The theater manager said the average cost for a couple to see a movie is $60.00. I know it's at least 40 when I take my children to a matinee.

The two lg. Coke/Popcorn combo is now 15.00 instead of 10. It costs them a whopping 15 cents to fill a large Coke and even less for the popcorn - which is not even fit to eat.

I only see movies that lend themselves to the big screen like King Kong or Titantic now at the theater. .... Or James Bond, just because I like to see Daniel Craig emblazoned across an entire, giant screen.

The Reader, Doubt, Slumdog - will all have to wait for release on HBO.
i'll pay for the tickets, sure 2 might cost me 18 bucks but you cant beat the experience of watching a movie on a big screen with superb sound. i never buy popcorn or cokes, i usually just go to the store and get my wife to smuggle in the goods. and tidefan, you must be seeing the major films, because the ones not as popular they show on those tiny screens that are no better than the ones here
i don't even bother with the theater here anymore. if i'm gonna drop $40 to see a movie, i'll do it at the monaco in huntsville, and that's maybe once a month when i'm already in hutsville on the weekend. like George, i'll only go for something that is worth it on the big screen, i.e. Coraline last weekend. other than that, i take advantage of my $10 an month to netflix
I can't even put those together, Firedancer. Alcohol makes me sleepy though. I don't think that would work for me, but I'm glad you enjoy it. Smiler

Thanks for the heads up, Ron. I already refuse to go to the theater unless it's a movie I really want to see. Unfortunately, without my popcorn & DP, it's just not the same. Same thing with the cheapo hotdogs at the ballgame that you would turn your nose up to any other time. They just go together.
Just got back from the Carmike theater. Took the kids to see Coraline. $48 bucks total. That was 4 matinee tickets nd 2 medium popcorns. We smuggled in the cokes and shared popcorn. What is it coming to???? I guess they think we will continue to pay the prices. I did not know til today thay had increased the prices. I won't be going for back or a while!
Firedancer, how much are movie tickets there? Are they less than Carmike in Florence now? Where do you get drinks? Is it in with the popcorn/coke station? Did you mean Connor's when you said dinner or is that served in the theater as well? This sounds like dinner theatre, but movie screen rather than live acting. That would be cool.

Monaco Pictures

It's a real night out, Joy!
No...the bar is in the "VIP" section (aka-21+). The VIP section also gets you balcony seating. They have a restaurant downstairs (The Scene) but you can also eat in the lounge in the VIP section. Connor's is totally independent of the theatre but it's also at Bridgestreet & I PROMISE YOU they have the best steaks ever!
Back to the Monaco....VIP tkts are $2 more than regular (which are 13 I think) but I promise it is worth it. No children, and most people who are paying that much for a ticket are "civilized" and you are able to enjoy the show. Since I only go to the movies for certain films (the rest I'll get on DVD), it's worth paying the extra cash.

***edit-didn't see the link above when I posted. That would've been easier!
monaco is over rated. yes the Major blockbusters on opening weekends are put in those big theatres, however, watch a normal movie and they're on a screen no better than carmike. the best theatre ive been to is The Rave. more of their screens are bigger and they have better seating overall. the monaco website plays up their theatre, not showing you ALL of it. its good though, just not great.
I think the King DriveIn opens around the first weekend in April.

We need a nice/clean theatre that shows non-recently released movies at cheap admittance rates, they could make up the cost with $8.00 popcorn/coke combos (which would still be cheaper than seeing a recent released flick).

They could also have 1 screen designated for older popular movies such A Star Is Born, Grease, Star Wars, Top Gun, Casablanca, Gone With The wind, Dirty Dancing, or any other top Oscar winning or nominated movie from the past 65 years. I would love to see some of the older movies on the big screen again.
Going by fandango, its $8.50, which still isn't bad. Where I live its $10. Digital, which is all Carmike runs is $12, and since most places only have one digital projector its tied up with the 3d content.

Be glad with what you have. Not many places have all digital 2k projection, especially at what I consider a reasonable price. You guys could have still been in the Hickory Hills with stereo only sound still.
Yes, it didn't last long. They didn't make any improvements to the theaters, so you still had whole rows of broken seats, theaters with no heating or air, bad sound, and concession prices were just as high. Sometimes the projectors would break down, and the movie would be late or canceled. CrustyTeen and I waited for 30 minutes beyond start time for one movie to finally be canceled.

Basically, you got what you paid for. In the end, they couldn't compete with a $3 rental.
