Without commenting on her politics, have you seen her TV ad campaign for her race for Congress? I have been in 3 different conversations where someone in each commented that they look like a character in a sketch on Saturday Night Live they are so comical. I finally saw them and I have to agree. Is she for real? It is no secret that I am no fan of conservatives but this is absurd. I can't imagine how embarassing it would be to have her as a representative in D.C.

I've seen the commercials and I have to say, I'm impressed. I like the truth she speaks. I not only may vote for her, I may campaign for her. So, her looks are the what you have chosen to judge her on. I haven't heard anything else. I, for one, would be proud to have someone who's not afraid to criticize both parties, if it's the truth. That is what she has said in the commercials I've had the pleasure to see.
I'm glad you are basing you judgements on what matters.

No inexperienced, leftist, Obama with questionable associations for this wise family.
Well Gracie and your wise family, I am basing my opinion on what matters - the way she presents herself and her opinions. She appears out of touch, out of date and as white as white can be. There is no hint at diversity and she is asking to represent, as a representative, a very diverse area but she is in these ads trying to appeal to only a very narrow group of people. My comments are not about her hair style, her clothes, whether she is pretty or ugly it is about her representations in an effort to become a representative. All that is important and what she shows me in these ads is very, very scary.
bubba,
thanx for the compliment. so, let me figure this out, how could she appear as anything other that white, she IS white! What, by the way, is wrong w/ that? Maybe she should go into some predominantly black churches like hillary, obama, slick willie, and gore and speak with that fake, southern, slang, stereotypical preacher talk and say things like "I don't feel no ways tired". ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DGDm4jkDbGQ ) NOW THAT'S DIVERSITY.

You have said nothing about her opinions or HOW she is out of touch. You've only commented on her appearance. you said "the way she presents herself, she appears.

In case it hasn't crossed your mind, what matters is not how she presents herself. It is how she votes, her leadership abilities, her stating what she believes and sticking to it, for the right reasons and for the good of the country. She shouldn't BE ALL THINGS TO ALL PEOPLE. Diversity is NOT what made this country great. It was and will continue to be freedom, capitalism, and rugged individualism.

I recently heard her advertisements regarding our Founding Fathers and return US laws to those of the time when our country was created. If she wants to restore American government to the way it back then, will she be seeking to reinstate the practice of slavery and forbidding women the right to vote? No,she merely uses those buzz words of morals and liberal to try to get elected.
She isn't even that good at her role. It is sad that her handlers believe the people of the Fifth District to be that oblivious to her presentation.
Reacting to one sound bite from another candidate for another office does not suffice for a platform nor does it distinguish her in any way from a C-SPAN open phone lines caller who is hitting the scary talking point of the day.
It's time for a new script Cheryl! We're tired of the Rove show. It seems that the Jewish and Muslim voters are not to count in her so-called "Christian nation."
Maybe if she went on a Hawaiian vacation or skied over a shark her show would momentarily improve in its ratings . . .

Good point. It sounds like more crap from a crappy politician....

Promising things they can't deliver.

You forgot to mention that women wouldn't hold office either since they wouldn't be allowed to vote, which means her campaign is pointless.

Maybe she should have clarified her goals in a much more concise way than give blanket statements of comfort with conservative rhetoric of "morals" and "founding fathers"

Racist
What bothers me in her commercial is that she makes the assumption that everyone in Alabama is Christian. I am Christian, but I am not so full of myself and my religion as to completely ignore all of those who may claim a different faith. That is quite closed-minded and insensitive. I would think that would be a huge slap in the face to Muslims, Jews, and anyone else who doesn't believe as she does. My Christian beliefs are probably very different from hers... does that mean that I'm excluded too?
Christian or whatever else she is, we do not need this theocratic twit in Congress. She is obviously pandering to the crowd that would favor such impossibilities as return of school-administered prayer. The woman in all likelihood has NO idea whatsoever of the current status of church and state as regards the Constitution and the controlling judicial decisions on such matters.
I finally realized who it was she reminds me: Phyllis Schaffley of the Eagle Forum! A younger version, but old Phil looks pretty good for someone born in King George IV's reign, a walking modern miracle of plastic surgery.
It's time for a maudlin loop of wounded soldiers with "Do You Remember?" playing in the background, an endorsement by Concerned Women of America and the Pretension Leas Lily White Golf and Country Club. And lest we forget our own state's darling, Twinkle Andress Cavanaugh!
I love the way she takes an Obama news bite and uses it completely out of context to put herself in the limelight. Sad thing is, an ad this dumb will get some people to vote for her. She should have just said "blah blah, christian.. blah blah guns".. she'd have won by a landslide.
Why in the world would something minor like knowing a candidate's stand on issues be a hinder when she has invoked herself as a Christian gun loving Anti-Obama camp (or campy as one sees fit) follower?
Issues would only confuse voters -- she wants to be God's Anointed in Congress, she said so herself in not so many words.
Silly things like a platform for the Stepford Candidate is no problem, go to the last successful Republican run in Texas and/or Oklahoma then change Texas/Oklahoma to Alabama. Must simpler than having to actually research and write copy or pay to have it done.
My 90 year old grandmother who is a cousin of the late Senator/Rep. Claude Peppers would not be duped by her. Has the wrong letter in parentheses behind her name.
Cheryl Baswell Guthrie is the Conservative Change our Congress needs. Cheryl represents Our Values, will be Our Voice and will be Our Chance for Change.

Cheryl Baswell Guthrie will shake things up in Congress and change the way that government does business. Cheryl will bring strong Christian, moral and family values that she learned from growing up in north Alabama to Capitol Hill, as she works to restore honesty and integrity to government, and work with members of both parties to find new, conservative solutions to serious issues facing our country today.

Cheryl is a Republican and running on the same moral and family values B.S. that good Christians fell for when they voted for Bush. Well, if you have not learned anything about the republican party by now, you will never learn. Think about that vote when you go fill your tank.

I fear Gracie's "judgement" meter works something like this.

Meter gauges 0 to 5. 0 for dislike, 5 for a deep love and appreciation.

Step 1 - Mrs. Guthrie's commercial starts. Meter is affixed on 1.5, as being a bitter paranoid conservative with fear mongering tendencies, Gracie is predisposed to dislike most anyone.

Step 2 - Gauge moves to 2.0 when Gracie receives visualization confirming said candidate is white.

Step 3 - Gracie hears "blah blah blah, God." Meter jumps to 3.4

Step 4 - Gracie hears "Barack Obama" Meter dropps back to 2.8 Gracie then realizes it was Guthrie taking a comment out of context and using it to further her own agenda, meter goes back to 3.7

Step 5 - Grace smiles watching Mrs Guthrie hug her family in apparent photo ops that have nothing to do with her ability to run said office, then hears the word "guns." 5.0 on the meter and a vote sewn up.

Good Job, Guthrie.
I just saw her new TV ad and it is not quite as offensive or comical as the first. She does focus on the values of our founding fathers and call for a return to those values - as someone else pointed out earlier, I don't guess she means the part about owning slaves and refusing women the right to vote - or does she?
As some idiot earlier stated, it is not diversity that made this country great? Wow!
I love her "Men of Faith" montage with clips running past us slowly of Washington, Hamilton, Franklin and Jefferson. Too funny for words, one would hardly note them as being "conventially pious" in any sense that Cheryl B-G would recognize.
Washington and Hamilton did go to church in NYC when it was the capitol, but . . . "men of faith" is a bit strong for them, and totally N/A for Jefferson and Franklin!
Her handlers just need to read the source code for the last successful Republican campaign in Texas or Oklahoma and substitute Alabama for the other states when it comes up and then post that for her blank "Issues" page.
Do most people consider attorneys "small businessmen"? I always thought that those who practice a profession were not considered "businessmen." There is a world of difference between "clients/patients/students/parishoners" and "customers," is there not?

That's just more of that Evangelical Christian arrogance - the assumption that people revered in history for anything at all must surely be like them - faithful, "Christian," church-going, non-slave owning, with an equal treatment of women and minorities?

And Joe is right, she is terribly annoying!
