This is very disturbing and it will continue to get worse if states start protecting teachers like the recent ruling in the state of Washington. For those of you who haven't heard, the state court determined that a teacher was not in the wrong if the student was at least 18 years old. So, basically if you are of age, a student-teacher sexual relationship is acceptable. This is just another example of this country's moral fibers continuing to fall apart.

According to the laws in most states when a female reaches the age of 18 she becomes a woman and can make her own decissions on everything including relationships so, although it's not illeagel for a 18 year old student to have a relationship and cannot be dealt with in court the school system should step up and hold the teacher accountable because they are setting themselves up for a sexual harassment suit later on.

As far as teachers having impropper relationships with underage students, my daughter was a seventh grader at Central last year when the Brewer story broke, when I ask her about it she knew right away who the student was and wasn't surprised at all. Your kids know whats going on, they just don't talk about it to you. I question my daughter regularly about things at school and I maybe get about 10% of what's actually happening and to me that's scarry. But looking back, I was probably the same way with my parents.
This was going on while I was in school. We also had a teacher's aide who "dated" students. My school was also home to the infamous city council member who "liked" their students A LOT. Two of my schools teachers were husband and wife. The wife started "dating" the other teacher down the hall.
Your kids do know all about this. It is common knowledge at school. At least it was while I was in school.

You are SO right! Kids know when stuff isn't right & pick up on signals!!
Last year, my then 13 year old daughter, was complaining about one her teachers must be going through menopause or something, that she was real touchy & ill, all the time.
Come to find out, she had just found out her husband was being deployed for the 3rd time (a stop loss order) back to Iraq. Kids can catch on to things we adults might not be so quick to get!

I'm sorry Mrs. Merry but some of the worst abuse I witnessed came from leaders in churches. I saw it twice. God doesn't force leaders of a church or school to be anything. Those are they type who abuse their position of power.

You might be surprised how many good Christian people there are in other countries. We can't be the judge. Only God can do that. We do have to beware of false prophets and we have plenty of them in America. As the Bible say's, and I quote, "Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven". Matt. VII, verse 21.

I knew a coach at Coffee that "dated" his students, but it was consensual. Sick ppl.

LMAO! I know the same Coach you do!
I went to Coffee as well.

It was my cousin that went to Coffee in the late '70s. I went to Brooks.

I'm not sure whatever happened to this guy, but it was a pretty well known "secret." There was another one from Hibbett that moved to TN, I think it was. There's a topic on him here somewhere.
It is not my intention to defend the unacceptable conduct of the few, BUT the title of this thread "Child Molester Teachers" really caught my eye because it makes it sound like this is a pervasive epidemic and that NO teacher is worthy of trust. This is simply not true. I am sure figures (demographics) are available that will tell you precisely how pervasive this problem is, BUT I would venture to guess that it is less than one percent of the teaching profession.

I agree that your children know what is going on in their school environment and it is advisable to keep an open dialogue, as a parent, to protect your child, but this should not turn into the Salem Witch hunt.
I believe all teachers in Alabama, and probably the other 49 ststes) have to go through background checks that would preclude the hiring of individuals with known propensities toward sexual deviation, drug abuse, theft and other felonies. They could be screened against other data bases, depending on school system requirements.

Schools just keep hiring these pervs. Meanwhile some of us have had to leave the area for teaching positions.

I'd say that the school officials are getting what they deserve, but it's the students who get groped who have to pay for it.

The school officials are getting what they deserve?...... How are they to know if a teacher has never been caught and dont have a record...... Or if it their first offense?..... No one to blame but the predator themselves!...

No one knows what a child molester looks like just by a job interview.......

The kids do pay and that is the sad part..... if it was my kid.... the PAYment would be very high!..... Mad

I don't know the number either, but one it too many, at Clements or Speake or anywhere else. Anyone who sees a child as something sexual is sick, but we seem to be heading in that direction.

you are so right Fox, these are sick people and should never be allowed around children again. IMO these people can not be fixed from their desires, which will always endanger our children. Which is sad, you don't know who you can trust with you child these days. Frowner

Right now Alabama has one of the lowest screening protocols. I am hoping this will change in the next few years.
