That Obama understands that matters of state are just that, and not matters of religion?

This is how our country was organized and flourished for 200 years. Only recently has religion been so important in American politics, and it has proven detrimental.

I didn't vote for Obama, but this is refreshing. We'll see how he works out.

...and why didn't you vote for him?

Skep and Nash,
Perhaps Nash is trying to say his is a Christian by his own interpretation of Jesus' teachings. We all know different denominations interpret the Bible in various ways. Is this so, Nash?

That's exactly right. I'm not a member of any denomination and I don't follow any preacher. I read on my own, listen to others' opinions, and make up my own mind. I couldn't care less if it goes along with other denominations doctrine or not.

Yes, one of my very favorite movies. That's what you get when a bunch of Oxford educated intellectual cut ups get together. Blessed are the cheesemakers.

Deep Fat, this is a wonderful quote by the man who posed for your avatar: "Think how great a proportion of Mankind," he warned in 1757, "consists of weak and ignorant Men and Women, and of inexperienc'd Youth of both Sexes, who have need of the Motives of Religion to restrain them from Vice, to support their Virtue, and retain them in the Practice of it till it becomes habitual, which is the great Point for its Security." Ben Franklin
quote:
And perhaps that was Jesus had in mind. I think, however where some are concerned, (present company excluded Nash and Skep) he overestimated the mental capacity and intrinsic compassion of the human race.

I don't think He overestimated people. He always gave people a choice. The apostles made a choice to follow him, others made a choice to invite Him in their homes, and in some cases they made a choice not to follow Him. He never forced anyone to do anything against their will, that's a concept developed by us. He wanted us to make up our own mind.

In the same way, people make a choice not to learn on their own. They make a choice to allow someone to tell them what to think and believe and a choice to follow a preacher and not Him. It's easier to have some preacher tell them what the Bible says rather than read it themselves. He knew that would happen and warned against it.
