My father needs cataract surgery. He lives in Florence and needs to decide whether to have it done locally or in Huntsville. He knows of two people who had badly botched surgeries in Florence, both by the same doctor. Both cases were clear error..in one case the wrong sized replacement lens was used, causing infection.

My father has all but decided to let another doctor in that practice do his surgery. I wonder if anyone has had experiences, good or bad, with local cataract removal?

I don't want to start a doctor bashing thread. I'd just like to supply him with as much information as I can before he has the procedure done.

It would be fine with me if y'all sent private messages to me, especially if you've had a bad experience and don't mind telling me the Dr.'s name.

My mother had hers done here. She was 68 at the time and a diabetic and did excellent. I'm new to this so not sure about mentioning names. Dr. Kim did hers and plan on using him again for the other eye. We've heard Dr's in B'ham referring patients back to him for problems so I figure he must be one of the best! My mother's aunt who is older than her had her surgery from another Dr. in that same group and also did excellent.
We had the same experience with Dr. Kim. My mom's surgery was on Thursday and he was going to be out on the weekend and Monday was a holiday. Before we left the surgery center he made sure we had his cell # to call if we had any problems over the weekend. He also checked my mother's eye before we left the center so we didn't have to come back the next day and made sure to answer all my questions about what to look for when he said "problems" because this was the first time we had experienced eye surgery. We were very pleased with and his entire staff. Also, one of my mother's appointments happened to be on an afternoon that we had a tornado warning and they made sure all patients were put in the back and taken care of durint the entire time.
Dr. Kim has excellent credentials, a great bedside manner, and is a great surgeon to boot. Dr. Taft is an excellent surgeon, lacks the bedside manner, and if you don't mind him sharing his overbearing knowledge on subjects you probably don't care about, is quite satisfactory. There are a couple of ophthalmologists in the area I wouldn't trust your mangy mutt to.
Thanks, everyone, for your replies. As I thought might happen, the doctor who put the wrong size lens in my friend's eye has come very highly recommended on this thread!

I guess there's a certain margin of error in all surgeries. I was just concerned because we know two people with very bad cataract surgery outcomes, and both used the same local doctor. One had to have the surgery redone, the other's vision is permanently impaired.

I try not to be a knee-jerk "Go to Huntsville or Birmingham" person when it comes to medical procedures. There are good doctors in this area, and I still think ECM is a good hospital. My Mother had her life saved at the heart center a ECM, and my father has had successful back surgery there too. In the past he has gone to Birmingham for back surgery but he had confidence in a local doctor, and it worked out fine.

I'd just like my dad to get more than one opinion since it is EYE SURGERY. I don't even like to type that phrase, much less think about it!
