Cheney insisted on torture of prisoners

Dick Cheney is, without question, the most powerful American Vice President in history. His power within the Bush Administration is, for the most part, unchecked and his rule is absolute.

More than anyone else in the White House, Cheney has promoted the notion that the Administration is above the law and does not have to answer to the Constitution, Congress or the Supreme Court.

Nowhere is that abuse of power and law more evident than in Cheney's belief that torture is an accepted form of interrogation of prisoners and the terms of the Geneva Convention can, and should, be ignored in Bush's so-called "war on terror."

Geez, what was Cheney thinking? Everyone knows that we should bend over backwards to accomadate these misunderstood people. They should be afforded the same constitutional rights as every american. Maybe they could even start drawing a check from the government.

"Ahmad, we know that you know where Osama is, if you don't tell us we are going to take away your television."
Actually, I cannot believe that people on here doesn't REMEMBER when Cheney was 'preaching' the torture stuff... it was back around Katrina or a little afterwards..

Cheney couldn't understand why Americans were AGAINST it either, it was in the news a LOT during that time...

But what really WON the decision back then NOT to torture was the CIVILIZED Americans that said that if WE did that, then we would be NO BETTER than Saddam, and the premise of "AMERICANS" and our credibility would then be destroyed.

COMMON SENSE, and being CIVILIZED and ABOVE torturing people won in the end back a couple of years ago...

People need to NOW take stock of what has been going on these last 4 years, and the facts that we have a VP who RELISHES torture... and then think of what, as a Nation, we are capable of becoming...

After thorough thought, then people might just remember WHY the Constitution was written in the first place... because our fore fathers KNEW days like this would come, and they KNEW that protection and civilation was what America was all about.

Or else we can all just sit back, do NOTHING, say NOTHING, become acclimated to torture and killing, to the point that WE become blood thirsty...

I guess, to each his own... BUT that is NOT what this Country SHOULD even THINK of becoming...

Thank God that there are STILL some of us out here who cannot tolerate being an uncivilized Nation of heathens and blood thirsty people.
I dont think that Americans understand how bad things could get. They either refuse to believe it or they lock it away in the back of their mind somewhere. I'm sure we are a shining example of civilization to those who use 10 year old boys as suicide bombers and human shields. I can just see them turning from their wicked ways.

There is going to be a day, probably in the next few years, where we are going to turn on the news channel and the headline will be "Another car bomb kills 6 people in Huntsville today". This is preventable but it wont be prevented because of the American people's lack of courage and the spread of liberalism. We'll accept it slowly but surely.

Of course, all of this comes from someone who would support Public Hangings of child sex offenders. Smiler
USA1, I would give anything on God's Green Earth to disagree with your logic there.. but I cannot Frowner

We are not the same AMERICA we were just ten short years ago... and it is daily getting worse... suble changes, especially over the last 5 years have made people acclimated to the line of thinking that "nothing is gonna happen".. "We are invincible"...

We are nothing more than mere human beings who at one time had extremely HIGH bragging rights about being the most civilized Nation in the world, most diverse, and everyone wanted the American Dream...

Now, I am not sure what we are.. but it sure is getting scary!!!
The Bush Administration refuses to hold itself accountable for the protection of our national security, and Vice President Cheney is a key part of the problem. It was his office that leaked the identity of a CIA agent to the media. He's part of an Administration under investigation for using email accounts of the Republican National Committee to conduct official government business. According to the Washington Post:

Across the board, the vice president's office goes to unusual lengths to avoid transparency. Cheney declines to disclose the names or even the size of his staff, generally releases no public calendar and ordered the Secret Service to destroy his visitor logs.

The Vice President claims he's exempt from presidential executive orders because, as President of the Senate, he is "attached" to the legislative branch. But the Senate has even more stringent regulations on the handling of classified material -- even more rules that the Vice President hasn't followed. In typical fashion, the White House will only say that this is an "interesting constitutional question that people can debate."

Article II, Section 1 of the U.S. Constitution clearly states:

The executive power shall be vested in a President of the United States of America. He shall hold his office during the term of four years, and, together with the Vice President, chosen for the same term, be elected ...

It's time to remind the Vice President that he can't ignore our nation's laws.

Its Scary when The president and the vice president don't listen to the American People anymore and think they're above the law.Thats Scary!
To begin with these groups don't use "10 year old boys" as suicide bombers. But they have used a few 16 year old and a little older. In today's NY Times there is a story about how the Taliban was supposedly recruiting a 6 year old but I am not sure if they really were and if so it is an isolated case.

We allow military recruiters to begin propagandizing kids in high school and our culture is filled with glorifying violence. Now the show "24" glorifies torture. Children are indoctrinated at an early age.

I know when it comes to the Palestinians these kids are born and grow up under Israeli military occupation. They wake up every morning to helicopters flying over head, explosions or gun fire, Israeli troops on the streets, road blocks with abusive guards, harassment, house demolition's, drones and helicopters blowing up buildings and cars killing civilians and bystanders. They are awakened in the night by Israeli troops breaking into houses dragging people, sometimes family members or friends into the street, beating and taking them away to jail, many without charges and trials or military trials that don't meet international standards. There are shortages of food and water and restrictions on building while Israelis illegal settlements take more Palestinian land and expand. They have good modern roads for "Jews only" while Palestinian roads are neglected.

We are now spreading this occupation scenario to Iarq.

They see generations before them live in shame, humiliation and no future. No future for them or their younger family members. That's what makes them suicide bombers. They are not doing it for "Allah" and to kill infidels.

Even al Qaeda are trying to drive the West from the region. They are actually at war with every Arab government. They want to replace these governments with Islamic Republics but the majority of the Arab people are not for extreme Islam.

The problem is the American people have to educate themselves as to the real problems. They are being lied to by our government and corporate media.

I agree pba. The real problem facing America is the problem with our government, it's secrecy, it's declaring itself above the law and it's unaccountability to the people.
Didn't catch the news about the 6-year old the Taliban nearly talked into being a suicide bomber, did you? Or, the retarded kid the Palis used?

I'm against torture. Our best interrogator in Gitmo is a white headed older woman who serves tea to the younger detainees. They talk to her like momma.

But, I have no problem using good cop/bad cop interrogations, limited time in chill rooms
(several hours work wonders on wquatorial types), loud rock music, lights on in their cells 24/7 or the milder truth serums.

I don't consider waterboarding torture. It causes no physical damage and one can't drown -- its phychological only. Most break in 60 to 90 seconds. As part of their training, fighter pilots and special ops troops are water boarded to give them an idea of what its like.
I don't approve of using physical, abusive torture to gather information. Psychological is more effective and humane. Anything that can be done to protect our country should be done.

Since far leftists oppose torture so much, why don't we just let them watch their buddy Rosie O'Donnel rant for a while. I'd sing like a canary after 5 minutes of that.
Torture is inhumane and a crime against humanity. It is morally wrong and civilized societies do not use torture. Just look throughout history what governments used torture and who uses it today.

Sure, "suspects" break under torture. They will tell you anything you want to them to say or you want to hear. It's why the CIA and FBI have stated they oppose it. It's not effective or reliable. They prefer more sophisticated methods and find they get better results.

I won't use the good cop bad cop example cause all you have to do is look at all these people who were convicted continually being found innocent by DNA. Amazingly some even confessed under interrogation.
