as someone who worked at one of the only electronic repair shops around here:

get a major brand (samsung, sony, panasonic, pioneer).

the RMA process is easier (better tech support for the techs), the parts get here quicker (constant orders, good credit)

get the longest extended warranty you can afford, and keep the straps on the wiimote.
You get what you pay for. Buying budget brands you run the risk of having a set that cannot be repaired after the warranty period expires. Some such as Olevia, Insignia or Visio may require you to keep the original box for shipment or have a 'shipping' fee that could cost almost as much as buying a new set.

If you buy a extended warranty, do it via the manufacture, as they usually only do it for a extra year. Technology is still changing and even a top tier company will likely not provide parts after 2-3 years on some sets and you may want a better one at that point anyways. Two years ago LCDs were 60hz, last year 120hz, this year 240hz and LED back lighting, next year OLED sets will be bigger, and SED can start to catch on after a while as well.
Do your research before you buy. Even big name brands can make crap.

Look for customer reviews. I found a great chainsaw that isn't a big name brand, but had raving reviews.

I also agree about buying extended warranties. Don't. If you do your research and find a quality product, you won't need a warranty. It's a total rip off.

Stay away from plasma. They are much heavier than LCD. With LCD technology advancements, you can get a much larger screen than you could a few years ago.

The size of your screen depends on how far away you sit from it.

Plasma is also generally better for "dark"movies. That was a big issue for me after dealing with a projection screen for years (they suck for dark movies - not enough contrast).

Still, your decision between plasma and LCD will depend on how big a screen you get,. LCD is cheaper for small screens, plasma is cheaper for larger ones although the delta is getting narrower.
i researched tvs for a while before getting mine. sure the vizios and insignias are tempting with their lower prices, but as stated earlier you get what you pay for. i went with a 32 inch samsung and it has been great for the past year. and yea with the warranty issue, i got the extended, but only because it was 99 dollars, so i figure that's not too bad of deal. odds are though that by the time my tv does die there will be bigger and better ones for the same price i paid for mine. and as i found out with computers, they seem to do fine until the warranty runs out. so if its only a small price go for it i say.
