I spoke with Len Gregory and there are no new deputy’s positions being created. He is going to change the work schedule from five eight hour shifts to four 10 hour shifts. That creates overlapping shift and allows for double the deputies on the road between 9pm and 3am. This is done without hiring one more person. The work schedule would be 7am -5pm. The next shift would come in at 5pm-3am and the next shift would come in at 9pm-7am. This puts double the deputies on the road without hiring anymore deputies. The extra supervisor positions will cost about one thousand dollars a month. The deputies are already getting paid to be a deputy. So the extra cost would be paying to make them a supervisor. If five supervisor positions are created and the increase in salary is two hundred dollars per person, that equals one thousand dollars. Len stated he would pay that out of the Pistol Permit Money. Seventeen thousand permits are sold each year at five dollars a permit. That is over eighty five thousand dollars a year brought into the sheriff’s office.
So after evaluating Len’s statements, he can provide more things without costing the taxpayers an extra dime. Len also stated he would sign a contact with the county to ensure that all pistol permit money and extra food money can only be spent on the sheriff’s department and not put into the sheriff pocket, which Alabama law currently allows.
So, those deputies that are promoted to supervisor are going to work the extra day that is not covered by changing to a 4 day workweek? For $200.00 extra a month? Thats 10 extra hours a week (an extra shift to make up the 5th day) for less than $50.00 (actually $46.16 / week). So, with those numbers, the supervisors are paid $4.62 a hour for that extra day? Im sure they'll be jumping at that opportunity.
Funny math is an understatement.....
