Suicide Epidemic Among Veterans

A CBS News Investigation Uncovers A Suicide Rate For Veterans Twice That Of Other Americans.

(CBS) They are the casualties of wars you don’t often hear about - soldiers who die of self-inflicted wounds. Little is known about the true scope of suicides among those who have served in the military.

But a five-month CBS News investigation discovered data that shows a startling rate of suicide, what some call a hidden epidemic, Chief Investigative Reporter Armen Keteyian reports exclusively.

“I just felt like this silent scream inside of me,” said Jessica Harrell, the sister of a soldier who took his own life.

"I opened up the door and there he was," recalled Mike Bowman, the father of an Army reservist.

"I saw the hose double looped around his neck,” said Kevin Lucey, another military father.

"He was gone,” said Mia Sagahon, whose soldier boyfriend committed suicide.

Keteyian spoke with the families of five former soldiers who each served in Iraq - only to die battling an enemy they could not conquer. Their loved ones are now speaking out in their names.

From CBS New's own website:

1. All of the rates of suicide we presented are adjusted. The overall rates are adjusted for age and gender in both the veteran and non-veteran populations. The male and female rates are age adjusted. And the age breakdowns are adjusted for gender.

So they admit that they manipulated the rates. And we're supposed to believe them?

Also, it includes veterans of all ages...including ones that served as long ago as Viet Nam, Korea, WWII and quite possibly, WWI. I don't think many of them would have killed themselves because of the Iraq war, but a lot of them do for other reasons.

A lot of people who have been in harm's way end up committing suicide. Soldiers, cops, firefighters, EMT's and doctors. It's tragic, but not unknown. And a lot of times it's unpreventable, because the victim shows very little or no sign ahead of time.

It is interesting. I think the CBS report is skewed, and not accurate. And ICH assumes too many facts without proof, and postulates way too much. But I do agree, the topic of suicide is interesting.

Suicide is a horrible problem. I know this personally. Other than traffic crashes, if a cop dies a violent death, statistically it will more than likely be by their own hand.

A reality I deal with every day.
More anti-American rants by Bush hating media.... the fact that they are excited to find 15,000 dead soilders tells all you need to know.

To Sassy's post, your right, and it isn't just folks in dangerous lines of work...it's just people. For all we know several soldiers who commit suicide may have just found out their wives or girlfriends were cheating on them, or broke up with them...or a family member died or their favorite pet...May have had nothing at all to do with war. That is something CBS or anyone else can't prove. Like I said, just another pathatic attempt by Bush haters to make him look bad...absurd and treasonous lunacy.
do any of you know anyone in the military that deals with the numbers of suicide? If not you are only stating opnions, which are based on numbers supplied to the media to quote to the public. So there WILL be forums such as this and there WILL be conversations such as this,,,,,,,,,,,,discrediting true numbers.
Everyone might should remember the military does not share its secrets with Joe Public, and a good thing. Our country would be far to vunerable for sure.
I did not have to read this. After reading just a few words I knew right up front what this was about. No I have not read the website before.

There are guys from the the last wars that are capable of committing suicide today and some still have nightmares and some are very destructive and high strung.

Yes I think it's true that the Pentagon does hide a lot of information to avoid additional problems. Still a lie is a lie and that's what some of them do.
