I was called this morning by the schoolboard. The meeting for the Florence City "Dress Code" is April 11th. I have to come up with at least 500 signatures to go before the committee so we can change this stupid dress code. IF we can't come up with the signatures, it will be another 4 years before it goes to committee again. WHO'S WITH ME!!!!!!???????
Please e-mail me at: flhgrl@yahoo.com Please put
"Dress Code" in the Subject line. I will then get hold of you and we can all meet to sign this.
Thanks!!

ANYONE can sign.
This is for the Florence City School system.
Uniforms would be o.k. But, shouldn't our childred be able to express their own individuality?? Of course........No clevage, No Butt Cracks showing, No see through shirts, or profanity on the clothes. Right now the only clothes they can wear are Plain shirts (no writing) unless it says: Florence Falcons. They have to wear shorts that go to their knee's. Skirts that go down past the knee. They HAVE to tuck in there shirts and with a belt. NO UNTUCKED SHIRTS ALLOWED! And did you know that if they don't wear their Florece Falcon shirts on Fridays.......they have to have silent lunch and can not participate in outdoor activities. NO, they have to sit inside and write the HONOR CODE! This is ALL WRONG!
But!..........The teachers can wear sleeveless shirts and short skirts. I asked the councelor why SHE got to dress that way. Her response was......"THAT IS THE PERKS OF BEING FACULTY". Hmmmm......Shouldn't they abide by their own rules??? These children all look like they just walked out of a Golf store. A bunch of GEEKS! (no offense to anyone please).
Back to the Uniforms. I talked with Dr. Behrends today and she said Uniforms are the way she wanted to go. And I said that Florence City would have to pay for these. "SHE DIDN'T LIKE THAT" She said......NO.
I mean.........if you have a child in the Florence City Schools system and have tried to school clothes shop for them, YOU know what I am talking about.
PLEASE HELP!
The existing dress code is one of the better things to happen in our school system in years. Walk in my shoes for a day and you might understand. As far as shopping for clothes, the guidelines are readily available well before school begins, either by hard copy or (I think) on the fcs website.

Students who want to make a productive life for themselves need to realize that not much "individuality" is tolerated in the real world.

I, for one, find it refreshing to see students come into the building with shirts tucked into the pants, pants worn at the natural waist, no obscene material on tee shirts, and no girls with shirts cut so low that you can see the tops of their nipples.

Don't give me the shopping excuse. There are plenty of places, either in person or online, where appropriate clothing may be purchased.
If students are being punished for not wearing shirts with florence falcons on them on friday,If my children were still in school I would have the principle in front of the school board. This is why the drop out rate is so high because of students being downed by the system.Maybe they cannot afford to by the shirt. You have maybe 10% of teachers that care if the students do well & the rest are there to just draw a check. The school system is going overboard & nobody can stop them.I feel sorry for the kids that are being singled out by idiots over a shirt. The parents better take a stand before it gets any worse if that is possible.
I don't care if there are "perks" to being faculty.... dressing tacky is dressing tacky no matter if you are a teacher or a student.

When my child went to FMS, she wore a hoodie for several weeks that had an all-over design on it (a heart with an arrow through it). No one (teachers, office workers, etc) said a thing to her about it until about half-way through the school year when she was told in the hallway one day (by a teacher who had seen her all year long) she would have to turn the jacket inside out so the design would not show as it was considered "violent" because of the arrow. And here's another interesting story: a friend's son was told he could not wear a pair of designer jeans because they have a small loop in the seam of the leg with the designer name on it (not even big enough for a pencil to go through) because that small loop classified them as "carpenter" jeans!!! The friend's father happened to be a retired carpenter and she told them that those were in no way anywhere near being "carpenter" pants, but lost the battle anyway. As for tucking in the shirts... that is really stupid. Why?

I say if the students have to follow a dress code, everyone on the teaching faculty should have to follow the same dress code. I do like the fact that the pants have to sit at the waist, they have to wear a belt if there are belt loops on the pants, no low-cut/see-through shirts, no profanity/alcohol/vulgar language on the t-shirts, but some of the dress code is just plain stupid.

This would be my idea: Shorts (no shorter than an inch above the knee)/skirts (same length as shorts)/pants in colors of khaki, black, gray, or denim. Polo-style/button up/t-shirts in colors of royal blue, red, white, navy, pink, dark green, black, or gray. On Friday's (or special days) choice of what to wear as long as it follows the guideline for no profanity, etc., on t-shirts. No pants below the waist, belts at all times if loops in pants. This should apply to teachers as well as students.
Where I currently live they have a dress code as well and when school is getting ready to start again most of the stores start to stock up on slacks and dresses that are compliant. I'd imagine that stores do the same in the Shoals. If you are having trouble finding it, perhaps you are shopping at the wrong time, or simply complaining because its clothes that they only wear to school, so it's more money you have to spend...

Prison inmates don't get to wear guard uniforms.

I can rock a polo and khakis.

Finding the sizes you need in the clothes you need to fulfill the uniform requirements can be a pain. There are, however, other resources for buying what you need than your local retailers, especially if you have the time. Surely there's an online source you can try.
No horse in this race, but I agree about the dress policy that seems liberal. What if they made you all order out of some catalog and order the same thing. I wear Khakis 6 days a week. Yeah, I'm a geek.

I think the proper term would be preppie. It just might get them someplace some day. This way teachers don't have to spend 1/2 the day measuring skirts, waists, etc.

Either you don't have children at all...........or you only have a son. Girls clothes are very hard to find.

Really? Then you won't mind me making you adhere to a dress code between the hours of 7am and 4pm, right? Now, it may not be what you'd actually want to be seen in, what you will wear when you go to a family gathering, meeting friends for dinner, the ballgame, church, etc. So, you will in fact need to fork out money for two wardrobes. Not a problem, right? Some of us, raising children, don't have the funds to do that.

flhgrl is not asking for permission for "pants on the ground" or the right to show cleavage here. You can cover yourself, dress appropriately for school and not look like a dork. I know because I did it for 12 years of school.

The hardest thing to find, which took a LONG time to do, thank you, were jeans that met the dress code...no tears or rips...almost ALL the jeans available for my son had those little rip places on them, the worn look or whatever. THEN if you found some that did not have that, finding his size was almost impossible because he's the same size as most the guys his age. I wanted to find whoever came up with this dress code, give them my list & let them shop till they drop.

Your post is full of baseless assertions. Lay off the excuses.

I don't get your comment, "I can dress comfortably". Wearing a pair of training underwear would be very comfortable, but not appropriate. Nothing wrong with dressing "nice".
You do not have to be a moron to look like a moron. Have some pride in your appearance.

I guess I should say I can dress how i like, Not having to tuck in a shirt, and being able to wear a shirt with a UNA logo on it and not get in trouble. Or Shorts with a extra pocket on the side.
I have 3 kids in FCS.Girls are much harder to buy for and since dress codes are in place and not the trend clothes are hard to find.I buy clothes year around to fit in he dress code.Boys are not much easier but I am able to find some stuff. We have 2 sets of clothes because they want pictures, and words.Nothing offensive, peace signs and motorcycles,Alabama, and camo.
My oldest is a girl who would not be caught dead with cleavage showing or pants hanging to low. There still some girls that respect themselves.
There are several teachers who are offensive in the way they dress, they should follow the dress code also Smiler JMHO
Uniforms are the way to go. A "you can wear this but not that rule" is too complex, would require constant policing, is very opinionated (i.e., Mr. Joe thinks it is ok, but Ms. Jane thinks it is inappropriate),. Go uniforms....no problems to deal with. And you can still express your individuality if that is a desire....just buy Abercrombie skirts/pants/tops instead of Wrangler.
Thank you, momma3xs...see, if you really want to know what it's like, ask the parents or the students, those who actually deal with this dress code, not people who have never had to adhere to it.

I'm not really one for exaggeration. If I say it's a pain in the rear to shop for clothes that meet dress code, it is, but you are of course free to believe whatever you want.

Bob, it might as well be uniforms. Really, it is so strict that it feels like a uniform already to the kids.
I hate the baggy pants thing and some of the sloppy clothes kids wear but I do not understand why is the world kids can't wear shirts with Alabama (National Champions) on it, Auburn, or UNA. OK, our city leaders and school leaders are always talking about bringing in students for UNA OUR city University. How can we encourage our own kids to go to UNA when they can even where t-shirts with UNA on them. Its stupid. Let be proud of the university we have. Now, Alabama is the National Champions, are we as Alabamians not proud of that? I guess not in our city because our school kids can't wear anything with Alabama on it. If Auburn wins the championship next year, well sorry Auburn fans your kids will not be able to wear t-shirts proclaiming it because it is against policy. The reason given is because these shirts would be a distraction in class. That's ridiculous. I never remember being distracted by a t-shirt in my school days. This dress code can be tweaked to work better and make life easier for all parents and students.
I'm momma3xs' daughter. I go to FCS and I and a lot of my friends disagree totally with the dress code. From 5th to 12th grade, we have to dress according to this "code," and it's hard to find clothes according to the latest trends that are appropriate for school. It would be nice to get rid of tucking in shirts, making it to where we can wear appropriate shirts with pictures and writing, and stuff like that. I don't want it to where girls and guys can where WHATEVER. No short shorts, no low cut shirts, no sagging; stuff like that. 2" above the knee for shorts is a little long for shorts, but no bootie shorts. I agree with my mom. Everyone wants to wear peace signs and stuff. My brothers like wearing motorcycles and pokemon and things that boys like.
I would be more that happy to sign the petition flhgrl. As would most of my friends at school.
The children at the school I work for are also required to wear 'uniforms'. Khaki pants, shorts, or skirts and green or white polo shirts. The shirts cannot have any logo on them unless it's our schools logo - but even that is not a requirement. They can wear just plain shirts.

Our PTL (parent-teacher league) does a uniform exchange each year. A volunteer sets out a bin in the front lobby of our school to collect gently used uniforms that the children have outgrown.

After about a week of collecting, she organizes by girl/boy and then sizes and sets them on a table for parents to take as needed.

This is done during the first month of school and our parents really love it. It allows for them to clean out closets of clothes that their children can no longer wear and for others to have uniforms provided at no cost to them.

I don't know if Florence has a system like this but it could be a helpful suggestion if the current dress code policy stays in place.

FYI -- I wear a starched shirt, pants, and necktie every day except on Friday, when I sometimes wear khakis and a golf shirt or pressed, decent jeans and a golf shirt. Both of my children went to FHS and we never had a problem finding appropriate clothing for them.

I'm thrilled for you that you have that choice in clothing. I'm sure you look very nice.

I don't know why you never had a problem finding clothing. Maybe your kids appreciate or like dressing that way...that's fine, but most do not...or maybe they were not an average size, which makes finding that average size very difficult because the demand is so high. I did have a problem finding clothing and am far from the only one.

This is not too much to ask, people. It's just not.

go hokies, if the dress code does not change, those were really great ideas!

A petition would be a complete waste of time. The "system" already knows that virtually every kid in school dislikes the dress code.

Let go back in time to the reason this code came into being: The system had 5th grade girls who's mother dressed them up like Britney Spears with mini dresses up to their butt cracks.

Guys sagged so that half their butt showed, too. White guys were wearing Confederate tee-shirts. Black folks were wearing Black Power shirts.

In all, it was just a mess.

So the system WANTED to institute a true uniform. There was so much outrage that it was cut back and watered down to what we have now.

Those that complain they can't find clothes need to get a life. The rules are very, ery simple. No huge logos. No tee-shirts with any sort of message. No short dresses. No boobs hanging out. No sagging.

Shirts must be tucked in for two reasons: 1. That's how you are expected to dress in the "real" world. 2. untucked shirts can hide guns or other weapons. That is also why "cargo" pants are not allowed: too much hiding places.

So the current dress code is what it is because PARENTS aren't doing their job.

I find it a little disturbing that parents want to allow their girls to wear mini-dresses. With the ubiquity of picture-taking cell phones, do you really want your daughter's private parts texted around thw whole school?

If this dress code is brought up again, wht will happen is that true uniforms will be instituted. That is the only way to stop the teachers from having to take time to enforce the rules.

So be careful what you wish for. You might just get it.

This about it Joy. That rule came about because girls and guys had rips in places that showed a little too much.

If the system allows rips, how much of a rip is too much? 1 inch? Just a little one on the crotch? How much butt can you show before you break the rule?

And most importantly, WHOS GOING TO ENFORCE THAT? Well, the teachers; of course. They have all the time in the world for that, don't they?

My boys have had absolutely no problems adhering to the very reasonable code that exists now. to claim that you cannot find jeans without rips is simply ludicrous. Evey pair of jeans me and my wife have are rip-less.
One more time...

We all had dress codes in school. A rip with your skin showing would get you sent home then...absolutely possible to do the same now. There's no need to be extreme with a dress code to accomplish that. A little common sense is better.

I would think that the stricter the dress code, more broken rules to look for, the more time it takes someone to enforce it. Wink

I do NOT have to tuck my shirt in to look polished and professional in the "real" world. That would be a pretty boring wardrobe as well, but to each his own.

I would be curious to know what the dress code is where we've had school shootings. While I appreciate the concern and effort, I seriously doubt that a dress code will stop a killer or any other type of crime. He or she will find ways around the rules and do it anyway. I also don't agree with everyone having to pay the price for the crimes of a few. Deal with those who commit the crimes and leave the innocent alone.

Not that it's any of your business, but either one or both of us did. By the way, my son was much taller than average for his age. We never had a problem buying appropriate school clothing. Both of them are out of school now, and both of them look like professionals when you see them. Education is about more than Math, Science, History, and English.

A large part of education is acclimating students to the real world.
None of my business? What are we discussing again? It's kind of important to the argument. Put your wife on the phone. Big Grin

You say you had no problems (although I'd love to hear your wife's version). I did. I'm glad for you, but can see that you are completely unconcerned for me or anyone else who tells you their very real problems in meeting this dress code.

Yeah, we had a dress code but people just didn't dress that way when I was in school. We simply didn't wear jeans that had holes big enough to show your butt.

I guess there was the "tube top" craze but that was as far as it got.

I can dang sure tell you that no guys walked around with their underwear showing and girls didn't wear their bras on the outside.

Things are different now.

Good point about the school shooting thing. I have no idea.

Are trench coats banned in FCS?

You seem to be having the same issue.

You didn't tell me exactly how much "hole" is too big and who you plan to charge with enforcing the hole measurements and locations. The college shirts can also get pretty raunchy, too.

Teachers are there to teach, not enforce a dress code. If you insist on pushing this, the system will likely go with a full uniform. Are you good with that?
