Just saw this posted on this bands MySpace page. Is this true? "Urban Crowd?" I've seen this band, they are a great band.

The grown folks band show at big ed's tonite has been cancelled due to the florence city council not wanting an "urban crowd" at our show.... It's 2009, people.

If true I tend to agree with one of the responses under the heading.

They better have a better reason than that! That smacks of discrimination and racism. It better be a license issue, or that could get ugly.
If con is the opposite of pro, is Congress the opposite of progress?

WOW.... I HAVE BEEN TO A FEW SHOWS DOWN THERE AND OUTSIDE OF POOR MANAGEMENT ITS A COOL PLACE. I KNOW WHAT KIND OF CROWD FOLLOWS CERTAIN TYPES OF MUSIC. IF YOU DONT WANT THE CROWD THAT THE MUSIC BRINGS ....DONT BOOK THEM.YOU SURE DONT WAIT TILL THE DAY OF THE SHOW AND COME UP WITH SOME SORRY EXCUSE LIKE THIS. ITS WRONG ,AND IF THATS WHAT THE CITY COUNCIL SAID THEY ARE LIABLE AND SHOULD BE PUNISHED. THE BAND IS ENTITLED TO WHAT THEY WOULD HAVE MADE AS WELL AS THE OWNERS. AND SINCE WHEN DOES THE CITY COUNCIL TELL A CLUB WHAT KIND OF MUSIC OR CROWD THEY CAN HAVE. ISNT THIS THE USA???THE CITY COUNCIL HAS BEEN USING EAST FLORENCE AS AN EXCUSE TO BRING MONEY TO THE CITY FOR AN ENTERTAINMENT DISTRICT WHEN EVERYBODY KNOWS THAT THEY DONT WANT THAT TO HAPPEN IN FLORENCE. ITS A BIG SCAM .....THERE WILL NEVER BE ANYTHING OF THE SORT,JUST THE SAME OLD MUSIC FESTIVAL ONCE A YEAR. THIS IS JUST CRAZY!!!!
As for wanting to hear the band in that setting, no thanks. Call me when Cheap Trick or Lyle Lovett come to town. As for thinking this is illegal, hmmm.

Did they need a special permit? How did the Florence City Council get involved in this? I found the band's site easily, but didn't see anything on the incident. Doesn't Bid Ed's have bands all the time? Is there ever a fire code issue?
Before you go bashing Florence officials, you may want to consider this. Several years, both the owner and local officials ignored obvious violations of fire and life safety codes, at a club known as "The Station". The mind set eventually led to the deaths of over 100 people in a very sudden and tragic fire.

Sure the timing of Florence officials may have been bad, just as it was with the attempt to open the “Haunted House” in the former eyeglass location at Mall Road and Cox Creek Parkway last year.

Some of these same issues apply to "Big Ed's" building. There were reported to both the owner of the establishment and city officials last year; they have not been corrected and I would not risk the life of myself, my family or friends by visiting that establishment for any event that involved a large group.

As part of my job, I often consult and advise private businesses, government entities, and individuals on issues such as this, and from the issues obvious issues that I saw when I was there, the local inspectors who approved this place to open are seriously lacking in knowledge of their jobs.

This coming week, there is a meeting with various city officials, business owners, over some of these same issues. I expect some to be put on notice to comply or close. I hope that Ed is on that list of people invited to attend.

that's crap!! GFB doesn't use pyrotechnics and I'm sure you, your family, and half the folks you know probably wouldn't attend the show anyhoo. So come on with that lame mess!! we in west florence have seen this type of stuff over and over when someone wants to open a place for the "urban crowd"
well what I would like to know is what the city officials consider the "urban crowd"

heck I am nearly 60 yr old professional female and I LIKE their music!
Nope this boils down to the certain group who run this town and have everything dictated to them by a certain religous preference who absolutley are NOT going to allow entertainment . I am truly surprized they have not put a stop to the Handy Festival.
Bossplayr1966, the issues that I saw with this particular location has nothing to do with GFB and the use of pyrotechnics or not, but more for folks like yourself and others to be able to go to a venue and have a good time, safely.

Sure the fire at the Station was caused by the use of pyrotechnics in close proximity to an extremely flammable material, but the massive loss of life was directly association with alterations to the building made by the owner/tenant, and the failure of the owner/tenant of the building and local officials to make the corrections.

I have read the review of what went wrong in that incident. One of the biggest issues reported was the failure of the patrons to recognize some of the other emergency exits, because the signs were not luminous per their adopted code. One exit was concealed from patrons and not used. The majority of the deaths took place within close proximity to the front door, as with most attending this venue, only know of one way out and that being the way they entered, and that being the front door.

Because of the reduction in width of the path of egress, you had a mass herd of folks being funneled into a narrow passageway in a panic state of mind, with limited means of escape. Some of the fatalities died of being crushed to death, and not from the effects of the fire.

I have no idea of who or what GFB nor do I care. I can also say the same of other performers/entertainers of whom I have worked with at both large and small venues all over the state and region. Some use special effects including pyrotechnics and live fire, while others do not.

So before you start making accusations of my comments, being a lame mess, you may want to reconsider the whole picture, and not be a victim of tunnel vision.
