It’s kind of off the beaten trail but Champy’s Chicken, on 2nd Street in Sheffield has what I believe is the best fried chicken I’ve found in the Shoals area. I didn’t realize just how superior and good it was untill I tried and compared the new “bone-in” fried chicken at Cracker Barrel. While Cracker Barrel did a decent job on their “Southern Fried Chicken” and the crust was very crunchy the overall taste was far too bland for me to consider it any threat to Champys.
Cracker Barrel does have some good tasting “Homestyle” Chicken that they serve on Sundays but that chicken is white meat boneless and to me has a much better tasted than their new bone-in Southern Fried Chicken that they are trying out now, on their menu.
I’m sure there are other vendors and restaurants in the area that serve good “bone-in” southern fried chicken and I hope some folks, on here, recommend some other places. I’ve tried Jack’s Family Restauant and much like Cracker Barrel’s bone-in Sourthern Fried chicken it has a nice crust on it but the taste is quite bland. To me the closest competition to Champy’s Fried Chicken comes from Popeyes Lousiana Kitchen’s Mild chicken.
