instead of Trillian, i would go with the more resource friendly open source program Pidgin

www.pidgin.im

open source in the good way, like firefox and linux.

Pidgin has MANY security issues...leave it alone.

Plain text passwords

BTW...of the computers I get that are infected...ALL of them have one thing in common. The will have an IM service, or P2P, or porn.

Not to say you can't get infected other ways. These are almost sure to get you.

thats a limitation with libpurple, yes. trillian also has the same issue. along with most other common IM applications.

but i'd like to see any of those other software manufactures list the problem like the pidgin crew did, and tell you how to fix it (do not save your passwords, how purple is set to behave at default)

but as far as it goes, my machine has been running for days and pidgin is only using 14.4MB of ram, far better than most other modern clients.

while yes, most computers i see that are ate up with crap have limewire and such, thats normally the users fault for downloading infested files.

Do you see a problem there james? They've got a program and will even TELL YOU HOW TO FIX IT.

No, its the users fault for installing a p2p program on their computer. It doesn't make sense to make your computer part of a network that YOU DON'T CONTROL.

well, pidgin is a open source program- if you can think of a better way to implement password storage for them, they will be more than glad to take your code. they have MTN setup for this reason.

if you don't connect to networks you don't control, i suggest you unplug your modem now.

the networks are not actively tryin' to infect the users, the users typically have to download and initiate something to be infected, therefor it is the users fault for being infected.

I have complete control of my computer on the internet. Do you not? You are attempting to twist meanings here. actually your next reference shows this.

Now tell me...what did you download to be able to access the internet?

Its EXACTLY like I said. Stay away from p2p (filesharing), IMs (Instant messaging services), and any kind of porn.

Please don't give people false security. A knowledgable person can get away with doing some of those things...most users are NOT knowledgable enough. But business is good, on second thought, keep it up. Wink

jetboy: i've came to the conclusion you're just a interweb douchebag. when 4chan comes back up i'm sure we'll see less of you.

there's no reason for two tech's to be arguing, usually neither one of them are right, usually they need each other to solve a problem. i am far from a computer expert, but i don't believe in scaring my clients, i teach them. if you tell them not to do something, they'll do it anyway-- if you teach them the right way, you won't see them until someone else in their family has a computer problem.

everyone else: there is no reason to stay away from p2p, IM, and porn-- just use common sense and don't click on something that you don't think is right. if you're not sure, just screenshot it, close the window, and ask in the application's support forum.

reasonably safe p2p software:
utorrent
soulseek
dc++

reasonably safe IM software:
pidgin
meebo.com

SNIP. self edit.

if you're not sure about your discretionary abilities, run a active virus scanner (avg, NOD32) and MAKE SURE IT IS UPDATED.

also run spybot search and destroy, and malware bytes anti-malware (free) once a week, MAKE SURE THEY ARE UPDATED.

those two things will save you from a lot of problems.
