "offended" either and didn't really even think it strange that an 11 y.o. boy brought the book to show her. I just thought dremn was trying to get her/his face on television. Roll Eyes
