I hope that after this primary run off, in November everyone will look at the good job William Smith has done and how much involvement he has had in his district and in the whole county. No disrespect to either of the two democratic candidates, but we need someone like Smith in there that will stand up for what is right.
"The trouble with Smith is: He's a member of the wrong Political Party"

I believe I understand what you are saying here. I just wish people would look at WHO these candidates are and not just what Political Party they represent. I was raised in a "democratic home" if you will, but I see things now as the need for having the right person in there, not just whoever is representing a certain party. I wish we as a whole would pay more attention to who we are putting into office and not just what party they represent. It could make the difference in having a good commission/council/board and having a bad one.

OK.... So if you saying that party affiliation in this local race is of vital importance, then I guess that it will be OK to tie these candidates in with their party's Presidential nominee. I wonder if Fulmer or Clemons will be ready to endorse Obama. My guess is that will not go over very well in this county. Remember it is all about party affiliation. BTW, it looks like Smith is doing a pretty good job. At least he willing to listen.
Smith has ran for several offices and is always defeated. He was appointed to finish this term by the govonor, he was not elected to the current position. Smith lost favor with a lot of people when he ramrodded the changing of the name of the Florence Post Office to the Mckinley federal building because he is a distant relative of McKinnley, who is not known and really did not accomplish anything important in his life. Smith wants to be big in politics in Alabama at any cost and the voters keep rejecting him.
I've known Smith for many years and have worked with him outside of his chosen profession on many community activities. He is a man who represents the area well. I agree with the comment that the local people have to get past the party affiliation if Lauderdale County is going to flourish. As long as you are hung up on a party and not what the candidate can accomplish for the good of the people, then we can never move forward. Politics have changed, in case you haven't noticed. It's about electing the person, not the party. There is not a black and white line anymore that delineates one party from the other...(as much as some people would try and have you believe!). These days, when "running" for office, people (in many cases, not all) pick the party under which they can get elected the easiest; i.e. the party for which historically has carried the vote. (In the case of Lauderdale County, most people run under the Democratic ticket.) Regardless of the party affiliation you prefer, Smith is the person most qualified.
