My sister and I took off our shoes the last day of the school year and rarely put them on again until school started again in the fall. Not because we didn't have shoes, or because we were poor - we just didn't like shoes!
I remember . . .
. . . walking thru the clover and waiting to see which one of us got the first honeybee sting
. . . wading in creeks, chasing crawfish
. . . deliberating losing the flip-flops Mama bought every year, knowing we would 'lose' them!
. . . how mud felt squishing between your toes
. . . picking blackberries and eating them fresh off the vine
. . . taking some home for Mama to wash and serve up in milk and sugar (fresh off the vine was better!)
. . . cranking the old ice cream maker (no electric gizmos back then!)

*sigh*
