Was Waterloo once called "Havanna"? Notice there was no Colbert county back in the early 1820's.

Muscle Shoals seems to have started just east of Florence and by the time one got to Sheffield the worst was over.

Doesn't say Havanna ,says Havauna, looks east of Waterloo....No Seven Mile Island showing...I thought Frankfurt was the county seat back then(Franklin)
A little off subject, but I'd love to come across some old pictures of the Shoals. I'm such a nostalgia nut and have a fascination, in particular, with architecture from the 1950's and 1960's - the style and design of homes and businesses built during that time period. Does anyone know where to find such pictures and stories? I've found several books with stories and pictures of Birmingham from that era, but would love to see some of "home".
Have you checked with the local libraries to see what kind of images they have? I know Lauderdale County Library had undertaken the HUGE task of trying to catalog and preserve tons of old pictures and documents. They may have some things you can check out.

Each city may also have a historian, although I think Florence is looking for one right now so they may not have anyone in the position for the time being.

Sheffield library has alot of pics. We bought copies of a bunch of them, had them framed and my son placed them in the hall of his Village Home. They have some of when the village was being built early 1900's. Some of the employees @ Old Walgreens, parades downtown, Belks, etc. Cool

Could it be a misspelling of "Savannah"? The road to Waterloo is located off Savannah highway.... just a suggestion.

Nome, Alaska was named that because of a misunderstanding with the spelling.... seems the map had the word "Nome" with a question mark after it... cartographers assumed that was the town's name... but actually the person who wrote it had bad handwriting... it was the word "name" with the question mark because they didn't know the name of the village....

If you're ever back in the area, visit "Legends" Restaurant downtown across from the post office. They have some very old photos of downtown and Wilson Dam that are enlarged on the walls.
