Trader, that's a good idea too. Maybe you can start another topical discussion for that so people can pinpoint the specific type of activity on which they'd like to focus.

I'm specifically seeking ideas for CHURCH youth.

No, that doesn't mean they have to be tied to a church event (Homesick's idea is a good example), but I'd like to insure they would not be contrary to things in which our church youth should participate. For example: while some might consider a "Harry Potter" movie a "family event" - it doesn't line up with what a church youth leader should place into the lives of his or her students. So I would suggest that while all posts to this forum discussion would be valuable also as "family events" ... all "family events" might not be valuable as Church Youth Group events.

Homesick, can you offer some details on the Braly event?

Couldn't help but notice everyone's interest in the Braly caroling event. Here's what I have that was submitted to the TimesDaily.com calendar:

Caroling to Break the Guinness World Record!
Please come to Braly Stadium December 17th at 2 p.m. to attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the largest group of people singing Christmas Carols at the same time for the longest time! We NEED 8000 people! Come make history with us!

Thanks, AM. I also know they attempted this in New York (Central Park I think?) and failed. How cool would it be if our little town succeeded where the Big Apple couldn't. And what a neat memory for kids...story to tell their grandkids one day.
It WOULD be wonderful to know our town succeeded in this over the "big guys." And it'd be fun to be part of such a happening.

Whew! 8,000?! My little youth group won't put much of a dent in that. But at least we can try... right? I'd hate to know they ended up with 7,999. ;-)~

How many will Braly stadium hold?

Thanks for the info, Southern. (I'm excited to see this is your first "post" too!) Are the "rock bands" Christian based? I would assume so by other churches attending... but want to be sure. My youth are mostly from Athens, so that's a long drive if not.
Okay folks, from the press release from 91.3 The Fix on the caroling event:

The current record is just over 7,514 set in 2004 in South Carolina. We have almost 15,000 seats in Braly stadium.

As part of the events that day musical celebrities will entertain us with a free Christmas concert beginning at 1:30 p.m. for those who wish to come a little bit early. Performing will be Lenny LeBlanc, Gary Baker, The Shoals Praise & Worship Choir, Mark Narmore and others. The concert will continue until about 2:30 p.m. when the world record attempt will begin.

Even though the attempt does not begin until 2:30 p.m. it is very important that everyone enters the stadium no later than 2:00 p.m. According to Mark Allen, Guinness Co-coordinator, "every person entering will need to be accounted for by signing their name on sign in sheets" to document with Guinness the accurate number of individuals who are there. We will sing 12 different carols for a a total of 20 minutes to break the record. Everyone should be on their way out of the stadium by 3 pm.

Everyone is asked to wear Christmas carols for an aerial photo, and if at all possible, donate a canned food item that will be distributed to needy families by the Salvation Army and other local help organizations this Christmas.

All 8 entrances to Braly stadium will be open and parking will be the same as any UNA game. Gates will open at 1 p.m. for this rain or shine event.

For more details, visit Shoals Christmas Guinness World Record
There will be 11 songs to sing. All of them are your holiday favorites and just the 1st 2 verses. The words will be available at the stadium.THERE WILL BE A SIGN-IN SHEET AT ALL ENTRIES,SO,PLEASE MAKE SURE YOUR SIGNATURE IS ON ONE OF THEM!!!!The songs should take about 20minutes,or this is the goal, anyway.Everyone might have to stretch out some of the notes, haha
You are encouraged to bring your cameras or a way to take videos.I plan to do so,for my now, 10 month old Grandaughter,to have in the future to share with her children.PLEASE DON'T MISS THIS HISTORY MAKING EVENT.IT WILL BE SEEN AROUND THE WORLD.THIS WILL TAKE PLACE REGUARDLESS OF RAIN,SNOW OR SHINE.WE WILL HAVE ONLY THE ONE CHANCE TO GO DOWN IN HISTORY.
EVERYONE,PLEASE,MARK YOUR CALENDARS TO BE THERE!!!!HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO ALL!!!!!

So, do you dictate what your youth should believe?! Are you telling them what they should or shouldn't watch/listen to?! Where do you pastor? I need to make sure we don't attend. Whatever happened to churches teaching Bible and letting parents filter children?!
O.W.P. a youth leader in a church, is responcible for the spiritual growth of those youngster intrusted to their care. Believe it or not, some people don't want their child to watch a movie about witchcraft. If they do they can do it at home, I know it's all fiction but we don't know the age group here. I would expect,if I still had a young child, that any church sponcered activity to be within the relm of spiritual growth, fellowship and Bible teachings. A Harry Potter movie just doesn't fit in this catagory IMHO.

I can handle that. I thought he was making reference to the whole "Harry Potter is Satanic" junk.
