Serious question baron-just what cheap walmart crap? I don't do a lot of shopping at walmart, that's true, but it's because I like other stores better for a lot of different reasons, and thinking I'm "too good" to be seen at walmart isn't one of those reasons. You can find the same things walmart sells in every other store, and as for cheap crap, those dollar stores and buck only stores, and most "flea markets", would be out of business without it. I don't know what the answer is, but you have to wonder why this country doesn't have little "plants" all over turning out the same cheap crap.

Best

When i say we I mean US retailers who have a penchant for cheaply produced goods in countries such as China. Wal mart is simply the best known of these retailers. To be sure I'm guilty as anyone else for buying these types of products and hastening the decline of American based consumer manufacturing.

This is a serious problem. China simply has no respect for intellectual property rights and does not wish to trade on an even playing field. I hope the Obama administration has a strategy to combat this malicious activity but I won't hold my breath.

You can pretty well figure "we've had it" if all we have to depend on is obama and his handlers.

I think corporations have to be responsible for sa***uarding their own secrets from state or non-state hackers, because the government simply doesn't have the resources to protect everything online. But when it comes to critical infrastructure and government secrets, I think we do need to start putting more diplomatic and international pressure on China over this issue, because this report makes it even more plainly ridiculous for the Chinese government to continue insist that they're not involved (it's not like anyone ever believed them anyway).

And the rest of the world is definitely on our side on this one. In fact, I'm pretty sure we could arrange to cut China off from the Internet almost completely if their cyber-attacks cross the line from espionage to actual attacks, like shutting down our power grids or something. Such a plan would be highly classified, but I bet one exists. All of the major fiber-optic cables leave China at three points around Guangzhou/Hong Kong, Shanghai, and Tianjin (there's almost nothing between China and Russia), because built-in choke points are what enable the Chinese government to control and censor Internet traffic into China. The flip side is if we cut those cables, either with submarines or through arrangements with our allies that those cables pass through (like South Korea and Japan), cyber attacks originating in China could be shut down fairly quickly. Hopefully cooler heads would prevail after that though, because we'd be pretty close to a shooting war at that point.

The main problem, though, is just everyday cyber-espionage originating in China, and even though everyone knows they're doing it, so far no one has figured out any leverage they could use to get them to stop. Appealing to international laws and norms certainly has no effect, because China only cares about China.

Edit: Hey, look at that. We can say "reputation" now.
