I thought I had seen it all till the other day. I've seen cell phone drivers swerve into my lane, run stop signs, run red lights, drive 15 MPH slower than the speed limit thinking that is a safe solution (most of the time in the passing lane). The other day I was driving up a slight inclined hill when I observed a young boy riding a bicycle down the hill. It was apparent he was riding his bike with no hands. As a kid I used to do this myself and was fairly good at it because I concentrated on what I was doing. As the young man got closer I noticed he was not as proficient and was swerving from one side of the road to the other. I slowed down just before he lost control of his bike and almost hit me head on. He wasn't concentrating on the task at hand, HE HAD A PHONE AND WAS TEXTING!!!!! and it almost cost him dearly. How many people are going to have to die before something is done?

Bah, these problems usually take care of themselves with the stupid people that do it ending up dead.

Actually a good solution is to just put a GPS in every phone, have a program that runs on the phone at all times that uses GPS to monitor speed. If the speed is above 10 miles per hour it cuts out the ability to text, and also if it doesn't detect a bluetooth headset at those speeds, it will not let you talk on it either.
Oh! Now THERE'S a Darwin Award just waiting to happen! (referring to original post).

Loki, that speed limiter thing wouldn't work either. I remember reading an article about a city in Britain where they actually had to pad all the utility poles and lamp posts along the sidewalks because people were WALKING into them while texting......

I have observed this phenomenon before in Kent, CT.
*BONG! ow! *crumplethud*. *PRANG!* ah! What th'? It's hilarious!

This would also restrict the passengers in the vehicle. As a passenger, I want to be able to use my phone.
Hmm.

10MPH? You got any idea just how much damage can be caused below 10MPH? Just ask the lady who backs over her kid in the driveway at 2 1/2 MPH because she just HAD to fire off that quick text message to her bff before she left home.

Or the guy in the bank drive-up line who forgot he was supposed to be holding his foot on the brake and rear-ended the car in front of him.

Or the one who decides to fire off a quick text while waiting at a traffic light at a crosswalk with pedestrians in it and hears a horn honk behind him and hits the throttle-thinking the light has changed before getting the big picture and realizing that there are still peds in the crosswalk, the light HASN'T changed yet, and the horn wasn't for him-as he turns a little old lady into a smear on the pavement with a bloody rag at the other end of it 40 feet past the crosswalk at 10 MPH.

People need to realize that cars have the potential to be deadly weapons. You wouldn't be texting on your phone with a gun in your other hand-WHY on earth would you do it in a car?
