I know we are living in New Testament times. Jesus said I didn't come here to change the law, but to make new. Does he condone capital punishment? If the law of the land conflicts with the laws of God, who's in jeopardy? I always said I would be the first one to throw the switch.

Hi Child,

While I know that capital punishment is Biblical; I could personally never take a life.

Let me clarify that. To protect my family, my country, i.e., our freedom, or for self-preservation -- I could take a life. Also, if that were the only way to stop a man from raping/beating a woman or molesting a child -- I could do it. But, it would weigh on me for the rest of my life.

There is nothing I find more despicable that a rat -- yet, I could not even kill a mouse or a rat. In the early 1980s, my family and I were in our family room watching television. A mouse came out of a crack in our fireplace and ran across the room. That night before going to bed, I set a mouse trap in the fireplace. A few hours later, my conscience bothering me, I got up and removed the mouse trap. The next day, I put cement in the crack in the fireplace -- a better and more civil solution.

About twelve years ago, a neighbor who lived next door with her daughter came to me for help. She had been hearing rats in her walls and ceiling. So, her landlord put traps for the rats. The night before a rat had been caught in one of the traps -- not the clamp and kill them type trap -- but, the type where the rat is stuck to strong adhesive and cannot escape. But, the rat is still alive and jumping around making all sort of noise.

My panicked neighbor came to me for help. I took the rat and the trap out, got my hammer and was about to do away with Mr. Rat. But, as he lay there, I could not hit him. So, I got in my car, drove a few blocks away to a big empty field -- and with my pliers I pulled the rat loose from the adhesive and set him free in the field -- a better and more civil solution. And, one that would not weigh on my conscience.

So, while I know that capital punishment is Biblical -- please, God, never allow me to be in a situation where I would have to take the life of another person.

Just my thoughts.

God bless, have a wonderful, blessed day,

Bill

Hi Bunny,

Yep! I held the sticky paper in one hand, and with the pliers grabbed the long tail of the rat and, with a bit of effort, freed it from the trap of the sticky adhesive.

While this may sound cruel -- it is not near as cruel as a hammer on the head -- or, being left to starve to death in the field, stuck to the trap -- or being the victim of other predators when it could not defend itself because it was stuck.

So, the pliers and a wee bit of gentle tugging seemed the humane thing to do. And, leaving it in a field far from my home was the smart thing to do.

And, can't recall, but I may have wished it, "Vaya con Dios!"

God bless, have a wonderful, blessed day,

Bill

Hi Child,

The last time I looked -- "Vaya con Dios!" -- is Spanish and mean, "Go with God!"

Achtung! You will be Blessed by God! You will have a wonderful, blessed day!

Hi B,

Now you tell me! Twelve years too late for that poor rat! And, I pray that I never have the same problem again.

Bugs, snakes, etc., do not bother me. Rats! They give me the creeps. Don't know if you ever saw the movie "1984" about the Big Brother society.

In this 1984 futuristic society, their main weapon to control the people was to not allow any personal relationships. Being Hollywood, the Government Soldiers found one couple who still professed love for one another. So, Big Brother had to destroy that relationship.

Their method was to find the person's greatest fear -- and then use that to make him/her turn against the other.

His greatest fear was rats. So, they took him to a room, opened the door -- and there must have been a million rats in that room -- all squealing and squirming.

Standing at the door of that room the man broke down and betrayed the woman he loved.

Watching that scene, I would have sold my children. I saw the movie many years ago -- but, still get a nervous stomach when I even think about that room.

Now, you know my secret. Please do not tell Big Brother!

God bless, have a wonderful, blessed day,

Bill

The rat would have probably given up all the secrets he knew.... like for instance.... dirt on the other 10,000 rat brothers and cousins running along the sewers and drains close to your house.... but don't let that freak you out.... they're probably more afraid of you, then you are of them

I'M OKAY AS LONG AS I HAVE MY RELIABLE PROTECTOR!

all of which is intersting....
because the bible says 'thou shalt not murder'.

i really don't think i'd have a problem with takeing the life of someone that needed to be dead.

i'm not sure exactly what that says about me...

some dude on the street.. the idea of walking up behind a random stranger and dropping him... well, it's just not something that fits in my head...
... but if i *KNEW* without a shadow of a doubt that the person was a rapist, a child molester, someone who made it a habit of murdering others for the entertainment of it...

... yeah, i'm pretty sure i could put a blade in the back of his skull and move on as if nothing ever happened.

there are some people we, as a whole, are better off without. it might make me a horrible person, but i don't share bills squeamish nature.

he said he prayed he was never put in the position where he had to take another mans life.

me, i pray that the sitiuaton where i have to take another mans life doesn't come up... but if it does, i'll cap the guy and not think twice about it.

this is no slight on bill, mind you... and probably a negative statement on myself.

bill wants to avoid the neccessity of taking a man's life because of how he would have to cope wiht it afterwards.
i can respect that.

i want to avoid takeing a mans life, because of the situation it would involve... not for the idea of me killing a guy.

if i come home to find someone in my house doing horrible things to my family, it's the horrible things done to my family i'll cry over, not the dead guy at my feet.

again... this isn't a slight on you bill, for a change... it's just a mention that we are totally wired differently.

you'll feel remorse at being forced to take another mans life for the safety of your family.
i woould feel remorse at what was done to my family that forced me to take a mans life.

it's a subtle difference, but a distinct one, and in the end probably makes you a better person that me, because i wouldn't feel one inch of remorse for spraying the guys brains all over the wall.
I agree, murder and kill are not the same.

If someone attacked my kids and I had a gun, yep, they are dead. No remorse.

Before you say, what about hubby?, he is 6'4", 330 pounds and built like an ox. He'll be OK, the attacker will be praying to escape . Smiler

If the person tried for murder has no sense of morals and preyed on the young, old, or helpless, sorry, fry him.

Also, the ones that do 'honor killings' in the Islamic religion, fry them too.
