Okay I admit it's borderline whether to post this on the Religion board or the Political board but I'll choose this one because of the emphasis that I am giving with relation to it.  It was sad, at least to me, to think that as I read this it would be nice if it was the American President that would make such a remark but instead it's Russia's.

I grew up hearing about the Godless Communist and how Russia was a Godless country but actually that's not the case.  The following statement by Putin

"There are big countries and small countries, rich and poor, those with long democratic traditions and those still finding their way to democracy. Their policies differ, too," he wrote. "We are all different, but when we ask for the Lord's blessings, we must not forget that God created us equal."

I thought, as I read this, I would be nice if our own President could make such a statement but I don't think he ever could or would in today's society.  It almost makes you think things are so turned around when you hear more reason and gratitude to God coming from Putin than our own Politicians.  Maybe it was a speech writer and maybe he doesn't mean it but in any other context taken by just what you read in the excerpt above most, traditional conservative Americans would think of the statement as containing traditional American Values or what over the years have come to be thought of as typical American Values among which are democracy and belief in and gratitude to God.

We all grew up hearing those things. Quite a shock to find out you've been lied to and mislead isn't it. Now then, examine all the other things "religion" has told you to just accept as truth, and found out  aren't true.

Analysis: Heartwarming though it is, the tale of little Teddy Stoddard and his inspirational teacher, Mrs. Thompson, is a work of fiction. The original story, which first appeared in significantly different form in the magazine Home Life in 1976, was written by Elizabeth Silance Ballard (now Elizabeth Ungar) and called "Three Letters from Teddy." The main character's name was Teddy Stallard, not Teddy Stoddard.

In 2001, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette columnist Dennis Roddy interviewed the author, who expressed amazement at how often and how freely her short story has been adapted, rarely with proper credit. "I've had people use it in their books, except they made it as if it happened to them," she told Ruddy. Paul Harvey used it in a radio broadcast. Dr. Robert Schuller repeated it in a televised sermon.(And claimed it happened to someone he knew) It has been passed from person to person as a "true story" on the Internet since 1998. Though it's loosely based on her personal experiences, Ungar insists the story is pure fiction.

For the record, the only Stoddard connected with Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines was John D. Stoddard, an engineer and cancer victim, after whom the John Stoddard Cancer Center was named. He died in 1998.

==========

The Communist officially rejected religion, but with the fall of the Soviet Union, and the fall of that decree, Russia almost immediately reclaimed the title of one of the most religious countries in the world, their prominent religion being Orthodox Catholic.

The religion never went away, just went underground.

No I don't have rose colored (or Russian RED) glasses on so that I believe the former KGB colonel, now Russian President isn't a very crafty and wise politician and leader.  I also don't know exactly how Putin actually feels or believes but if you go only by the words in this particular quote from his article and not the complete context of it then it could well have been stated by Kennedy or even Reagan.  America is exceptional in it's content structure and founding as well as being composed of many different people and not just one nationality.  It is the abilities and the possibilities given to each citizen that makes us unique and special but I also believe that in many ways we, each of us, are more alike our counterparts in many other Nations than we are different from them.  I mean in what motivates us, love of family and freedom or to be free without some Government controlling their every movement.

What Putin did was not only outmaneuver Obama but actually put himself more in control of US Policy than Obama and Congress has by going past their heads and through the media to Americans in general who he knows, for the most part, oppose intervention.  The point I was trying to make is that it's Ironic that the statement came from a Russian where it's doubtful that it would come from an American today given our atmosphere in Washington.  Got to also remember that while Putin speaks of democratic traditions and moving toward democracy Russia has moved far more toward the old USSR than toward freedom and Democracy since he took over so I hold no illusion that he's something he's not.
