We were having a conversation about smoking at ECM this week, went to check on it today and this was now in the place of the discussion:

Dear Readers,

In order to provide more commenting features and improved integration with social media, we will begin using facebook as our tool for commenting on stories effective Saturday, Nov 19th.

This new tool will allow for story comments much as you see them now, but will also allow you to post your comments onto your personal facebook page, inviting others to join in your conversation.

If you have any comments or concerns, please go to the following form and let us know.

Why would you turn on the ability to comment on stories on your website again, only to then turn it off and make us all go through facebook?  'Story comments much as you see them now?'  So much or posting anonymously.  Is this place next?

Beam me up, Scotty, there's no intelligent life here......

In general, people who use facebook just want to make a statement that really has nothing to do with the subject.  They just want to out do someone else and have their name, picture and a one line sentence that really contributes nothing to the discussion.  I don't use facebook because there are a ton of postings that have no relation ship to the subject.  I don't agree with a lot of postings on this site, but I do think the people posting have a true interest in the subject.  I for one will not post if facebook takes over.

I use Facebook, but mostly just to stay in touch with all my friends.

What's the point of posting about an article in the Times Daily on Facebook? That's why we have forums, so we can remain anonymous if we want to.   Most of the forum topics (except the religion & politics) are about articles in the paper.

Bad call Times Daily!

Hate this idea...don't want comments I make anonymously about any number of topics thrown all over my facebook page, thank you.  I rarely share a news article on facebook.  I also don't attempt to discuss religion or politics with people I need to still like I the end of the day...LOL...since I may work with them or see them across the table at Thanksgiving.  I don't use facebook that way.  I understand it may broaden their reach (IF people keep commenting - they may not), but I hate it just the same.

Hi all,

For years I avoided Facebook -- much like I avoided Forums for many years.  Yet, last year I went on Facebook and have had wonderful results.   For one thing, you choose who will be your Friends -- so, only their posts will show on your News Page (or main page).  Even then, if someone you have selected as a Friend begins to abuse the page, like some do (posting 15-20 posts in a row and cluttering your News Page) -- you can choose to delete those or to not receive posts from that person again.

On the other side of the coin -- I have been thrilled at being able to reconnect with Friends I have totally lost track of and have not seen in decades.  I have reconnected with my step-children from my first marriage (1956).  I have reconnected with my high school girl friend (Molly).  I have reconnected with my girl friend of 1963 (Isabel).   No, my wife is not jealous; she knows it is only for friendship.

In the last few months, I have reconnected with Friends whose family I last saw on July 4, 1963 -- and am thrilled to learn that my main contact in the family is a Christian believer.

And, yesterday I received a telephone call from a close Friend and co-worker last seen in 1993 at his wedding.  We totally lost track of one another.  His wife passed away in 2008 and he told me yesterday, "I had no idea how to contact you; but, I see you every week when I watch my wedding video.  You are dancing with Barb (his wife) at our wedding."

I found him on Facebook, sent him a private message -- and he called from Florida.   We talked for an hour getting up to speed with one another.

While Facebook can be a somewhat destructive "time sink" -- it also is an amazingly great tool for reconnecting.  I can hardly wait to see who I will find, or who will find me, in the future.  Just my thoughts.

By the way, if any of you are on Facebook, look me up.  Like on the Religion Forum, I am on Facebook as Bill Gray -- easy to find.  And, Ian Sanford has a great "I Love Sheffield" page on Facebook.

God bless, have a wonderful, blessed day,

Bill

Facebook is great, Im on it nearly every day.  However, as someone else said, I can be honest here where I have to watch what I say on facebook because I am friends with co-workers, customers, etc etc.  Not near as bad as linkedin, but there are some subjects you just dont run into a room full of people you know and blurt out.

Here on the forum, I can be completely honest about what I think.  There are a few people that know who I am, but I have the ability to control who I share my personal info with.  You dont have that ability when you start linking facebook to all your posts.

There are very few people here on the forums that are as open about their real identity as Bill.  There is a reason for that.  Sure, it helps protect the trouble makers, but those folks will just create fake facebook accounts to cause trouble.  This move will just drive more people away from posting on the webpage.  And if they change the forums to match, it will just be another nail in its coffin......

Signs of the times, Captain.

"Facebook link a must to comment"

"Good riddance to anonymous commenters"

Go to: http://www.postandcourier.com/news/local/ and click on any article. A column on the right of the selected article will then appear entitled "Most Popular - Most Commented." Click on the above topics.

Note the number of comments stated at the top of the below articles compared to those actually posted after others were culled/deleted. The remaining comments are nonetheless interesting.
