I was wondering what this sales tax increase local officials are pushing is for exactly. After reading the article in the TD, all I got out of it is "it's for business incentives." What does that mean exactly? Not being privy to the inner workings of SEDA does "incentives" mean buying land, improving land, or what? What "incentives" do they offer that requires a fund? Mayor David Bradford said "we are just about tapped out in terms of providing money as incentives". That seems to be another word for bribe. I thought "incentives" meant no taxes or free use of land in industrial parks. Providing money sounds like they need to bribe someone and they need an endless supply of money. Before officials hike sales tax, they need to do a better job of handling the money they get now.JMHO

In the past, it meant more money for THEM... I hope that we have honest people in SEDA that IF they get an increase, they WILL FINALLY do the right thing for ALL the people instead of just a "select few".

That is EXACTLY wht it means, no taxes for new businesses, free land or a lease that any one of us would die for... such as $1 a year for 20 years.

I do not think that is an incentive, I think it is a pay-off... but to who? THAT is the question that needs to be asked AND answered honestly.

These principals should be applied to any and all proposals for incentives to businesses.

Government incentives to new business MUST apply to all similar, existing businesses.

NO INCENTIVE should be given to any compnay that is not producing goods for EXPORT from the region. (if city A and B are competing for a Sewing Machine Factory, the incentive is a legitimate competitive tool if the sewing machines are going to be sold outside the region)

No retail business should be given ANY government subsidy, ever. UNLESS and only unless the retail buisness involves Public Health and welfare and is not being provided by a competing business.

Now, I don't have any Idea at all what the circumstances are in this particular situation, but those rules apply IN EVERY SITUATION.
